Watching UVA run 8 plays inside the 10 yard line on their first drive and coming away from zero points.... and then on their next trip running a jet sweep to the weak side that lost yards..... Are they taking notes from us???

WF looks real disciplined which is what you'd expect from a Junior/Senior led team.
UVa's defense still looks awful but their offense's ineptitude is surprising. I thought their offense was looking real good but that may have just been a virtue of playing awful defenses.

Considering what UVA did to UNC last week, and watching what Wake is doing now... I think the Deacs may be the representative in the ACCCG. Their game against Clemson is going to be a good watch... maybe even prime time.

During the broadcast of Mid Tenn game, Bill Roth asked Bruce Arians about his last second QB sneak to beat UVA in C'ville. There attending the game live, I thought he made it across the line. Arians said he was in. Refs said he wasn't. Game to Uva. No TV, no replay. Blamed the bad call on ACC refs. It's always been a thing for the Hoos.

Decided to do a little late-night data collecting.....
Between last week vs UNC and this week vs Wake Forest, UVA's defense has been on the field for 18 total drives. They've given up....
12 Touchdowns
5 Field Goals
Forced one turnover (A Sam Howell pick inside the 5 yard-line).
And haven't forced a single punt.
THAT is certifiably awful.... we better put up 35+ on these guys.

I actually didn't hate the call. They had momentum and wanted to put them away. They lost because of the fumble on their next drive, not because of the 4th and goal.

Somehow I managed to listen to the UVA game on 1140 wrva from Richmond all the way to York Pa tonight, am radio is weird as hell.
Listening to the UVA feed they harped and harped on how bad this defense is and how inept at getting stops and when they did they committed fouls to bail out wake. The streak for scoring drives was mentioned so many times on each series. They were not optimistic in uvas ability to beat many teams after tonight's game.

Yes kids, all the local am stations signed off at sundown, usually with a patriotic tune. I could get WLS Chicago in the Va hills the rest of the evening.
While traveling I'd search out a weak staticy am station and listen as it cleared up approaching the town. Lots of local flavor could be discerned from the local ads. It helped the miles past quicker.
Then this new thing came out, FM. Like Steely Dan said, "...no static at all...".

I read that Clawson really emphasizes solid play on all three aspects of football. It sounds so obvious and fundamental, but they really have showed it in their last four games. I wish we could say the same...

Backgrounds are different, but they are both very average coaches.
Point is, Fleck doesn't impress me any more than Fuente.
He gets alot of media love because of his personna and shtick, but other than being much more media and fan savvy than Fuente, don't think he brings any more to the table.

Fleck coached Minnesota to their winningest season in program history, after improving them from 5 wins, to 7, then 11. He also coached Western Michigan to their winningest season in program history, after improving them from 1 win, to two 8 win seasons, to a 13 win season.
He's won big everywhere he's been, Not sure how you can call him 'average'
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Fleck is coming off a 3-4 season and is now 2-2 with one loss and one narrow Win over MAC Programs. That's better than average???
Yes - You gotta look at trends. There's a difference between winning 5 games in your first season, then 7, then 11, vs winning 10, then 9, then 6.
At a G5 level, he looked like a star, at a P5 level he's gonna be a 7-8 win guy more often than not....seem familiar?
The difference is that B10 is harder than the ACC. Minnesota plays Wiscy, Iowa, and (typically) Michigan/OSU/PSU. Not to mention that it's much harder to recruit to Minnesota than VT. Winning 8 games/year at Minnesota is way more impressive than winning 8/year at VT.
Fleck is a far better coach than Fuente. Not saying I want him at VT, but calling Fleck 'average' is flat out wrong.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Failing to fully understand how a Coach with a less than .500 Record since being at the P5 level qualifies as more than Average. These numbers include the 2019 season, when they feasted on a weak BigTen West and somehow magically avoided Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State from the East.
The numbers speak for themselves. Fleck is Average at the P5 level when it comes to what actually matters---winning. He excels at marketing himself.

TL;DR - if you take over a bad team/program, and you have to take the team apart and start from scratch, it's going to be really tough to have a .500 record, because you're starting at such a low point. If you don't understand the concept of Year Zero, I don't know what to tell you.

