Let's Go
HOKIES!!!
Eddie in the hole, Mat 6
Eddie with really fast takedown
Oklahoma scored the first bonus point with a MD in the prelims, as has Drexel
Seidel in the hole on 7
Eddie V time
Quick takedown
3-0
Thought he got two swipes but I guess not
Why isnt it 6-1?
Escape, but over a minute if RT
3-1
Escape 3-2, though another minute and a half RT
Eddie had a second takedown why isnt it scored?
No idea, but he had an escape to go up 4-2
Takedown 7-2
Escape 7-3
Takedown 7-6
Escape 8-6
Eddie advances 8-6, the no score takedown would not have been for bonus points.
Crook in the hole mat 6
The phrase "in the hole" makes me think that he is already wrestling and is down points. Do you mean he's up next?
Si
Seidel quick takedown
3-0
Near fall, then escape
7-2
Tech Fall Seidel
Let me rephrase
Tech Fall.... in the first period
Bonus points
Seidel is so nasty.
#10 @ 125 from Princeton is going to be a tough out for someone.
I should have kept this to myself...
Crook in the hole on Mat 6. I'm nervous.
No real upsets in the 125, and I don't expect Lilledahl to lose.
Crook is in
Vombaur takedown followed by escape
1-3
Vombaur takedown 1-6 end of the 1st
Escape, takedown
2-9
Vombaur escape
2-10
Takedown and RT makes it 2-14
I gotta say I really love the running play-by-play you guys do during matches. I know its probably a pain to switch back and forth to post updates, so I hope you know, it is MUCH APPRECIATED!!
It is hard to watch Crook. He isn't meant to be at 141.
Yeah he's been hard to watch all year it feels like
We'll be better next year
That was ugly but not surprising
No. Vombaur won earlier this year 5-4.
Yeah but Crook hasnt looked the same since mid-January.
For a guy to dominate his weight class in high school the way he did and then be meh in college is somewhat surprising. Although I don't know much about high school wrestling in Florida.
Some surprises in 133
#20 Farber took down#13 Van Dee, his reward is Seidel
#19 Walker beat #14 Berginc
#23 Brown best #10 Leete
Gaj is in the hole mat 2
Don't understand the Cornell guy taking in Porter from UVA strategy. He was clearly dominating but kept chasing riding time rather than going for a major or tech fall
Jax Forrest is a monster. Gets the fall but he turned two times his opponent had his leg into back points.
Seidel is very good, better than I expected even....but it feels like 33 is Forrest and Blaze race with Seidel and Davino battling for 3rd
Blaze and Davino went head to head twice and both were Ride Out finishes. They split so definitely not a guarantee. Jax and Seidel came down to a table review for back points. Seidel is only one to take Jax down more than once
Takedown Gaj
3-0
Gaj 9-4. 3 mins riding time.
Felt like a missed bonus point opportunity
Yeah he gave up the takedown to easy late in the 3rd. Looked a little lazy.
Bypassed the escape chance to start the 3rd too.
Miller in the hole on Mat 4
Oopsie
Miller up now on 4
Scoreless after 1st
Miller Rideout for entire 2nd but opts neutral in 3rd
Miller wins 1-0 on Riding Time
Wonder how much more this event could make if they allowed ESPN commercial breaks between weights. I like the no commercials but everything about money now so made me wonder
Plenty of commercials on the espn2 broadcast
Ahh ok, I am watching ESPN+ and nothing
Penn State already with a 9 point lead over Hokies from 1st to 10th.
13.5 vs 4.5
They are getting so many bonus points
Pretty much every match. Its why they may outscore #2 by more than #2 outscores #15.
Recently saw NIL numbers.
PSU can pay 1st and 2nd team as much as Hokies pay 1st team
Church up on Mat 6
1-1 in 3rd. Church Blood Time
2nd stoppage for blood time
Going to SV
Going to Ride Outs
Church down first
Church escape in 6 seconds
Brick about lock hands
No idea why Hokies didnt brick there. Church second leg was off the mat so should have been return to center
I'm lost on that. Honestly a little mad.
Church gave up a final second loss in ot wow
How did church give that up
Desiante on Mat 8

