Trip Report: First time RV'ing in the Duck Pond Public Lot

We stayed/tailgated in the duck pond public RV lot for the first this weekend. There's not a lot of good information about how this works, so I figured I'd write up a trip report for other first timers.

Summary: After a bumpy start, a great time was had by all and we'll definitely be doing it again.

Arriving and parking is a bit of a cluster. Lot opens Friday at noon, we got there around 1:20. What they don't make clear is that students park in this lot and don't have to be out until 5, so it's a mess. There was also a large area blocked off for construction staging right now, so it really limited the space available. When we got there, there were a lot of RVs already set up but there was one spot open with enough room for our small trailer. After we got in, they closed off the lot. There is an attendant that "directs" you, but the direction is him pointing to an area and you figuring out what to do. There's also nothing stopping you from moving later if there's a different spot open that you like better, as we'll see later. As the day goes on, students leave and more RVs are allowed in. The attendant will hand you a lot code that you use to pay your $150 fee on the Park Mobile app.

The next day started out rough. To make a long story short, some things got moved around and an RV squeezed into a spot we thought they couldn't, so we woke up to tailgate to find two motorhomes with their generator exhaust aimed right at us. We're sitting in generator hell. So loud we could barely hear each other and reeking of exhaust. Thankfully we were able to find a small open area where we could move our trailer (having a small trailer is a plus), otherwise the day would have sucked. Moral of the story, be weary of other peoples generator exhaust.

The rest of the day was great. Both pregame and postgame tailgating were awesome. Shoutout to the weather for somewhat cooperating. Once people got things set up, driving becomes tricky. So if you have to leave to get something, do it early. As the day moved on, this got worse, because more and more people showed up and parked. This is supposed to be limited to RVs, tow vehicles, and tow behind vehicles. It was not policed at all on gameday.

Leaving the next day was also a bit of a mess. Many of the aforementioned extra cars were still parked, making it a challenge. Thankfully we were able navigate around and make it out early (again, having a small trailer is a plus). If you are parked in the middle of the lot, especially with a large RV, be prepared to be there a while Sunday morning. There is a dump station at the back of the lot you can use on your way out. I was expecting to need to stop at Camping World in Roanoke to dump, so this was a pleasant surprise.

All in all, great trip.

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