11-2 followed by 3-4 and on track for 8-4 at best in '21 is progress??? What was year 1 exactly?
You are judged against your peers. Guy is sub-.500 against them. If it's so hard to turn around a Program, why has Pittaman turned an absolute mess around at Arky? In the SEC West that is orders of magnitude harder than the B1G West....
And how exactly does one come to the conclusion that it is harder to recruit to Minn than VT...what evidence is there for that?
Other than:
1. It's cold
2. Because you say so
The campus is located in a huge Metropolitan area with massively greater diversity, activities, nightlife, ect than Blacksburg. The student pop is ~50k, also bigger than VT. The area is much more accessible than Bburg-major airline hub with nonstop to every large and many small cities vs. flying to ATL/CLT then driving from ROA. They have a practically brand-new Stadium and Practice facility as well. Other than traditional success (most of which is now 10+ years in the rearview)...what is is VT's major advantage?

For PJ, Year 1 was 2017.
All I'm trying to say is that you just look at someone's overall record (in a vacuum) and determine if they are a good coach. PJ Fleck had to start from scratch, and improved his team every year for 3 straight years (and he did this twice, at two different schools). Then Covid happened, he had a ~.500 year. I think when he leaves Minnesota, you'll see a drop off there (because I don't think they can replace him with a coach of the same quality).
You are judged against your peers. Guy is sub-.500 against them. If it's so hard to turn around a Program, why has Pittaman turned an absolute mess around at Arky? In the SEC West that is orders of magnitude harder than the B1G West....
First of all, Pittman's record in his first 14 games at Ark is the same as PJ's records in his first 14 games at Minnesota (7-7). While Pittman's wins are more impressive, he also took over a team with a fair amount of talent:
And how exactly does one come to the conclusion that it is harder to recruit to Minn than VT...what evidence is there for that?
In the modern recruiting era (Post 2005), they've had one top-30 class, four top-40 classes, and eight classes outside the top 50. For all of our complaining at VT, we haven't recruited that badly. Minnesota has had 5 different coaches in that time. I think it's fair to say Minnesota is tough to recruit to.
In conclusion, f you're going to judge a coach on just their record, and ignore trends, improvements, difficulty of the job, etc, then I don't think we'll be able to agree here. I'm not saying that Fleck is a national title quality coach, or that he is even Chris Peterson level, but I think he's easily above average. Cannot say the same for Fuente.

So, the difference must be playcalling because UT has scored 14 puts on no. 11 UF in the first half. We couldn't score more than that in a full game against Richmond.

It looks like ND's QB got a little banged up today but they are optimistic he will play against Cincy next week (x-rays negative on the ankle). Wonder how good he will be feeling in 2 weeks.

Yeah...CornFu is the root cause yet again. The QB room has bottomed out. Two programs will have winning seasons this year with guys at QB that our coaches thought weren't good enough. Fuck.

Lol I love how they have been giving the Bear crap for his trivia questions. Had one this morning on Gameday with the answer from the 1800s and another just now on the Ou-WVU broadcast from like 1908. Dude you have to pick something that people might actually know.

Sigh..... I was hoping we'd never become THAT fanbase, but in fairness I guess every fanbase is leaning this way nowadays. Can we not just celebrate a win and enjoy watching other games and not talk like a random game between Tennessee and Florida shows how bad our coaches are? We're 3-1 with a win over a top ten team, guys. We have a real shot at the ACC title this year. Let's just see how it all plays out and cheer on the team the best we can. The constant crap in every thread is making TKP nearly unbearable.
And I know the angry mob is gonna hound me for this, but I know there's a lot of Hokie fans that feel the same way because I know plenty of them. GO HOKIES
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Celebrate a win that showed we could only put up 14 points on an fcs team?
Are our coaches bad because fuente got mad at hooker and made him transfer after dicking him around with Willis for 2 years where he might have a huge win in the swamp as a legit sec qb tonight?
We're 3-1 with a win over a top ten team that has looked pretty bad in their games and is losing to GT at the half?
We have a real shot at the ACC this year? Bro, we never had our car. Fuente has been coaching us for 3 presidents, and we have regressed in almost every way.
Asking us to be happy with where we are is a complete joke.
I'm sorry if everyone being upset that their beloved program isn't living up to their winning expectations is making the key play a sad place for you.

