Scared (practice squad) money don't make (practice squad) money. Hopefully he can make enough of an impression to kick it around the league a little bit, even if it's just a practice squad player.

Hey 35 grrrr is 35 grrr!

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Congratulations to Ryan. Hope he does well. Always seemed to have the natural talent. Just could never put the game together.

But this still causes frustration with the past. Really happy to have a new regime coming in. What could Willis have been with competent QB coaching and a real offensive design when at VT? The world will never know.

Haha never underestimate TKP's ability to blame everything on Fu and staff. It's gonna be 2042 and some of y'all are gonna be on here saying, "Gosh darn, if only we had scored in the red zone against West Virginia in 2021, things today would be so much different!" /s /s

Totally. It is well understood that Ryan's main issues were driven by his lack of maturity in college. He is very talented and I hope he has grown past that and is successful with the Bears.

I don't think anyone thought Willis with the right coaching was the next Tom Brady or anything, but I also can't think of a single QB under CornFu that played better his final year than his first year. At best they remained the same (Hooker, Patterson, Jackson), at worst they regressed (Willis). There was a definite problem developing QBs at VT under Fu.

It's almost like defensive coordinators figured out which single read plays Corn had schemed up for a particular QB and then adjusted the next season. And there were zero secondary reads available to counter adjustments.

Tru dat. Listened to a Jerrod Evans interview where he tried to be diplomatic, etc. but basically said he got better QB coaching at Trinity Valley Community College than he got at VT. That moment combined with the Kill experience tilted me to the "Corn is a total Clown" crowd.
Update tidbit. Jerrod now playing for the Tokyo Gas Creators (no really, not a joke) a team in Japan's XLeague.

I hope when he throws the ball for them he really lets it rip. I'm sure he blew them away when he tried out.

Wait, was there a shadow coaching staff in charge of the program this whole time?!?!? This is a curious and ill-timed comment.

Willis needed to develop off the field, no doubt about that. But they failed to develop him on it

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Wow! That's amazing never thought I'd see that happen...congrats, Ryan!

That man's legacy will forever be part of Hoke lore.... Chasing down that LOLUVA DB was a thing a beauty. And when he was done, he walked off to the locker room like a boss.

Go get em Mr. Willis!

Is coronavirus over yet?

Crazy arm talent - hope he does well

Congratulations! Keep putting that work in and make the most of it. HOKIE NATION IS PROUD!

Will Hazelton be his roommate?

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Shoutout to this legend that I sat next to in a random elective during his first semester at VT.

Also never forget that Ryan Willis outplayed Daniel Jones head to head in 2018.

Although it's just practice squad, with all these covid cases in nfl, who knows, maybe he can see some action

Good for Ryan Willis. He went an alternate route, but never gave up on the dream. Hope manages to stick in the NFL for awhile.

RW gonna come off the bench in the playoffs. He'll throw for 285 yds, 2 td 2 int and make a game saving tackle.

Da Bears will win the superbowl that year. He'll never take another snap, and will later open a successful chain of sports bars with Jim McMahon called "Money".

If he chases down another player from scoring a TD, the sports bars should be called: "Pursuits of Happiness"

"Nooooooooooo!"

"Oh my God.... They're gonna take all our recruits... like WTF bro...."

Which year is this????

Willis was always a warrior for the Hokies, despite the limitations of very suspect coaching. Super glad to see him reaching his goals.

Hey, practice squad is getting your foot in the door. One of the two active quarterbacks go down, and he'll be activated. Not like QBs don't get hurt (or sick w Covid) in the NFL from time to time. Some guys hang on at the practice squad level for years before they finally stick.

Wasn't he playing in some kind of Arena-type league the last couple years? I seem to recall seeing something like that. If so, staying active has paid off.

Best of luck, Ryan - chase your dream!

One of the QBs getting Covid is how Ryan Willis got called up to the practice squad.

opportunity knocks in many ways. gotta put yourself in the right places to catch it when it happens and he's done that.

Congrats and good luck to him!

Ryan Willis was "flexed" to the Chicago Bears 53-man roster this past weekend for the Seattle Seahawks game.
He was to possibly replace the current backup quarterback Justin Fields, if Fields had not sufficiently recovered from an ankle injury. The Bears starting quarterback is Nick Foles.

Willis did not play, and was sent back to the practice squad after the game. At least he got to dress on game day.

Does that mean he also got a game day check instead of the practice squad pay? I'd imagine a big difference

I have no idea, but I imagine he'd get 1 game week's worth of league minimum pay.

Edit: a little light googling says the league minimum for players on the roster is $660,000/year, and base salary is spread out across the regular season game weeks. So if he got 1/16th of the league minimum he made a cool $40,000. Not bad for a week's work.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

Minimum pay for the practice squad is $9,200 per week. If you make the active roster then minimum pay is $36,667 per game. From googling, I gathered that a practice squad player can be "flexed" up to the game day team twice before being placed on the active roster. So I'm not 100% sure of game day pay for a one game call-up. Open to any additional insights.
