Hokies in NFL 2024

As the offseason moves forward thought it was time to turn over to 2024.

Looks as if Commanders are moving on from Joey Slye as they signed Brandon McManus to a one year deal.

Hey man, he's never going to be a Pat Mahomes competing for Super Bowls. He might as well keep making that sweet, sweet NFL money.

Just googled his career earnings. 13 seasons 38 million total I salary and estimate earnings in the 70 million range.

I mean, sure it would have been nice for him to have the starting role longer in some of these spots, but that is a hell of a NFL career.

Meanwhile Kirk Cousins has somehow made over 350 million lifetime. Nuts.

NFL owners have lost trillions simply because they have no idea how to scout college QBs- none for the most part. They have for 2 decades ignored what it takes to be a sucessfull NFL QB far too often- 1. Accuracy, 2. Foot Work, 3. Quick Release, 4. Smart- Dwayne Haskins and Justin Fields have none of those. Lets draft them in the top 15. RG3 had none of those. The list goes on. Also there has never been a truly great NFL QB under 6'0- Brees is right at 6'0. But lets draft Bryce Young. They suck at it. Awful. That's why a meh guy like Cousins demands top dollar- because he simply doen't piss down his leg in games. He's not great by any stretch but they can't scout college QBs worth a shit, so here we are.

The biggest reason Cousins has made so much is he bet on himself over and over and delivered on those bets every time. Through the franchise tags with Washington to delivering over and over in Minnesota over all kinds of doubt. He is never going to be considered a superstar barring some Super Bowl runs but he has taken full advantage of opportunities.

A lot of that was Dan Snyder's stupidity but overall, agreed.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I laugh because I remembered when Cousins was taken in the fourth round after RG3 was taken in the first round. The owners wanted RG3, the coach wanted a real QB. We all know which one has passed the test of time and talent. As stated, Cousins has bet on himself again and again. He was also the first QB to get a fully guaranteed contract. It wasn't for the most money by far, but it was guaranteed. He also knows his own value. He also hasn't been greedy wanting a maximum value but a fair market value.

The Bears are going to draft Caleb Williams number 1 overall. Compare him to Brady - the toughest most competitive guy ever. Williams is more like Josh Rosen. Compare him to Mahomes- who was not the #1 overall pick in the draft. Mahomes has a release that rivals Marino and wants to beat his mom in football at every level. Williams wants an ownership stake before playing a down. If I can see it, they should be able to see it. Yeah he can make "all of the throws"- so can Kyle Boller. NFL GMs suck at drafting QBs

I think there are people who know how to scout QBs. The issue is that if you take Penix #1 and it doesn't work out you're fired. If you take Williams #1 and it doesn't work out, well who could have seen that? Everyone had him as number 1. Even if Williams isn't good enough to get on the field and Penix is really a good back up QB but not a franchise QB.

To go against the grain in sports is very tough because the status quo gets you very far even if you're not good.

EDIT:
The other thing to add is that you don't want to draft a 3rd round player in the first round, even if you have them as a HoFer. Because you can get a 1st rounder AND a HoFer. So if you need a QB and your scouts say the best guy is in the 2nd round, management is going to be pissed if you don't use a first round pick on a first round talent QB even if the scouts say differently. So I don't think it's a scouting issue as much as a owner/people issue.

So I don't think it's a scouting issue as much as a owner/people issue.

" Everyone had him as number 1"- THIS is what they suck at. why do they have him #1? He can make highlight throws? Who cares. They had Manziel rated high too- under 6 ft, head case, can't sit in the pocket. They are fucking brilliant at scouting QBS I tell ya.

I wonder how that compares to the other Riley QBs

Pretty sure most of the NFL teams are going to rank up there with the best college teams.

Bro, the Kyle Boller shoutout had me rolling 🫢🏼

Go Hokies!

Mahomes has a release that rivals Marino and wants to beat his mom in football at every level.

Well, for me, I would definitely want a starting QB that could absolutely crush their mom in football. ;^)

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I'm a longtime Bears fan and definitely agree with you on Williams. He's got all the signs of being a major bust. At least the Bears recognize that Fields isn't the answer.

Will

Will be a huge bust. He's soft. This is a man's league. I can see it a mile away. Bust city.

But is he a Jamarcus Russell size bust.

Nobody is - Russell's in a bust category all by himself.

I don't know, I kind of feel like Ryan Leaf would be in or at least near the same category.