Trail 6-3 after takedown
6-4 after escape
Desiante down in 3rd

Another takedown loses 12-6 going for Flying Squirrel
Bullock on deck on Mat 1
#6 Singleton (NC St) and #27 Carrigan (UNC) headed to Ride Outs
UNC brick in Ride Out but review confirmed results
Singleton won 2-1 and then said something to the UNC coaches that set them off
Bullock gives up takedown. Gets reversal on restart.
3-2
Give up a reversal
5-2
Escape 5-3
On top in 2nd

Sasso on top in 2nd
Escape 6-3 RT over a minute
Takedown makes it 6-6
Escape 7-6 but under 1 min RT
Gave up another takedown
9-7
Sasso down in 3rd
Escape 9-8
Loses 12-8
All goes back to cutting him on first takedown instead of riding. Changed the whole dynamic
Of course a hokie would be first 4 seed to lose
Being a Hokie is the hardest thing I have committed to doing in life.
Not even on the Team score list now since we are outside Top 10
Mullen up on Mat 5
Mullen takedown
Escape 3-1
Takedown as time expired
6-1
Start neutral in 2nd
Mullen Takedown
9-1 rode out 2nd
Starting 3rd neutral
Takedown Mullen 12-2 after cut him
Stall 13-2 but gives up takedown and 4 back points
Wins 14-9 but blows a bonus point
Thats it for first round. Team goes 6-4
Round 2
Eddie V already in and up 5-2 after 2
almost two and a half of RT for Eddie
Eddie hit with a second caution and a stall warning
Eddie wins, moves on to the quarterfinals
Seidel already up 6-1
6-1 after 1
Already another takedown and escape
9-2
Another takedown
12-2
Escape 12-3
Stall warning on Farber
ANOTHER takedown
15-3
Escape and Takedown and nearfall
TECH FALL SEIDEL 22-4
Dude is a bonus point machine
Near Fall for the Tech Fall
He is nasty nasty
39-6 in the first two rounds
He's averaging a 16 point win
So good we need one of him at every weight class
Crook and Gaj both in the hole. Mats 1 and 5, respectively
Crook goes in first.
7 seconds in, already down 0-3
Hard fought, but Crook ends his season with a 7-8 loss
Gaj drops his round 2 match 1-3
Miller in the hole, Mat 4
Watching Duke from PSU is unreal. 15-4 after 1 minute.
Gets an 18-5 pin in a minute and a half
Oof Miller taken down almost immediately
Miller just cant seem to do anything
Not sure how his opponent wasnt hit with a stall there. Miller was standing for almost 15 seconds
Miller on top in 2nd
Ref immediately starts counting Miller when opponent stood up
4-0 with almost 3 min RT against
Miller opts Neutral in 3rd. Still 4-0
Opponent hit with something
4-1
Miller loses 5-1
Going to be tough to even finish top 10 as a team at this point
Just have to remember this was a "not trying" year
Church up on Mat 7
Scoreless after first.
Church on top in 2nd
Escape 1-0
Gives up takedown, trails 4-0
Going to 3rd. Church down
Escape 4-1
Loses 4-1
Only took 3 shots all match. That was awful
Desiante going to be on Mat 1
Bullock going to be on Mat 6
Bullock up
Gives up takedown, escape
3-1
Second takedown
Trails 6-1 after 1st
Bullock on top in 2nd
Escape 7-1
Awarded his opponent another point, not sure what for
8-1
Going to third, no offense from Bullock at all
Some kind of argument between refs and table before 3rd
Escape 8-2
Takedown. 11-2
Cut him and then a takedown
11-6
Escape 12-6
Loses 12-6
I'm glad this is considered a down year and our recruiting class is top 2.
Otherwise this would be depressing
Still depressing. Guys have looked terrible
Desiante up on Mat 1
Looks to be up 3-1 going into the 2nd
3-2 after escape
Going to 3rd Desiante down to start
Escape 4-2. Desiante has almost 2 min RT
Desiante wins 5-2
Ridiculously long Table Initiated Official Review in match after Desiante
Took like 5 minutes looking for locked hands that wasnt called on mat
PSU up 40.5 to 24 on Iowa and Oklahoma State
24 points to 12.5 points separating #2 to #11
Mullen up on Mat 4
Trails 3-1
6-1 now
Escape 6-2
Takedown 9-2
Mullen on top in 2nd
Escape 10-2
Another point and then takedown
Trails 14-2
14-3
Takedown 17-3
17-4
Loses by Tech Fall 20-4
Bastida was always going to be an ugly bout
No surprise considering Bastida was already 6 years old when Mullen was born.
Dude's old enough to rent a car without getting a "young renter fee" added on.
Bastida was born in the 90s.
Sasso on Mat 1 next
Gets taken down right away
Escape 3-1
Takedown 4-3
Escape 4-4
Takedown trails 7-4
Escape 7-5
On top in 2nd
Escape 8-5
Sasso cradles him for pin
Excellent! A round late, but love seeing him winning by pin.
Catka has won twice for Rutgers as a 27 seed.
Yep was watching his second match
One more and he is an AA
Hokies end the first night in a 3 way tie for 9th with 14 points.
PSU 40.5
Nebraska 27
Iowa 25.5
Oklahoma State 25
Ohio State 23
Iowa St 21.5
Arizona 17
Stanford 15
Cornell/Michigan/Virginia Tech 14
Thank you all very much for keeping those of us who are unable to watch up to date!
I'm not sure where we were expected to finish, but I was hoping for a top 10 team finish.
When tech is having a good year, we should hope for a podium finish but be ok in just missing out.
Despite putting a wrestler in all 10 classes, this was not supposed to be a good year.
Top 10 was a perfectly reasonable goal for this year's squad

