WBB Hosts LOLUVA Feb 1 at 2 PM

Your 17-5, 7-3 Hokies host the 15-6, 7-3 UVA Wahoos in the WBB portion of the Commonwealth Clash today at 2 PM. This game will be an ACCNx broadcast to make room on the ACC Network for 4-19, 0-10 BC vs 9-13, 4-6 Ga Tech. PxP James Patterson, Analyst Mack McCarthy, Sideline nuisance Tamara Brown. VT Sports Network will have Evan Hughes and Liz Kitley. ESPN Matchup Predictor says 58.2% Hokies, which, I guess, basically means home court advantage.

The Hokies and the Cavs have essentially the same record. Their bad loss is to UMBC; our worst loss is to JMU. We both handled Radford easily. We beat Syracuse and they lost to the Orange. We both beat Pitt and WF; but they took three overtimes to beat Wake and we won by 18. We both beat Florida State and Clemson.

UVA is an experienced team. There are only one freshman and two sophomores on the team; but they do play about 13-15 minutes per game. The probable starting five includes two grad students, two seniors and a junior. They are led by #21 5' 7" junior guard Kymora Johnson. The two seniors are #1 5' 8" senior guard Paris Clark and #7 6' 4" senior forward Tabitha Amanze. The two grad students are #23 6' 3" guard(? that's what it says on their website) Romi Levy and #4 5' 11" guard Jillian Brown. The first two off the bench are #12 6' 4" senior forward Caitlin Weimar and #5 6' 2" redshirt junior Sa'Myah Smith.

Scoring is led by Johnson at 18.8 (43.7% overall, 37.9% from three and 85.7% from the line) and Amanze 10.5 ppg (50.3%, 0%, 73.4%). Next is Clark 8.7 ppg (39.2%, 35.9%, 69.0%), followed by Levy 8 ppg (50.8, 34.0, 78.6) and Brown 4 ppg (33.7, 33.9, 87.5). Off the bench Smith and Weimar contribute 9 and 8.3 ppg. Smith leads in rebounding with 7.2 per game, followed by Amanze at 6.8 and Weimar at 6.1. Amanze 1.6 blocks per game and Weimar 1.4 per game are true rim protectors. The Cavaliers have won the rebounding battle by 13 rebounds per game this season. Johnson leads the team with 6.5 assists per game; and overall UVA has 19.4 assists to 14.6 turnovers per game.

As a team the Cavs shoot 46% overall and 33.2% from beyond the arc. They will attempt 21 threes per game and make 7. Of the starters only Amanze is no threat to shoot from deep; the other four average 33-38% from three and attempt at least two per game. Johnson leads the charge with 8 attempts and 3 makes per game. The Cavs are aggressive on defense averaging almost 8 blocks and 8.7 steals per game. This is not the game for lazy passes and casual ball handling; Johnson has quick hands. The Hokies will be at a significant height disadvantage down low unless Trent or Jenkins is on the court. Freelon MUST stay out of foul trouble in this one. Carleigh and Carys need to shoot well today or this is going to be a challenging game.

LET'S GO HOKIES!

HOKIES!!!!!

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Definitely need to shoot better than they did against Pitt, and we can't afford an entire quarter where we can't throw it in the ocean. Hoping they find the rhythm they had against Wake last weekend.

Game not loading for me on accnx through ESPN on firestick. Anybody else?

Finally loaded.

I dont understand how Wenzel is so absolutely terrible at layups. Its infuriating especially when she then misses both free throws

Maybe this will be our bad quarter. Atrocious shooting. So many open looks that didn't go down capped off by Wenzel missing two free throws.

Both teams 5 for 18 shooting in the first. I hope we settle down before they do.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Holy F Wenzel ...make a free throw

There it is again....whistle only because she went to the floor well after the shot.

Two great plays by Petersen! Layup, followed by steal to assist on the next possession. Maybe breaking out of that slump

VB born, class of '14

Baker 0-7 or we would be in control.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Wenzel 3-8 doesn't help but my biggest issue with our offense is there is almost zero effort to get Freelon where she can score. Doesnt help she only played 8 minutes but her, Trent and Petersen only had 4 shots in 21 minutes. I know UVA bigs are tough but still need them to be successful.

That was a weak foul on UVA's Johnson

Now they changed who the foul was on but left it a shooting foul. She was only one near Nelson on the foul.

