PSA: BigGameBoomer should not be taken as fact

I feel like this is something we'll need to remind ourselves as we get into the late summer and early fall as more and more of their lists start going viral again.

But in case you wanted to see a great example of why you shouldn't ever trust this twitter user as fact-based....

With this wonderful follow-up

This whole user's schtick is just putting up ranked lists based on the opinion of one person. Remember this.

I completely agree with you.

However...man's got a point on the BBQ.

Now, BBQ ain't the end all be all, but it IS, for all intents and purposes, the Michael Vick of food. Do you need it to win? No. But if you have it...oooooh, boy!

If you play it, they will win.

Due South is pretty dang good. There are other places as well, but I would argue half are in Cburg.
As for variety, we have it all in Blacksburg.

Um...Due South is in C'burg.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Also, I personally feel like it's fallen off in quality significantly from what it was 10 years ago even if it was in Blacksburg.

I agree, I ate there late last summer and the pork was very dry and flavorless. Haven't been back since. Mission BBQ in Cburg has been getting my business over Due South since.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Don't get me wrong. I'll eat at Mission BBQ. However, there's something wrong when the best BBQ restaurant in your area is a chain.

The closest place to Blacksburg with good BBQ is Three Little Pigs in Daleville.

If you play it, they will win.

I'm a fan of Bluegrass BBQ in Giles (Cody Journell's restaurant)

Does it come with a free headbutt?

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

The BBQ itself isn't bad, but their NC sauce is blandest I have ever had.

If you play it, they will win.

Eh blacksburg food scene isn't really that great other than a few places. It's just a small town with bars. On campus food is great but I don't think that is what the account is saying.

VT has amazing food on campus. The town of Blacksburg has good food, but really lacking in variety.

Twitter me

In all likelihood the quality of the cafeterias suffocates the local food scene a little bit, especially in a college town that's so dependent on the university. Why would you spend money off campus when the on campus food is so good?

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Speaking from a cadet experience, Sub Station II and Mike's were a closer walk and better food than anything coming out of Shultz. I think they have more options that are closer now, but that was always my excuse.

Lived in Thomas Hall, we called Shultz -> Shitz. Sub Station II is undefeated.

Fun fact, Schultz doesn't even exist any more - got taken down nearly a decade ago when they built the arts center and redid all of the Corps housing.

Holy shit that was a decade ago?

(add if applicable) /s

Damn, and here I was thinking it was a good deal longer.

WTF is time anyway? If there is one thing COVID killed...that's it.

If you play it, they will win.

Time is an illusion. Lunch time doubly so.

Thomas Hall is gone too - RIP

I wasn't a cadet but was put in that hall in 2010, luckily got approved for off campus housing by Thanksgiving that year. I did thoroughly enjoy Shultz breakfast buffet though!

Updog for life!

When I was a student a million years ago, Shultz was the only dining hall that served real scrambled eggs at breakfast. On the weekends I'd walk all the way from WAJ for non-powdered eggs.

But outside of a few downtown staples Mike's, Substation II, Carol Lee Donuts - 80s food options were pretty abysmal. Controversial opinion - it peaked in the early 00s with the best array of local fare like Poor Billy's, etc. Run over to Cburg and Due South had amazing brisket (circa 2010). Then the chains started to arrive - goodbye Mike's, hello Moes, etc.

I don't think Bburg deserves it's rank, but having moved near Athens and UGA country, I can understand it's ranking. Want amazing bbq - fight over which place. Maybe Iberian? Done. Cuban? Delicious. We lost the legendary Varsity thanks to COVID lockdown, but the sheer array of food in a big town that isn't dominated totally by the uni is pretty amazing.
That said, I still miss sunny first games in Lane with a big snowcone (with a little spiced rum added). A big turkey leg any time I wanted besides Thanksgiving, and the view from the nosebleed stands of the mountains all around us. UGA will never have that.

In the early 80's, Owens would serve real eggs on Sunday morning if you were up early enough, but it was powdered eggs the rest of the time.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

But many of those places in the list on the left, haven't got a decent taco joint.
Thus, invalid.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

BBQ is fine but with the fancy nature of BBQ joints today, they will not survive in a college town. Few college kids are going to be shelling out $12 for a pulled pork sandwich and two sides. $17 brisket ain't happening. Good college food is the awesome burger joint and addictive pizza that can be had on a budget. It's the Wednesday wings and a beer special you hit up every other week. So unless there is an old school grungy BBQ joint the kids can afford, rank Blacksburg BBQ on those cravable turkey legs and move VT to the good side of the list.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

RIP Gumby's. Thought this was a good place for this.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

Austin is one of the food capitals right now and UT isn't even on that list? Bullshit. also NCSU (Raleigh) should be higher

No BBQ?! Sounds like we need TheFifthFuller to investigate.