Art Schlichter and Jim Druckenmiller are definitely in the running at QB.

Jim is only considered the 11th biggest bust back several years ago.

He was the 26th pick in the draft, barely a first rounder. There's plenty of quarterbacks picked earlier than that who had just as bad a career as Druckenmiller.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

What San Francisco did to Jim was criminal. They tried to turn him into Steve Young and forced him to lose so much weight

No- for only 1 reason - with the guaranteed money, 365 day NFL media coverage, etc. He will get more chances than Russell got. So he may get some run as a back up before he is out of the league, simply because times have changed.

Russell had other issues that kept him from being picked up by other teams.

Resigned
An adjective that means to feel or show acceptance that something unpleasant or unwanted will happen or cannot be changed. For example, "She was resigned to a long visit with his mother". "Resigned" can also mean to quit or retire from a position. For example, "An employee resigned".

A transitive verb that means to sign again, especially to rehire someone, such as an athlete, by means of a signed contract. It can also mean to renew or extend a contract. For example, "An employee re-signed".

It's really cool to see him thriving in the league.

Herbert scored a TD last night for Bears but really don't understand what they are doing with him. So far through two games, he has FOUR total carries. In the prior three seasons, he was averaging about ten carries a game. Looks like they have made D'Andre Swift their "featured" back. Go Hokies!!

Probably 6-8 weeks after they trade him.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Conner came up big again for Chiefs. Led them in tackles and had an interception that set up a FG.

Bears O line continues to be putrid. As a team they averaged 2.3 ypc on 23 attempts. Herbert doubled his season carry total with 4 yesterday but only got 9 yards.

Blackshear had 58 kick/Punt return yards for Carolina.

Chuck Clark had 7 tackles, a sack and a Fumble recovery for the Jets on Thursday.

Tim Settle had two sacks for the Texans.

Did the 49ers cut Logan Thomas again? Still see profiles with him on the team but the sites that show Hokies in NFL don't list him and several of those sites show Practice Squad/IR/PUP list guys.

Interesting (in a not-good way) blurb about Nick Sorensen from the Athletic.

What Dianna's Hearing: The 49ers' other problem

Slow starts are nothing new for Kyle Shanahan's group β€” they opened 3-4 two seasons ago, and 2-4 the year before that, and played in the NFC title game both years. Opponents are noticing something a little different about this year's 49ers though, and it doesn't have anything to do with the Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams holdouts or the Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel injuries.

As a Rams coach told me after L.A. came back and stole a game from the 49ers at SoFi Stadium on Sunday: This isn't Brock Purdy's fault β€” the 49ers' defense is not the same.

While the focus was on the offense's holdouts and injuries this summer, the 49ers were quietly breaking in another new defensive coordinator, Nick Sorensen, promoted after the team parted ways with Steve Wilks after one season.

At least so far, getting off the field has been an issue. Through three weeks, San Francisco has the third-worst third-down defense in football, allowing a 52.9 percent conversion rate. Over Kyle Shanahan's first seven seasons, that defense allowed opponents to convert just 39 percent of their third downs.

Back to you, Jacob.

Joey Slye set the New England franchise record with a 63 yd FG today! Always had a hell of a leg.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

The 50 yard field goal is the new 30 yard field goal. You have to wonder when they will decide to narrow the goal posts. Feels like it will be coming at some point with all of these long field goals being made on a regular basis.

Yep- more noticable than ever. NFL dudes kick 60 yarders like nothing now. Remember there is different "air" in the balls used for kicking in the NFL. Maybe they will just go bac to regular air?

I propose: No FGs allowed under 40 yards. That leaves you scrambling to get a 1st Down, or giving the ball back on the 30 like a kick off basically does.

To be fair to Herbert, the Bungles fumbled four times last night. Their starting running back actually lost his fumble. Herbert recovered his own miscue.

Bungles managed a whopping 49 yards rushing. Pretty much why I thought Herbert going there was unfortunate. Their lead back, Chase Brown has 521 yards rushing in TEN games. 52 average is peanuts.

Can't put the ball on the ground in that league. Running backs are like kickers- find a new one.

Their primary back has had six fumbles but stats only show two because the other four went out of bounds. He has been working with Burrows for two years. If you watched the Herbert fumble you will see it was an RPO with Burrows and it looks as if Burrows tries to pull it as the ball pops out in front and Herbert jumped on it as soon as it happened. He had three practices with Burrows before the game.
