Kicker?

Taft Coghill Jr. @tcoghilljr 2h
North Stafford coach Joe Mangano says he's 90-95 percent sure kicker Joey Slye will head to Virginia Tech: "It's pretty much a done deal."

This was on twitter, not much other info I have seen regarding, I tried to check 247 and rivals for player info and could not find anything. Anyone have any other info of this kid?

Kicking from the 40, but yes. Even giving up 5 yards to get to the 35 for college kickoffs, he's got a helluva leg.

101 tackles as a SR in HS and Foster was reportedly "blown away" with him according to Twitter.

We got a punter who will strip the ball, and a kicker who is built like a linebacker, and will willingly hit you like one.

This is everything I could have ever possibly dreamed of...

We have needs at linebacker. Will he be a linebacker that kicks? Could be interesting

First thought when I read about him was Cody Grimm. Grimm is 5'11" 200-210 lbs after lots of years of serious weight training. Slye is 5'11" 195 coming outta HS. If he has a motor and eye for the ball like Grimm (possible with Bud Foster being "blown away" with his defense), it'll be hard to keep him off of punt coverage teams and outta the depth chart on defense. That'd be best-case scenario though.

At the very least we get a kicker who wants to hit somebody.

True, but our major need is at the interior linebacker spots. He's way too tiny for either of those spots, but ya never know. If he packs on 40 pounds of solid muscle in the next couple years, then yes, we'll have the single most intimidating kicker in football and maybe some added depth at Mike.

As far as I can tell, he kicks off the ground, which is a major plus.

The only thing that concerns me is that his kicks don't have a ton of height. If they're deep enough in the end zone (most seem like they'd be around 5 yards deep for a college kickoff), it might be enough to dissuade returners from bringing it out. Still, if he doesn't catch one solidly and the returner catches it a yard or so deep, the coverage team could be in a bit of trouble.

Not sure who this Taft guy is, but here is more:

Good. Let's revolutionize another position.

A line backing kicker. What epitomizes Virginia Tech more?

A line backing kicker with 1,200 yards rushing his senior year.

I completely forgot about his Marshall run.

I stand completely corrected. Kudos.

I am not 100% sure of this information, but a friend of AJ's told me he had D-1 offers to pole vault. Don't think there is rivals information on that sport - but - if true shows the athlete AJ is.

We thought having a starting WR punt was the most Frank Beamer thing possible. Turns out that having a LB punt might be the most Beamer thing ever.

Hell, Kellan Moore would punt for Boise State, when Petersen didn't go for it

Sugar Bowl fake punt anyone?

Been there done that.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Which means he will be attempting his first game time FG action in the bowl game. Which would be the 3rd straight year we do that.

we might use this kid at LB since our depth there is so thin. He could be LB and kicker...

Holy shit. Find another season where we have more depth.

QB
RB
Kicker
Possibly defensive line.
And the studs at Db.

...find another season where we have little or no depth at:
LB
DT

Plus depth at kicker means little if none of them can consistently put it through the uprights, and so far we haven't seen it. Ask the HeadBallCop how that worked out for him at the QB position...bodies don't equal talent.

...and DE if Marshall leaves. We will be dependent on the magic of Foster next year with the DL/LB issues. Under a mortal DC, it could be brutal to be lacking so much depth.

Law of averages I guess is where my mind is.

If we have the ability to have 5 QBs, one will have the talent to play and hopefully play well.

Same wih other positions. I thought about putting WR on there, but I don't think the knowledge we have at that position will trump bodies.

Willie Byrn (yes he will) and Stanford will be good enough next year to play at every stadium in the country. I feel like their maturity will elevate them higher even though I hate the argument that seniors = better.

Knowles will be a deep threat a la aDavis but I don't think he will turn into what Andre did, who only had Mike Vick tossing him the ball, but I feel he could be as good if not better on ST.

Can he play QB too?

Regarding Slye, he's a very talented athlete. As a Freshman, he started on the Varsity soccer team that won the State Championship that year. He also was selected as all-state for kicker. And given everything that his family has been going through, I hope he gets a scholarship offer sooner rather than later.

EDIT: My reasoning for why I hope he gets a scholarship is because his older brother has been fighting an uphill battle with leukemia for the past year and a half. Despite the amount of support they have received from the community, I'm sure the family could use something positive right about now and something to lighten their load.

He sounds like quality. Amen to him getting a scholarship if he transitions well to college.

He is only 5'11" and 195lbs, but that was Cody Grimm size...

Who would we consider the front runner for the PK spot?
Santamaria?

Hell even if he doesn't start at linebacker and isn't the kickoff guy, I see a way of getting a quality special teams addition (since he can tackle) without having to use a "starter". A small part of our ST woes are due to having to dress so many damn kickers who don't contribute in any other way. I see this as a 2 birds with 1 stone thing.

We could go with an all TE offense and an all kicker special teams....just imagine....11 hard hitting kickers running down the field.
Santamaria played safety in HS also...

VHokie

can't do that, Sam Rogers is a FB.
