I saw a lot of players retweeting this, so I thought I'd put it here:
Team meeting without the coaches was a success! New mindset and this is going to be a new Virginia Tech football team. #Hokies— Luther Maddy (@BigLu_561) February 28, 2014
I don't have much to say about it, but I like the thought of the players getting their heads right and hopefully pumping each other up as they start spring ball. Determination, attitude, and hard work (aka Lunch Pail Mentality) have a lot to do with success. Let's hope that they motivated each other and prepare well for the upcoming season and that their enthusiasm translates well on the field. Go Hokies!

I love the new energy all the new coaches are bringing into the program. I can't wait for what the season will bring!
Wonder if Leal called it.
This makes me more excited about this season than I need to be, what with it only late February. Just like every year, its going to be a looooooong off season
I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting Leally excited for spring...
get it? LEAL-ly? LEALly?
...I'll see myself out

Just go
wonder what was lacking in last year's mindset
Sometimes, things just don't work out too well. Last year, the mindset wasn't the problem, the team was just limited by talent and technique problems that we just couldn't overcome. I remember Bruce Taylor talking during the 2012 season about how he was disappointed because the players-only meetings he called didn't have the same effect (wins) as the ones Tyrod & co called 2 years earlier. It wasn't that he was a bad leader, the team was just too limited in other areas for his leadership to make much of a difference. So no, I don't think there was anything necessarily lacking in the mindset last year, but it's awesome that the guys know that 8-5 is unacceptable and are determined to make this year special. It's a very good start, and it's awesome to see some leadership emerging early.
yeah, that's all understood. But I didn't say it, Maddy did. So i'm still wondering.
I'd say probably just that they're confident they'll get it done and they're gonna work their collective tails off to win.
yeah and I should have said correctly lacking/different because a "new mindset" doesn't automatically mean the previous was wrong
A great leader is often surrounded by great followers. Can't lead those who don't want to be lead. I think the respect that Tyrod and many others had from their players equalled the respect he had for them. They would give everything they've got for him because they knew he would do the same. It's a shame the team didn't always do that for Logan when he often gave everything he had.
Several guys were hitting the basketball court about a year ago, which didn't work out so well.
oh man maybe its how we need to start out strong, no more opening week struggles, granted its against good talent I think in the past 3-5 years VT has come out in the first few weeks really slow and it takes us until our ACC schedule to get going.
There's nothing more I would love to see than a convincing win against OSU, not a 3 point or OT win but a 14 or even a 10 point win. Can't wait for Spring to start I have no idea what to do until it does, maybe ill think of things I can do with a brick.
Careful. Everyone here(except maybe jsketch) would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to beat tOSU by 10 points or more but it's unwise to expect it or even get your hopes up. Urban Meyer, as much as I don't like him, is a good coach and tOSU is a talented team. They're certainly beatable but I just don't think the coaches have had enough time to put together a squad capable of doing it quite yet. I am waiting to see how this season plays out before looking at the 2015 match-up in Blacksburg, but if our whole team shows progress as I expect it to, that may be a more realistic time for us to get a W. Now if we were playing tOSU in the middle of the season the story might be different...but nobody really knows what's going to happen. That's why they play the game! I've just learned not to get my hopes up too high. I hate losing, but it hurts more when I'm expecting a win. I try not to label any game as a guaranteed win or loss.
ABSOLUTE NONSENSE! #BEATBRUTUS
How I think the mindset for spring and the season should be.....
Who does everyone think the 4 permanent captains will be this year (If Frank goes with all permanent captains again)??
Next Year's Seniors starting the leadership transition process. Seems it was a great success. Gotta like that.
With a new QB certain and some serious position competitions (including QB) coming up, the seniors have to lead by example and get the team focused for Spring practice. I'm glad their execution went as they hoped. I'm sure Leal was involved and had a lot to do with the meeting (along with other seniors).
Go Hokies!!