I wish I could give you more legs. Thanks for speaking up and my thoughts very much align with yours. I am going to cheer on this team and see how things play out. UNC has now dropped two games and winning the Coastal and the ACC is still a possibility. I'm hoping this team can come out rolling after the bye and shut down all this negativity.
I have avoided posting anything positive about this staff or team because just about any positive comments are crapped on by the folks that spin any positive news as a reason to fire Fuente. Case in point being folks saying, "we must really suck because Georgia Tech just beat UNC #FireFuente #MakeTheMove". Every thread seems to get steamrolled into a cesspool of suck for those that want to look at the positives. These boards are turning into an echo chamber for team #FireFuente.
I'm going back into the shadows and will keep on hoping for the best for this team and this staff until the season is over. Peace!
I'm tempted to say this means WVU is better than we thought. But on second thought Nebraska pushed Oklahoma hard last week so is WVU better than we thought???

GT all of a sudden looking like they have a pulse. At least they know how to score points which is more than I can say about this year's CornFu offense. Thank heaven for JHam doing his best Bud Foster imitation, or we would be FSU level bad.

Electric atmosphere at Scott tonight
Don't know what's worse...that "crowd" or UVA's D
They looked so solid against William & Mary
By "electric", did you mean static electricity?
Watching Wakes O with a closer eye in this one, do have to say Clawson stretches the field in ways I wish we would.
That's what she said
Watching UVA run 8 plays inside the 10 yard line on their first drive and coming away from zero points.... and then on their next trip running a jet sweep to the weak side that lost yards..... Are they taking notes from us???
Mike Morgan keeps saying
when the QBs pass. Gonna turn this into a drinking game.
This could be a good game for Hokie fans
loluva looking rough
Dave Clawson's team looking good ;)
WF looks real disciplined which is what you'd expect from a Junior/Senior led team.
UVa's defense still looks awful but their offense's ineptitude is surprising. I thought their offense was looking real good but that may have just been a virtue of playing awful defenses.
Armstrong can sling it but they don't have a run game and their o-line is looking like swiss cheese right now
Dozens of boos from the home crowd
You hate to see it. /s
Considering what UVA did to UNC last week, and watching what Wake is doing now... I think the Deacs may be the representative in the ACCCG. Their game against Clemson is going to be a good watch... maybe even prime time.
Clemson has to get by NCSU tomorrow for that game to mean anything.
We need to beat down Jalani Woods when we play the Hoos. He's a big man.
Maybe we can get this guy in some pads for that game?
Uva defense is porous.
Good thing our offense is so potent.
Lol, perfect, quick response...
Cuse beating the fighting Falwells
Something for us to aspire to....
(sigh.)
We can't even enjoy watching UVA get beat anymore....
Why?
UVA catching a break with a touchdown that should have otherwise been overturned as an incompletion... got the TD we shoulda had a week ago amiright?
Was shocked that they didn't review it. And then did review the wake td.
Unless UVA adds Lawrence Taylor mid season, VT *should* score at least 35
Uva has penalty issues.
You're telling me the team that lit up a WR that was completely out of a run play isn't disciplined?
Play in question https://twitter.com/bkcheel/status/1440026217089011718?s=19
Lowkey they always play dirty, even going back to some of the Welsh teams
Welsh wasn't past a bit of dirty play when he thought nobody was looking.
Y'all forget the dirty reputations broncos' byu team used to carry?
no, man, that's why I made the comment
Ah, got ya
Did UVa just decline a penalty in the red zone?!? Wow...

Based on what I have seen, I wouldn't mind Clawson and his staff here.
I've said on another post I'm hesitant to hire him but more and more he keeps changing my mind
UVA QB so bad a player can get concussed and still pick him off 😂
Sure would be nice if Wake can knock off UNC in a few weeks.
Would be nice, but oddly that is a non-conference game technically.
They're doing that again? Conference realignment ruins everything.
UVA hate galvanized.
The horrible OC play calling has been on full display tonight. We are not alone my friends
FUMBLEEEE
Kinda fun watching Liberty lose on a last second field goal....
Because they decided to go for it on 4th and goal from the 2 instead of kicking a field goal. Excellent
I actually didn't hate the call. They had momentum and wanted to put them away. They lost because of the fumble on their next drive, not because of the 4th and goal.