Hats off to Gaj 8 matches in 48 hours earning AA and 5th place as a true freshman
Seidel with a smart tough 5-0 win over PSU Blaze !
Round 2 is slated to start in about an hour and a half.
Still alive in the Championship Brackets are 125 - Eddie V and 133 - Seidel. One win from each of them in this round guarantees All American status.
Ventresca will be wrestling Princeton's Marc-Anthony McGowan, the 10 seed who got this far by upsetting Stanford's Nico Provo 4-2, who Eddie beat in tiebreakers in the ACC championships. A win and Ventresca would move into the semis against the winner of Indiana's Jacob Moran or Minnesota's Jore Volk. Volk beat Ventresca with an SV during the dual matchup.
Seidel opens today with Kyler Larkin of Arizona State, who advanced with a Fall yesterday of Penn's Evan Mougalian and shutout MD of Iowa State's Garrett Grice. A win, and he will face the winner of Northern Iowa's Markel Baker or top seeded Jax Forrest of Oklahoma State, who, like Seidel, has bonus-pointed both of his bouts yesterday.
Still alive in the Consolation Bracket are 149 - Gaj, 157 - Miller, 174 - Desiante, 184 - Bullock, 197 - Sasso, and 285 - Mullen
Only 141 - Crook and 165 - Church have been eliminated.
Gaj opens with Arkansas Little Rock's Brock Herman who advanced with a 7 point win over the 30-seed following a 1-3 loss to the 14-seed. A win would put Gaj up against the winnder of Cal Poly's Andre Gonzales or NC State's Koy Buesgens, who Gaj defeated in tiebreakers back in the ACC championship.
Miller has Indiana's Bryce Lowery, who advanced by Falling #13 Derek Ralke of Ohio. A win and Miller will take on the winner of Penn's Jude Swisher and Vinny Zerban of Iowa State.
Desiante's day starts with 10-seed Myles Takats of Bucknell who is coming in after getting falled. It'll be tough, but if Desiante can pull out the win, he will take on the winner of Cornell's Simon Ruiz and Northern Iowas Jared Simma.
Bullock opens with Northern Iowa's Nick Fox who knocked out Iowa State's Isaac Dean last night. The winner will take on the winner of Oklahoma State's Zack Ryder and Stanford's Abraham Wojcikiwicz (who Bullock MD'ed in the semifinals of the ACC tournament)
Sasso will begin with Ohio's Zayne Lehman who dropped a 1-7 decision to the #3 seed. The winner will take on the winner of Oregon State's Justin Rademacher and Ohio State's Luke Geog.
And in the heavyweights, Mullen will start with Wyoming's Christian Carroll. A win and he'd be up against the winner of Appalachian State's Stephan Monchery and Penn State's Cole Mirasola.
Seidel opens on deck on Mat 4, while Ventrasca opens in on mat 6.
A good opening part of the day for the Hokies will move them up in the rankings as the current #7 has only 5 remaining wrestlers, as does two of the teams tied for 9th.
Penn State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, and Ohio State all have their entire stable still alive.
Around the ACC:
Stanford sits at #8 with 3 in the Champs and 5 in Consolations
NC State is tied for 16th with 2 in Champs and 4 in Consolations, 1 Eliminated
Pitt is 22nd with 7 in Consolations, 1 Eliminated
UNC is tied for 30th with 1 in Champs and 3 in Consolations, 2 Eliminated
Duke is tied for 51st with 1 in Consolations
UVA is tied for 61st with 1 in Consolations, 2 Eliminated
Ventresca lost in Ride Outs
Seidel up 8-1 table review just took 2 backpoints away
Seidel finishes 1st with 3 more back points
11-1 in second started neutral
Takedown
14-1. Almost 3 Min RT
2 more backpoints to finish off 16-1 Tech Fall
Seidel guaranteed AA status.
Hokies tied for 6th now with Iowa State.
Oklahoma St closed the gap with PSU a bit. 47.5 to 40.5
ALL AMERICAN AARON SEIDEL

