Well, it's an interception fest.
It's looked like any time the linebackers get close to the line of scrimmage, they're getting taken out of the play, even if they aren't actually blocked.

The Spring game always confuses the heck out of me. Has Burgos improved this much or has the OL regressed? Either way, I'm just glad to see a healthy Ali Jennings and Hokie Football.

Jennings has hauled in a few nice passes from Pop. Looks great and full strength. Also Pop looks like he has full command of the offense, feeling good about him too. He sure is elusive.

The run blocking is a lot better than the pass blocking. Pass blocking is awful. Clements is getting abused on several plays. He's not getting his body into the path and is reaching to try to make any sort of contact. Watched him get totally lost on a spin move.
As I type this, he has a decent play right at the end of the quarter. But, he just doesn't seem to be where he needs to be to make the blocks.

Cunningham is an upgrade at either spot on the right side. He's definitely looking better than Schick and Clements.
Edit to add to this. Several times, I saw Cunningham making reaches similar to Clements. He's got a pretty decent wingspan. The difference is that he was making the reach while moving the right direction. So, he's slowing them with the reach and getting his body where it needs to be. Clements is just making a reach and saying Ole as the defender bulls their way through.

I have decided that for me, the spring game is simply a great promotion of our program and no overreaction is needed based on the state of play, and that we are gonna be fuckin awesome next year.
So it is, so it shall be!

Overall, will say it looks like the team has put on some good size, and there is a ton of athleticism and speed everywhere. Think we finally have the talent level way back up.

Really excited for this season, the team passes the eyeball test. We have a ton of speed and size. Skill positions are an embarrassment of riches, just so deep. Feel pretty good about most positions. Wouldn't mind us grabbing a good tackle in the portal if we can. But feeling very good about this team. Sure seemed like a great atmosphere and a lot of momentum.

Hard to take too much away from the spring game really or make much of stats, but just visually the athleticism and depth at many spots jumped out. A lot of work to do still in camp, but I think the talent is there for this team to have a very good season this year.

As important as the 150 recruits being there, as much or more important was the buy in of Alumni players being there. Seen mentions of 100 or more Alumni players were in attendance. Not too long ago that would not have been the case. Recruits seeing NFL and former NFL guys walking around helps tremendously on setting the environment.

I'm like 90% certain even Marcus was there with a sideline pass today (yes that Marcus)....pry pulling out all the stops these days. It's a shame we didn't have this all in place starting in 2016.

This. We needed a total foundational overhaul of the football program back in 2016. I think so many around the program simply thought get a young offensive minded head coach to pair with Bud and we're back in business. But the game and landscape had started shifting rapidly, and the Beamer way of doing things needed a major overhaul and modernization. VT had fallen behind. Fu wasn't up to that and I don't think Whit really was too. We couldn't just plug a new guy into the old Beamer system.
Give Pry a ton of credit - I think he has gotten the admin to fully buy in, and he knows how big time football should operate having been under Franklin for so long at PSU. He's really building something awesome at VT and the momentum is palpable. 100+ former lettermen on campus, 150+ recruits, major NIL efforts, great support staff. On and on, and the talent level finally is starting to look like a competitive program.

Is Da'Quan Felton injured or is there another reason he didn't play today? Maybe I missed him, but watched the first three quarters and missed him off he was playing.
Edit: after watching the condensed game, I saw him a few times like you all mentioned below. Thanks!

I don't put a lot of stock into team play at the sliding game because everyone is mixed around and starters leave early. There were a number of guys making plays that you can see they want to play, prioleau was one of them. It's great to see those that take that step. Lots of things to be excited about as long as we don't have to throw in high winds games this season.

Did they mix up the OLine groups? Didn't seem like 1s and 2s to me. Also, run blocking looked way ahead of pass blocking, which is weird because it was flipped to start last season, right?

This. I also saw where some were making a big deal of the official 13 or whatever sacks there were, but 1) it's the spring game and they were blowing the play dead if anyone remotely breathed near the QB, and 2) there were a few coverage sacks where Pop held on too long because coverage was good downfield (and he really knew he couldn't run because it would just be a sack). RT remains the biggest concern on the line for me, but I thought there was some definite good to take away from the run blocking.

