WBB hosts Miami Jan 1 at 6 PM

The 11-3, 1-1 Ladies host the 9-4, 1-1 Miami Hurricanes at 6 PM today on ACCNX. Jason Patterson will do play by play; Liz Kitley is the analyst. Tamara Brown will wander around and add comments occassionally.

Miami has 4 losses, all to ranked or receiving votes teams. Two of the losses were at neutral sites: current #14 Iowa in Orlando and current receiving votes Ok. State in the Caymans. The other two losses were to #11 Kentucky and receiving votes NC State at home. They beat Wake Forest in their only true road game. We do not have any common opponents so far this season.

Miami is relatively tall with 6'6" Grad Ra Shaya Kyle #0 at center and 6'3" Freshman Natalie Wetzel #12 at forward. The other three likely starters are #33 5'8" Junior Amarachi Kimpson, #5 5'6" sophomore Ahnay Adams and #14 5'9" Sophomore Gal Raviv; #15 5'9" Junior Vittoria Blasigh may start in place of Raviv. Miami is a young team with one grad student, one redshirt senior and three juniors with five true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, two true sophomores and two redshirt sophomores on the roster.

Three of the starters average double digit scoring led by Kyle at 15.5 ppg. She also averages 10 rebounds per game. I guess being 6'6" has some advantages. Miami shoots 45% overall, but only 28.5% from beyond the arc. Only #15 Vittoria Blasigh (42.6%), #23 Meredith Tippner (44.4%) and #22 Simone Pelish (53.8%) shoot better than 30% from three. So probably only one threat from deep on the floor during most of the game. The Hurricanes will attempt 21 shots and make 6 on average from three.

Miami has outrebounded their opponents by 7 per game. They average 13.6 turnovers and 13.3 assists per game. The starters will probably play about 30 minutes each; but ten players have played in at least 10 games.

The teams look to be evenly matched. ESPNs matchup predictor says Hokies 72.3%. I think one of the taller freshmen Jenkins or Trent will have to play significant minutes against Kyle. This should be a winnable game if we are not ice cold shooting and don't get too careless with the ball.

LET'S GO HOKIES!

LET'S GO...

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

HOKIES!!!

Hopefully, Santa brought Wenzel her shooting stroke.

Go Hokies!!

Hopefully Wenzel comes in and goes off, dispelling the rumor she quit on the team.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

That was ridiculous she even felt the need to respond to that troll.

Early in the game, looks like Carleigh brought her shot back from Texas with her.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

3 for 3... and 2 of them are 3ptrs.

33-19 HOKIES at the half.

51-39 HOKIES end of third

Yeah, turnovers galore and lazy defense leading to a lot of fouls and and-1s for Miami

#0 for Miami must major in Theater/Drama

Managed to blow an 18 point second half lead

From 49-31 to 60-60.

Have to clean up the turnovers in the OT. We lost the lead by not getting shots in the fourth quarter.

This is embarrassing. Get them down to 2.9 seconds on shot clock and allow sideline inbounds pass to two feet from basket for like 4th time in this game

I hate to even say it but CMD needs a decent end to the year, or else (right or wrong) there's gonna be some hot seat talk. I know its only year two but it feels like next year there needs to be a real turn-the-corner result

She has to recruit some bigs. So far its all speed and shooters outside maybe Trent. Freelon isn't physical enough to be effective against most of the ACC

IMHO we got to playing "not to lose" instead of keeping our foot on their throats. Too many turnovers and too much reliance on the three. But give credit where credit is due... the Kyle girl for miami did have a really good game. She is legit.

She definitely is when they let her use the chicken wing hook, no defender is going to be able to counter that. The officials were consistent on letting it go both ways but she was the one using it effectively. Freelon and Trent either wouldn't or couldn't on our end.

I agree on the chicken wing. But it seems I've seen that a lot this year in both the women's and men's games and it not being called.

It was a point of emphasis two seasons ago and needs to be again. It just gives way too much advantage letting it go

Yep Strack and Hassett tearing stuff up. Strack on verge of double-double average at 16.8/9.9. Just took down the Human Lady Peacock and #5 LSU. Five players in double-digits.