Wake is the most complete ACC team. Quick, someone spin the ACC wheel of destiny!!
Wake is very impressive. Clawson doing a heck of a job. He's going to probably have some options at the end of the season.
We will see if they can prove that against Clemson in November. I hope Wake beats them, of course.
I read that Clawson really emphasizes solid play on all three aspects of football. It sounds so obvious and fundamental, but they really have showed it in their last four games. I wish we could say the same...
On ACC Huddle :
uva's QB under pressure last night:
3-11 passing, 39 yards, SIX sacks.
Our D-line should feast like it's Turkey Day.
Wake Forest is a fun team to watch.
Watching the Lahoosers take it on the chin never gets old. Their complete lack of a pass rush is something of beauty.
I was legitimately wondering if UVA's d-line was even trying on Wake's first TD play
That was one of the most pathetic efforts I think I've ever seen on a football field. I've seen more effort from a DLine in a Pro Bowl
the whole entire defense Albert Haynesworth'd that play
Laughs in #FireSnyder
Proud that our guys make an effort. I've always believed our players have the desire and put in the work. What a sad rush from LOLUVA.
No longer in Madison, but ON WISCONSIN LET'S GO BADGERS!!! YOU BETCHA
Bowling Green leading Minnesota with 2:31 left. Would be a hell of an upset.
Refs beefing up the penalties against Bowling Green.
Edit: Minnesota muffed the punt @2:31, but somehow, in spite of many players on both teams touching it, Minnesota came up with it.
Notre Dame is gonna feast on our garbage o line. That game is gonna be ugly
End of that game seemed like a NCAA '13 video game.
I'm less worried bout ND than (insert pundit 'lock') any day.
Will be tense in our household.
Frosty is a polar bear from Texas and Baylor is his team.
My dad went to Iowa State.
Will be some battle :-)
I would LOVE for the ACC to sign a contract with Fox... I really like the broadcast.
PJ Fleck = Justin Fuente plus a personality.
Although, I must say Minnesota QB stared the LB down as he threw that last INT into his breadbasket, looked a bit suspicious.
I don't know how you see this... Fuente came up as on offensive coordinator; PJ was a position coach. PJ is a poor man's midwestern Dabo.
Backgrounds are different, but they are both very average coaches.
Point is, Fleck doesn't impress me any more than Fuente.

Is there a correlation of major Metropolitan centers with Football recruiting success?
Here are the 10 largest cities (by 2020 population) in the US, and the corresponding Universities [team talent rank of 231 universities listed]
1. New York City (8.8 Million): Columbia [214]
2. Los Angeles (3.9 Million): USC [10], UCLA [23]
3. Chicago (2.7 Million): Northwestern [44], Robert Morris [206]
4. Houston (2.3 Million): Houston [72], Rice [100], Houston Baptist [231]
5. Phoenix (1.6 Million): None
6. Philadelphia (1.6 Million): Temple [79], Drexel [NA]
7. San Antonio (1.4 Million): UTSA [77], Incarnate Word [192]
8. San Diego (1.4 Million): SDSU [95], UCSD [195]
9. Dallas (1.3 Million): SMU [56], UNT [75]
10. San Jose (1.0 Million): Stanford [24], SJSU [103]
Scott Loefller winning a game in a similar way to VT today, but as the underdog.
More things change the more they stay the same
BC and Wake should test Clemson this year
Oh goodness ND SLAUGHTERED Wisconsin in the fourth quarter. Which is good because I love ND and hate Wisconsin
A blowout that was an otherwise really good game. Weird.
Wild ending to the bc game
Heh I'm glad they won since Drinkowitz talked shit before the game
NCSU just trying to be too cute. Just do what you've been doing...
Agreed, the game is there for the taking...the ACC is such a mess it would be great for NC State to win
Georgia St leading Auburn 24-12 with 2 min until half
Damn, looks like Auburn gonna pull it out. Td with 45 seconds left to take the lead.
man, NCSU could have +2 TDs but their receivers keep getting T-Rex arms in the endzone
Bama would beat Clemson by 60
Pulling hard for the Pack
NCSU missed two FGs today. could be the difference.
Watching the ncst/Clemson game - RG3 is impressing as a commentator. Certainly better than any commentator we've had so far this year.
Had the exact opposite thought lol
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Really good in the booth, especially if this is his first time. I've never heard him on a game before.
Miami won 69-0
nice
Nice.
I thought you had to play down to your competition and put your backups in a high stress situation???
Galaxy brain move by Miami: They started their backup QB since King was hurt and avoided getting him first action of the season from his own 3
So much love but I was expecting the 'nice's that everyone else gave. They earned turkey legs. You earned this:
NC St is Clemsoning harder than Clemson is Clemsoning.
BIG OOF for the NC State kicker
He kept missing wide left... Gotta line up on the right hash there.
He's not going to have a job next week. He might not have a job for their next kick attempt.
NC State is Corn'ing!!
They were running against Clemson with relative ease and now they're passing it into the endzone in OT!
aaand as soon as I post that, they score on a pass play
Oh my word what a catch
That's the sound of any remaining Hokies jumping off the Tony Elliott train
Yup...
Welcome back, Clemson...
Ing
Let's get the ACC wheel going!
Welcome to the fuckin shit show, Clemson
Blows that this is the year to win the ACC but we can barely put Richmond away.
This was my first thought when I saw the Clemson score... ACC is wide open, and unfortunately, I don't see VT taking advantage of that
Far too many teams are at our level or better, our chances don't look good.
Pitt May be my favorite to win it.
Auburn should not have won that, then that garbage time defensive td means people who just check box scores won't know how badly they looked all game.
Really nice play design by TN there..fake WR screen, gave Hooker an easy TD throw and he put it on the money.
.....sigh.....
So Hendon Hooker looks good
Hendon Hooker looks like a Heisman candidate, Vols up 14-10. Why didn't Fuente whisper in his ear?
You clearly missed last week's game... I'm rooting for Hendon, but he's not playing any better or worse than he was last season.
Hooker looks like a deer in headlights, dude is going to lose his head if he keeps running
It's not their QB that will be the problem.
Kirk looked annoyed with that question. Lol
Sigh..... I was hoping we'd never become THAT fanbase, but in fairness I guess every fanbase is leaning this way nowadays.
GO HOKIES
Peace!