I thought the Mason kid at RB was Tuten when I first turned the game on. He looks the part. Even Pry said "oh, nice run" on one of them. I'll say it again: if App State recruits a running back, we should try to steal him.

Go out and support Lacrosse and Softball if even for a little bit.
Lacrosse is at noon. It's Senior Day for 17 Seniors. They play #1 Notre Dame. They are doing the Senior ceremony at 1020 am.
Softball is 2pm against Boston College.
Well, it's an interception fest.
It's looked like any time the linebackers get close to the line of scrimmage, they're getting taken out of the play, even if they aren't actually blocked.
Interesting first couple drives. Drones and Watson both with picks, Drones throwing deep into the wind for Greene/Bradshaw and Pop with a tipped ball.
Linebackers are still concerning... π¬
Very.
This. I didn't want to be overly negative about Brumfield, but I also am not convinced he is an upgrade.
Yep I don't think he is unfortunately. Need 2 talent upgrades at OL and at least 1 at LB for me to feel good about this team
Orange team run D is getting gashed, giving up huge runs and a huge TD to Prioleau. And Brumfield is the starting Mike on Orange so not encouraging.
Edit - and Coney just popped a huge run on the Maroon D. Run D still bad or OL making improvements?
The Spring game always confuses the heck out of me. Has Burgos improved this much or has the OL regressed? Either way, I'm just glad to see a healthy Ali Jennings and Hokie Football.

Right side of the orange line is rough. And it's last year's right side.
The run blocking is a lot better than the pass blocking. Pass blocking is awful. Clements is getting abused on several plays. He's not getting his body into the path and is reaching to try to make any sort of contact. Watched him get totally lost on a spin move.

Agree. I think this may be it for Clements. He has really struggled.
I don't know how he will be in regular season play, but PJ is certainly making the case for us having a deeper RB room than we thought.
Orange defense is yikes
It's loaded with starters too at least on the line
TBF I think most of the presumed starters were out after the first drive. Looking back it seems like many of them didn't stay in long.
Man PJ Prioleau putting on a show today. Drones looks in full command of the offense too.
I have decided that for me, the spring game is simply a great promotion of our program and no overreaction is needed based on the state of play, and that we are gonna be fuckin awesome next year.

150 recruits at the game. I'm really starting to believe Pry understands how to recruit.
We are playing big boy football/recruiting now. Love it.
More recruits at VT spring game than fans at LOLUVA spring festival
No more guys getting banged up please. And hold on to the ball!
Feeling a lot better about backup QB. Feel like Pop has full grasp of the offense and has made some really good throws.
How many times are they going to say Montel Fines?
Nice interview with Megan Duffy just after halftime. Didn't reveal too much but she sounds excited to be here and ready to get to work.

Boy I didn't watch the game at all but this is not what I got out of reading this entire thread lol

Now that every player on the roster is a recruit every offseason, having current and former pros around probably helps in that regard too.
I'm like 90% certain even Marcus was there with a sideline pass today (yes that Marcus)....pry pulling out all the stops these days. It's a shame we didn't have this all in place starting in 2016.
Yeah Dwight posted a picture with Mike and Marcus you know we're all in when we're brining Marcus back.

OL still rightfully the biggest concern. Clements and Schick should be nowhere near the first team. I still think we need 2 OL and an LB in the portal
We're undefeated!!!
No sources and honestly just curious.

I saw him early. Was on the ground after some attempted blocking. Don't know how he got there.
Rewatched the first quarter and he played, think the halfback pass was thrown at him to start the game

From the OL play that I saw, we won't. High winds will mean run with RBs, run with options, run with QB, run with screens, run with jet sweeps.
Did they mix up the OLine groups? Didn't seem like 1s and 2s to me. Also, run blocking looked way ahead of pass blocking, which is weird because it was flipped to start last season, right?
They mixed the OL up. Run blocking may be ahead right now because the staff wants to run the dang ball and made it a point of emphasis this spring.

Hokie Sports reports ESPN says Drones is one of the most interesting QBs to watch this fall.