Clearly someone needs to visit all these towns and evaluate the food scene... for science.

Please send grants to my venmo.

To be a "Rib and Wing Joint," Sharkey's ribs are absolutely terrible. The need to change it to wing and burger joint and just take ribs off the damn menu.

Wings aren't that great either, they need to employ a rule that you cant order food until after your third drink

Until you pointed it out, I didn't realize I inadvertantly followed this rule at Sharkey's in my student days.

.... this is the most perfectly written thing I've ever seen on this site
-8300A_Hokie'12

I worked in the kitchen at Sharkey's when I was in school. Ribs were a pretty rare order but they're pre cooked fairly hot in an oven...(no offense to anyone that makes oven ribs but that severely limits how good they're going to be).

I'll agree with the wings now but I was in the kitchen when they switched from having a good size wing to the baby wings they had last time I was there. The OG wings were extremely good and the sauces are all pretty solid.

As everyone in this thread already knows their sandwich/wrap and burger game is really what they do best.

I doubt we're the 2nd worst, but honestly? It has merit. On campus food? Fantastic. Off campus? Meh.

maybe the food scene has changed since I was in the Burg but the food scene (off campus) wasn't much to write home about. I remember when they opened DP Dough it was a huge hit, if that tells you anything. The food around Blacksburg is fine but it's not a foody's paradise by any stretch of the imagination.

That said, I can tell these lists are just blind dart throws to stir up debate in the off-season.

via GIPHY

Onward and upward

I don't know if its 2nd worst, but I don't think you could argue with putting us somewhere on the Worst list. On Campus food is fantastic, but this list was more for the town and well, it's...fine. It's gotten better the last 5 to 10 years, but for the longest time the food scene was pedestrian. Not a lot of variety and for what was there, nothing that really wowed you either. I mean when a freaking Jimmy John's opens up downtown and people go nuts, that says a lot.

Considering the places we've lost in the last 5-10 years... it's not what it used to be.

There are some great spots. Avellinos and Zeppolis are good for Italian. We have fair Greek, Thai, and Indian places. Sub Station is a great sub shop. There isn't a quality Chinese place in town. There isn't a burger joint in town I'd go out of my way to go to. We lost boudreaux's, Mike's, and a handful of others in the last two years. More if you dig back farther.

Boudreaux's is gone!?! Imma gonna need a minute...

Devastating news. I'm going to be in The Burg this Bye Week in October, and usually make it a point to stop there.

Is there not a good Chinese place in town anymore? I remember a couple of places you had to order off the menu that was actually in Chinese to get the good stuff but there were a few decent places. I wasn't in town long enough the past couple of times I was down to try many restaurants.

I just want to say the best burger I've ever had was in Starksville. They also are the home to McAlisters (a good panera bread), and they have atleast one decent BBQ place, though might not be in Starksville ... but is in the golden triangle.

I guess that means we're number 1 ... I mean it's really Clemson, they suck

P.S. technically the best two burgers were from starksville, same place, I just went twice

Blacksburg has a McAlisters now too.

That alone should take the town out of 2nd worst ffs

Sure, but Starksville is the original, so everyone else is just a copy

Cabo is the best restaurant in town. Boudreaux was 2nd best in my opinion and it's closed. Was severely disappointed when I took my nephew for engineering day. Still love Macados, but honestly off campus is lacking. Also, as said above...Gumby's. Best drunk food...pizza & pokey sticks.

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

Cabo's was the best! Except it was called 117 So Main. Only served beer ands bands. But what else do you need?

...with spirits true and faithful...

Many good (but hazy memories of 117 S Main aka South Main Cafe. They did serve lunch (sandwiches and hot dogs I think) to meet the minimum food sales dollars that ABC required. And IIRC they had some kinda barfood REALLY early in the evening but stopped way before the music and crowd got rolling but I could be misremembering. I do remember seeing steady-rolling Bob Margolin there though.

The Cellar

Never go The Cellar hungry. Always go just after you ate. Then you'll be hungry when your food arrives.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This is verifiably true. When I moved back to Blacksburg and lived near campus, we would hit up Henderson hill for the Friday night music in the summer. We had two kids under 5 and tried to get food at the cellar exactly once where all of us sat at the table. The kids lost it waiting that long. Every time after, my wife would get a table outside and order and I'd run the kids ragged on the hill across the street. She'd wave us over when the food came. Absolute best way to experience he cellar (for food)

I do love The Cellar, but Souvlaki needs to give them their "You can't complain about the service here, there isn't any." sign.

