Let's go!
Hokies!!
Go Hokies! I have questions. Is this kid a tight end or WR? How many tight-end types is too many? Regardless, always happy to see a kid commit to VT. Lets Go...
If Corny had the balls and coaching acumen to call a pass on a key 3rd and 8 as opposed to plowing the QB into the line and punting, a TE would be great in that situation, and you can never have enough weapons like that. But if the game is in the balance, we won't throw it in that situation
Not that I disagree, but I also recall numerous games that were lost because the only play we ran in those situations was a fade to Cam Phillips. I remember Fuente basically admitting that those 50-50 balls were apparently the highest percentage plays available to that offense when the game hung in the balance. It was painful to watch.
For someone that is supposed to be an offensive guru, he doesn't have a lot of faith in his offense. If the Oline wasn't blocking so well the last few years, im not sure how we would move the ball.
We throw it- when the game is not in the balance. When it is...we play the "outnumber" them game and call a QB read option that is kept 90% of the time. then we punt. I have seen this time and time again. I would love to see a competent passing protection tree on 3rd and 9 in the 4th Q tied against UNC. Don't hold your breath
I'll just be happy if we're even tied with UNC in the 4th Q
Can we not drag down a commitment thread with this shit?
247 has him as a receiver but he tagged Shibest so I'm assuming he's going to play Tight End. Not sure I get taking three this class, but I feel like both Wright and Hoffman are big, quick tight ends who can line up anywhere. Considering after this year we're almost certain to lose James Mitchell - that would only leave us with Gallo, Deiuliis, Pene, and Gibble... I can see taking three. Either way, I'm all on more guys who want to be Hokies!
In VT"s offense, you have two starters- your mobile fullback hybrid (Gallo) and your mobile, long, hand on the ground tight end (Mitchell.) There are more spots for Y and Z TEs than in most programs.
VPI&SU....I like this kid.
maybe this will be the new 800%
Wish I knew his battery percentage...
At this pace 50% of the roster is going to be TEs and RBs.
Someone get Paul Johnson on as a consultant so we can run a wing t package!
Fuente can't stop it!
How I feel getting a commitment from a guy who's now going to show up on everyone's radar
Welcome to the Hokies, Big Shoots!
I'm always happy for a kid when they decide to make the smartest decision of their life, Go Hokies! Doubtless there will be some questions about roster management. A 3rd TE when we only have 1 DB commit and no true WR, in a class that is supposedly going to be smaller then normal certainly raises some eyebrows.
My question though is, how much of a look do the players get at different positions during practice. Obviously you're not going to see if your center can run routes from the slot, but do we see if an OL can play DT or if the WR should be a DB? I would have liked to have seen 370lb TJ Jackson give it a try at DT before he decided to transfer.
Especially when Keli Lawson is now being talked about playing a "Bucky Hodges" role on offense instead of backer.
We need baller skill players at TE and WR getting all these guys is definitely a plus. And if we get too many they just transfer. No harm no foul we keep the best ones. This is infinitely better than the opposite problem of not having enough good players commit. (we've also always been able to get multiple TE's out on the field at a time, not really worried about guys not playing there).
Also interesting to me that there's never any complaints about the most overloaded position on this roster: DB. I for one love that we have that kind of crazy depth but thats definitely the most overloaded position group
Yeah, but we generally have 5 dbs on the field for every defensive play. That and OL are the 2 positions you have to overload
I'm not certain this class will actually be all that small
It's unclear to me what the numbers will be, but the general thought is that most teams will have to take a smaller class because of the 85 scholarship limit exemption from COVID going away after this upcoming football season. Then you factor in teams holding a couple extra scholarships open for transfers, even moreso now with immediate eligibility guaranteed, and it's a safe bet that most teams will have a smaller class at least in relative terms.
GT Offer? Megatron 2.0?
He cared enough to use an official name for VT, and I welcome that type of player with open arms.
Rated Athlete of the Year, here:
In addition to GiT, Daequan also had these G5 offers:
I mean, just because he's gotten more G5 offers than P5 doesn't mean he doesn't have the potential to be a dynamic TE.
Just looking at PFFs top 20 TEs for the upcoming year
Travis Kelce went to Cincinnati
Darren Waller also went to Georgia Tech
Goedert and Tonyan were FCS
Jonnu Smith went to FIU
Tyler Higbee went to WKU,
Logan Thomas went somewhere in Southwest Virginia.
A full 3rd of the top 20 were either FCS, G5, or played at the P5 schools Wright had offers to.
Going through the rest of the top 32:
There's one more Hilltopper
Two Harvard Crimson
Two more G5ers
One FCSer
And one who went to a school that doesn't have a football team.
That's 15 of 32.
TE is a pretty difficult position to project in my opinion. Unless they are a super freak like Pitts or OJ Howard, it's usually a position where you have a lot of similar body type and athletic profiles where very subtle differences in technique, hand strength, and positional awareness are the difference between elite and average tight ends.
I'm guessing Wright will be rated a 3 star when said and done.
TIL that Darren Waller went to GT. I guess I didn't think about it much because TEs and GT didn't compute for the longest time.
Granted, he played WR there, but playing for CPJ meant that he definitely learned how to block.
"playing for CPJ meant that he definitely learned how to CHOP block"
How quickly everyone forgets.
I still have nightmares of him and Deandre Smelter from 2014. Felt like anytime they needed a big play they lobbed it up to one of the two. Thought Smelter was going to be a stud as a pro until he tore his ACL
Obviously, schedules are different between G5 and P5 but all those schools, save for Georgia State and Charlotte, have at least as many 10 win seasons as we do since 2016. A lot of those schools have had seasons end in the AP Top 25. He also had an offer from Georgia Tech (basically, the team we beat out) who has been recruiting pretty well since transitioning from a triple-option offense.
We're always going to see what we want to see, but what sticks out to me is that his footwork seems great in his hudl video. He knows how to find space against a zone, he knows when to sit on a route and when to break, he's a big body with hands. I think someone posted how he won awards from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which seems pretty big to me. Whether he lines up inside or outside, I think he could be a big time target with time.
All wright all wright all wright
For anyone wondering, Wright's scores got updated. 0.8516 composite but he's an 87 overall by 247, which would make him the fourth highest ranked player for us on 247's system.
Great job by the staff to find this kid and lock him down quickly, and great job getting three kids out of Georgia.