Yeah I can't rewind it on Spectrum, but I can't figure out how it's a shooting foul if it's not on Johnson. I think we need to keep going at her on defense to try to get her into foul trouble

That should been an and 1 on that crazy shot that went in.

Wenzel misses another FT. Don't understand her taking a Tech Free Throw. So many better FT shooters on the team

Definitely a charge. Freelon was set. Thats a three point swing

That ball was touched by Johnson out of bounds clearly on replay. Should have been Hokies ball

That Johnson three should have never happened. Clear moving screen.

Johnson gave Nelson a full extension arm shove but no call. Johnson should have fouled out already

the consistently poor level of officiating in women's college basketball is a travesty...and it has been that way for years

I caught parts of the game and logged on today just to comment on her near constant full arm shoves. I saw it multiple times. Just to echo what others have said on here, the officiating was atrocious - late whistles, incorrect attribution, and just a ton of head scratchers where they called a foul on someone just because the shooter fell down whether or not there was actual contact.

But kudos to the team for fighting through it and closing out strong!

Man if we lose this game, it will be the missed free throws

Yep. 20 of 30. Wenzel has missed 6.

That Nelson charge should have been a block. Nelson clearly shifted at the end

This is how you close out a team

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Twice now they have Freelon in transition but dont pass her the ball with no one between her and the basket. It worked out with Baker 3.

Gets it on second try...but then misses another. That screen that just showed our Margin of Victory would have been adding one to the 20+ margin if we could have hit free throws. 10+ is still in question now

congrats to the ladies!

For the true humor. LOLUVA prepared custom shirts with a Frederick Douglass quote on them for our game. They also misspelled his name...

Does anyone have a photo of this?

Was going to ask the same thing. I did some initial searching and UVA seems to have scrubbed any mention of the game except their X score update posts. YouTube doesn't have the full game up yet to go back and review. I figured we would get a shot of it on the condensed game.

Sounds like Coach Mox had a bit of a meltdown at her post game presser. Didn't like a question posed to her by Berman and went on a rant at him.

I actually checked Sabre and they want her gone!

Man NET Rankings not favorable to the ladies. Hokies were 42nd in NET prior to UVA. Beat UVA by double-digits who were 36th in NET. Hokies now only 41st and UVA is 38th. Hokies have better Quad 1, better Quad 2, the same Quad 3 and better Quad 4 record than UVA. Hokies have better home and away and the same neutral record. Hokies have better overall record than 8 of the teams ahead of them.

Seven ACC teams in front of them have worse ACC records. Hokies have victories over three of the seven.

Hokies a bit more favorable in Bart Torvik at 36th. The three ACC teams the Hokies beat but were behind in NET are behind Hokies in Bart Torvik.
Syracuse 39
Virginia 41
Clemson 43

That is quite odd. Beat ND on Thursday, split the next 4 after that, and I think it takes care of itself.

So like any poll there are shenanigans going on. Just looking at the numbers we should be much higher.

well VT got a quad 2 win and UVA had a quad 1 loss

Danny is always open

Wenzel was featured in a Top 5 in 5 on Basket Under Review. The shooting quote...woof

Carleigh Wenzel
Wenzel has seen an uptick in usage over the past few games, and it has been to the benefit of Virginia Tech. She just put up 23 points in a big rivalry win over Virginia, where she also added five assists and six rebounds. She hasn't scored under double digits since the Louisville game on January 4th and has seemingly turned a corner since then. She has extremely high usage at times and has been shown to rise to the occasion when she is counted on. Her assist rate has climbed this year while her turnover rate has dropped. She is also shooting the ball at a 33.9 percent rate, which is the highest of her career. Virginia Tech has a few very nice pieces, but if they want to reach the NCAA tournament in a good spot to make a run at the second weekend, then Wenzel needs to be a huge factor down the stretch.

They must be factoring in her horrible free throw shooting. It felt like she was better on the floor last Sunday.

She really wasnt though. She shot 27.7% against UVA. 5 for 18 and that doesnt include misses where she was fouled. It was more like 5 for 28. Went 12 for 20 at the line.

In eleven conference games, Wenzel has made 24 out of 59 three point shots for .407 which is best on the team in conference games.

Life is good.

3s aren't her problem. Her problem is layups.

Yeah, on many of them she is a step or so too late on picking the dribble up and going to the hoop/board. So she ends up kind of having to shoot straight up/behind her. Or she has to slow down, which gives her defenders time to recover, interfere, or block her.