If you play it, they will win.

I'm pretty sure i figured out that if even one person in your group orders a pizza then the whole order takes forever. There's probably not enough infrastructure for them to crank them out as quickly as they're ordered and they run behind accordingly. But if everyone orders a Not Pizza, it's reasonable

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Macados alone should keep VT off this list. Some of the best bar food you'll find.

How old are you? Macados was good. Not really a fan anymore personally.

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

36. I've had Macados in Radford within the past year and other than not getting a frisbee when ordering my Macado's Flyer, still as good as ever.

TBF the one in Radford is better. I was definitely assuming you were my Dad's age and hadn't been there in forever, but also maybe you haven't been to the Blacksburg one. Or maybe you have and you still like it. People have different tastes. Probably doesn't help that they either removed or changed my go to from the menu 6-7 years ago (the Jackie Gleason).

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

How are we this deep into a food thread and no one has mentioned Carol Lee's. Like shit y'all, don't disrespect the doughnut game when it's one of our strong points. The only 2 negatives for Carol Lee's are 1. they aren't downtown anymore (I don't think the ever were while I've been alive) and 2. they don't make hot doughnuts later in the day. Can't tell me some hot Carol Lee doughnuts wouldn't sell well on a Friday/Saturday night downtown. Still if you're ever around North Main in the morning there's no reason not to stop by. It's too damn good.

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

I mean, I like donuts, but if a discussion of your food scene hinges on that, then Houston, you do have a problem.

exactly

Onward and upward

I don't completely disagree with you. Much of the formerly best food is gone, and a lot of the current best stuff is corporate. Carol Lee's deserves a mention at a minimum though.

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

Is Georgia even the second best college town food scene in it's state?

Its only competition is Atlanta, and that's just unfair.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Sounds like Joe & Co. need to make a culinary bbq investment for the town and call it TKP - The Key Pig

"College town food" is all about unique places that offer good, quick, cheap food. Unique places that you don't necessarily find in every town/city that even out-of-town people will appreciate and make a point to come back to. Not microbreweries, chains, higher-end restaurants and stuff that older alumni like.

Blacksburg has always been really, really lacking in this department in terms of off-campus offerings and I feel like anyone who says otherwise has never been to another big college town. Benny's is their best and really only offering in this department that sticks out more than an average place, and even that has only been there for a decade and has already franchised out to every college town on the east coast (though I will still count it for Blacksburg being the OG location). Souvlaki and Sub Station 2 sort of fit this bill but to be honest I think they're just "good" and don't really offer anything better or worse than a typical deli or gyro place. Carol Lee's is obviously great but I don't really count it either since they aren't really a reliable place in terms of always being open/having the same offerings available every time you go.

Big Game Boomer is a joke and the "BBQ joint" reasoning is weird but I don't disagree with this general assessment at all.

Charlotte has a food stand (The Premiere Chef) that sells fall off the bone turkey legs that beat the hell out of what you buy in Lane. There's someone a golden ticket idea to steal.

Or be like Cabo and have the stages of life menu. You have the El Cheapo marg, for when you are a student, 75% of the margs for when you have some income, and the Cabo Wabo $20 marg for when your kids finally leave the house. Same with the taco options.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

Putting good tequila in a pre made mixer margarita is a giant waste. I wouldn't put good tequila into a hand mixed margarita. But, I like tequila.

At the risk of starting a war, I'm willing to bet our alumni's collective BBQ experience is higher than other schools.

I read in article in the Washington Post years ago that said: Virginia is the home of BBQ. I'm not sure what wood was used back when it was created, but BBQ originated in Virginia. The article referenced some ancient tome that had recipes and what type of wood was used.

If had lots of money and expertise, I'd open a place in downtown Blacksburg doing all that extremely well.

still has Clemson too high. Running down a hill is vastly overrated IMO

Onward and upward

Same. I have never understood what is so special/exciting about their entrance. I'll never forget their entrance for the 2013 game vs FSU. Easily the most bloated thing I've ever seen - come out of facility, file whole team onto charter buses, drive halfway around the stadium, file whole team off charter busses, rub rock, run down hill, balloons, get blown out 51-14.

I would rank Clemson higher if they actually walked around the stadium and ran down the hill. The whole bus things loses big points.
