Barring a last minute change, the expectation is for Virginia Tech cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith to be retained on Brent Pry's staff. Smith had a standing offer on the table from Virginia Tech and has turned down other opportunities to remain with the #Hokies.— Mike McDaniel (@MikeMcDanielSOS) December 8, 2021
Pry's defensive staff continues to come together!

It's clear the emphasis is on good recruiters...refreshing
It is? Then why bring on a DC with a less than stellar recruiting profile? And how is keeping someone on staff refreshing?
Having said that, as long as one isn't utterly incompetent, I don't think recruiting prowess is a hugely important skill set.
Because focusing on recruiting doesn't mean absolutely everyone needs to be a great recruiter. Let the DC focus on managing the defense and delegating to his assistants the guys he wants to fit his scheme and let them do the recruiting
Hey tkp if it wasn't clear in is other 40 comments on the matter marcb2 does not like the DC hire.
Marcb salty as can be . Come on chill already
Marve's recruiting ability (or supposed lack thereof) is - by far - the least of my concerns with his hire. I'll take a great coach over a supposed great recruiter in a heart beat every time.
But how does one reconcile that recruiting is clearly an emphasis when the consensus on
thePry's most high profile hire so far is he isn't a particularly good recruiter?i thought the highest profile hire so far was Brent Pry and the consensus was that he is pretty good
Take your leg, dammit.
Post corrected for clarity.
because sequence doesn't matter; we need to see the whole picture
There is no consensus on Marve. This is a common problem with internet discourse, one unreliable source gets cited as fact, and then repeated ad nauseum until it just feels true, because everyone is saying it. But in truth it all stems from a single source who's validity is questionable.
Think of it this way: if you saw one Florida state fan say he's nothing special as a recruiter would you take that as absolute fact? Or would you just see it as one fan's opinion, a fan who isn't even particularly well informed and withhold judgement until you had more info? If it's the latter then the number of people who jump to a conclusion using the same incomplete info shouldn't matter.
Thanks for clearing that up. The ambiguity was killing me.
Live look at marcb2:
Because you need a diverse skill set and if you already have several great recruiters, adding another one probably doesn't improve your recruiting that much (law of diminishing returns.) Not every assistant is going to be great at every skill required of a coach.
Just give it a rest on the criticism of the Marve hire (both direct and indirect.)
So which is it - a clear emphasis on recruiting or a staff with a balanced skill set?
My opinion of the Marve hire had nothing to do with my comment. But your comment - which I largely agree with btw - seems to acknowledge recruiting doesn't appear to be Marve's strong suit.
I will not stop giving my opinion as long as people continue to try to disabuse me of it.
You're not going to win this, trust me.
It's clear Pry is the DC. He's hiring people he knows can teach and run his system, potentially saving money to hire a top OC to run their system. -that's what it looks like to me
But I agree with marcb in the sense that some of y'all are evaluating "ability to recruit" solely on what 247 says. They aren't gospel, you can't understand whether someone is a good recruiter simply based on who they are listed on as being a primary recruiter...
Maybe not, but it's the best indicator that we're privy to. So people go off of what they got.
Hey junior, Pry is not a moron. Give the situation a chance to play out and then criticize.
You're right, I should give it chance to play out and then criticize - unless of course, the criticism fits the forum narrative at the moment.
Irony alert
Dude needs some pie
Bigly.
I'll take the word of a national college football writer like Richard Johnson before I'll listen to FSU message boards.
Richard Johnson, how redundant
Well I'm not gonna say that to his face.
Can we bring these uniforms back?
I don't make that decision, but I'm gonna say yes anyways because it's the correct answer.
No. We'll lose to Syracuse
That happened in those uniforms back in the day, too.
I don't think that is specific to those uniforms, but I could be wrong.
10.23.21
10.15.16 too. Different uniforms.
National college writers thought Fuente would be great for us
Edit: I'll drink
I mean I guess. He's hired two good recruiters and one was currently on staff
YES!
Nicely done
Coach Smith and Coach Cheetah on the recruiting trail together could be a lockdown combination!
TKP...
...
...harder
Lockdown combination to bring in lockdown DBs and keep DBU alive. I like it.
So we have:
That probably fills up the defensive staff right? Next up is Special Teams, S&C, Offensive staff.
How sure are we that Hilgart is gone? I know a lot of us WANT to see him gone, but is S&C usually replaced in a coaching change?
Now it is. With all of the rules about the amount of time coaches can be with players, the S&C staff is who is with the players more than anyone else.
Sooo... with it being signing day and all... was this fake news? Anyone else getting worried? Thought it'd be a done deal by now.
I really wish we could keep Teerlinck but I get it.
Any particular reason why?
I don't know if what he teaches jives with Pry's scheme or philosophy, but he seemed like an awesome dude with NFL experience, and his dad has a defensive lineman award named after him. I feel like you can't get much better than that. He also seemed like a really good teacher which is something I always look for in coaches. We all know the math teacher that is a genius but can't teach the methods or theory behind it. Loeffler was one of those. In the videos I saw, Teerlinck sounded like a really good teacher.
We need a monster recruiter at the other DL position. DL recruits are highly sought after and extremely impactful and we need to get them in. Some of the best recruiters in the country are DL coaches. JC sells the spirit of VT but we likely need a closer along with Pry when we're going against PSU, Clemson, UNC, etc.
In the social media stuff from today which coaches were in the Lane Stadium box for all the announcements ?
I've seen all of the current coaches (the ones listed as such on HokieSports.com) except perhaps Jones. He may have been in the background somewhere, but I know I saw Marve, Quinn, and Holt in addition to (obviously) Pry and Price.
How long til we find out it was his brother, marcSalad, this whole time?
I kept getting bad vibes the more this thread kept getting 2-4 comments with no announcement made. Damn that sucks
Narrator: He was not.
Mike McD is now on the naughty list
