Devin Carter Cleared to Return for ACCs

The VT Wrestling team receive HUGE news today: Devin Carter, who tore his hamstring on December 6th and was expected to miss the entirety of the rest of the season, will compete in the ACC tournament this Saturday in Blacksburg. Before his injury, Carter was considered one of the top wrestlers in the country and was having a very good season, sitting at 12-0 on the year. Now, he'll try to continue his success after making an extremely quick recovery. Here's the link to HokieSports for anyone interested.

A couple notes:
- He suffered "a complete avulsion of his hamstrings from his pelvis." I'm no doctor, but that sounds awful
- He suffered his injury during a match against a wrestler from UVA and still freaking won.
- He was supposed to be out for 6-9 months and came back in about 4. That's the result of good luck, a ton of hard work and excellent doctors.
- Tickets for Saturday's ACC tournament, hosted by VT, are only $5 in advance and $10 at the door. If you want to purchase tickets, you can do so here
*EDIT* Good news for students with a valid ACC ID: we get in free!

An avulsion means that the muscle pulled part of the bone off from his pelvic Girdle.

Yes because we needed even MORE graphic detail than what the name implied...
/sarcastica, no offense intended!

If we want to up the grossness ante, theres always Dyrell Roberts' compartment syndrome picture:

I thought that was like a freaking lobster for a second

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I was thinking an oddly prepared baked potato...

That's just...how did you...never mind.

That must have been awful to endure.

"Exit light..."

I just got done reading all about compartment syndrome. Aparently, it can be life-threatening. It is often more painful than the injury that caused it, and sometimes requires amputation.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

Yes. Compartment syndrome is high on my list of 'Things that I don't want'-up there with necrotizing fasciitis, and higher up than AIDS.
It is a bad day for everyone involved.

There's actually an ex...CNN? Reporter... guy by the name o'brien I believe, that recently had to have his arm amputated because of compartment syndrome

EWWW!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I was stunned to see that headline today. Its a helluva lot of adversity to jump right into tournament time after being sidelined so long, but Carter has the skills to get it done regardless.

Joe Spisak is probably not thrilled with this development.

Yeah, no kidding. Dresser said he's had two weeks of really good practice and Carter apparently dominated Spjut, who had bumped up a weight class to fill in.

Carter could probably dominate Spjut even if he was still injured, he's been out of place since he got to campus. He doesn't really have the quickness or reach to compete above 133 and with Garnett entrenched at 125 when he got on campus, Spjut was only going to see action being a fill in. Great kid and I'm glad he got a win on senior night, but getting Carter back would be a huge boost. 12-0 with 8 pins to start the season, he was going to do a lot of damage.
Saturday is going to be a fun day in Cassell. Hope to see a lot of the stands full cheering on the Hokies to get back to back ACC titles.

You're spot on about Spjut. Great kid, great for him to get such a good win on senior night, but he's a bit over his head. I just hope Carter is 100% and in decent shape.

I'll definitely be there, cheering obnoxiously and providing updates on the Hokies!

That reminds me of Xavier Adibi's comeback from I believe a complete avulsion of his bicep. There was an article about how they used biodegradeable screws that were state of the art developed by engineers at Tech to help him recover that fast.

I remember that. It made horses on treadmills seem downright ordinary.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

No it didn't

I love the part where he beat someone from UVA with only one leg.

"Oh look at you with your fancy little hamstring still attached to your pelvis. BOOM, you STILL lost."

Looks like more good news for Hokie wrestling:

*EDIT* And here they are.

Mo bettah seeds than the Dept of Agriculture.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Haha, nice. So if Spisak (UVA) wins his first round match, he'll be the first guy Carter wrestles.

Yup. He hasn't had much success this year, even with Carter's pelvis/hamstring in multiple pieces.

Here are the NCAA auto bids. That puts Gustafson, Mastriani, and Gabel needing to exceed their seeds. Moon and Walz need to hold or better.

Don't get how Gus earns 1 of the 2 qualifier spots for the league, yet he still gets seeded 3rd. In the end, won't matter since he'll probably would've had to beat Martinez either way, but doesn't make any sense to me. Unless there are extraordinary circumstances, like with Carter's situation, you would think if you earned a spot for the conference, you would just have to wrestle to your seed to make the NCAAs. Strange

So far, so good. All 10 Hokies advance to the semis. Got some tough matches ahead. As a team, Tech holds a narrow lead over Pitt.

Carter returns with a dominating, 11-takedown technical fall in the semis. Punched his ticket to the NCAAs and will wrestle for his 3rd straight ACC title later tonight.

What are the chances we can win a National title in wrestling this year? I honestly don't know a whole lot about the sport. I know we are really good and may possible win back to back ACC titles tonight.

Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hy!
Tech, Tech, VPI

Highly unlikely. We were a top 10 team last year with a bunch of seniors, and now we've got a 10 point lead heading into the finals with a bunch of freshmen. We'll be solid (top 20-15), but I think it'll be a year or two before we're serious contenders on a national scale.

And he's just a freshman

ACC Champs!!!

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

That's 2 and it's only March.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Ok, we already know that SAM ROGERS is legendary, but is anyone here getting a similar vibe with Dev Carter?? Thoughts?