"These boards are turning into an echo chamber of firefuente"
And that's okay!
Unfortunately, that's where we are at this point in time. We're all hoping things will be better
Whoever downvoted this should know that the reason people are upset is because people are upset, but we're all Hokies and it is what it is.
It's okay if people want fuente to be fired after 6 years.
You can't expect everyone to be on the same page of peachy cheery.
Your fellow Hokie fans are not the problem, and never have been. Look again.
Also, Hendon Hooker plays for Tennessee. Nothing "random" about having an interest in that game.
Is UNC actually not good at all?
I'm watching the game trying to decide whether I should be happy that UNC may pick up another loss or if I should just be worried about GT.
I'm watching as well and I'm kinda worried about GT.
I'm more worried about BC
Their starting QB is out for the season. Not more worried about BC than any other ACC team.
Has it ever worked out for a "First Round QB" to lose all of their top WR and any running threat they had, and come back for another season?
He had to come back he wasn't eligible last year
I'm beginning to think we're not going to get undefeated Clemson v undefeated UNC for a playoff spot in the ACC title game
Maybe it's the NCAA circle of suck this year?
Hendon looks like he's put on a few pounds... I know this is something our staff has had trouble doing with quite a few players.
Putting on weight isn't hard...
Cartman always gets a leg.
West Virginia is up 13-10 on #4 Oklahoma with about 5:00 left in the third.
I'm tempted to say this means WVU is better than we thought. But on second thought Nebraska pushed Oklahoma hard last week so is WVU better than we thought???
Don't operate any heavy machinery after using transitive property this season.
Only 4 weeks in and it's positively disorienting.
Feeling better about our loss last week with Oklahoma struggling to score
Oklahoma is overrated seen both their games
I can't feel good about a loss where we had 12 snaps inside the 5 yard line and failed to score a single point.
Oh believe me, an L never "feels good". But Oklahoma had a couple redzone attempts stuffed too.
The Circle of Suck is alive and well. all teams are equally worthless.
GT just got screwed, clearly wasn't down
ACC officiating is truly awful.
Georgia Tech just got hosed out of what could have been one of the coolest TD runs I've ever seen
Oklahoma wins 16-13 on a walk-off field goal.
GT all of a sudden looking like they have a pulse. At least they know how to score points which is more than I can say about this year's CornFu offense. Thank heaven for JHam doing his best Bud Foster imitation, or we would be FSU level bad.
Humble Dabo makes me happy!
*Humbled
He's always humble. It's just Dabo and lil ol Clemson fighting against the big dogs of cfb /s
Watching his aw shucks routine when they legitimately are average at best on offense is pure gold. Generational talent gone, so it's not going to be easy anymore!