He never had both Mullens legs
Mullen down 6-1 already
This review is ridiculous. They ruled green locked hands and now reversed that on second review

133: Seidel is in to the Semifinals vs Oklahoma State's Jax Forrest, the #1 seed. A win and he's in the Championship.
149: Gaj is up against NC State's Buesgens. a win and he takes on Cornell's Joy. Oh, and the entire 149 bracket is crazy. The final 4 are #1, #10, #11, and #20.

With 6 wrestlers left, the Hokies still have more remaining than Iowa State (4) and Michigan (5) ahead of them.
Virginia Tech currently leads the ACC in team points with 27.5, good for 8th.
Stanford is 9th with 27 points
NC State is tied for 10th with 22.5 points

North Carolina is tied for 38th with 4 points
Duke has been eliminated at 51st place with 1.5 points.

Only 3 hokies still Alive. And we only have 1 official All American
Need all three to AA to keep our streak of 3 each alive
Its going to be hard. Beating someone 5 times in your career is hard. And Joy is a tough out for Gaj. Hopefully Joy is a National championship or bust kind of mentality wrestler
The gap between 1 and 2 (39.5 points) is greater than the gap between 2 and us (38 points)

Takedown Forrest, 1-11
Escape 2-11
Takedown, Escape
3-14
Seidel is dropped to the Consolations 3-14
Seidel hit with locked hands
Couldn't finish any of his shots. That was tough to watch.
What just went against either Ohio St or Penn St? Only way there was that much booing all at once. Had to be Davino/Blaze match
Gaj warned with stalling
No score after 1
Gaj defers
Joy takes bottom
Escape by Joy
0-1
End 2, down 1, going neutral
Takedown Gaj
3-1
NEAR FALL and escape
7-2
ALL AMERICAN GAJ
Gaj locks in AA
Hokies get 2 All Americans
True freshman all Americans at that
And Guess what. Another loss he avenged from the Cliff Kleen invitational. Joy beat him 5-1
Gaj with a 8-5 win to advance too the consolation semifinals
Seidel will start in mat 4.
Gaj on deck mat 4.
No idea how much I'll be able to post as I'm at a dog show today.
Worth it. 3 point class major and a 5 point grand major, and best of breed.
Seidel faces Ayala from Iowa
Gaj get a chance to avenge his loss against Lamar. I'm hoping SVN wore Lamar out.
We are now 3rd in ACC in team points. Possibly can pass NC State but Stanford is out of reach.
Sitting in 11th place with 35 points.
NC State in 10th with 37 points.
Stanford in 6th with 58 points. They definitely brought better attempts at NCAAs then ACCs.
1. PSU 153 points
2. OK St 111.5 points
3. Nebraska 90.5 points
4. Iowa 81 points
5. Ohio St 77.5 points
Top 5 are locked, just the order can change.
Shows just how far we have to go, even with our proposed lineup next year from 125-165, still a very steep incline ahead.
Domination by Seidel
Advances to bronze match 11-0
Gaj drops 2-4
Gaj beats Ryder Block of Iowa 4-0 and finishes 5th. Seidel beats Marcus Blaze of Penn State 5-0 to finish 3rd. Hokies are tenth in the team points with 41.5 points. They will finsh tenth if Trumble loses his NC match
FloWrestling had us still tied for 9th but apparently NCAA shows Minnesota with 44.5 now
Welp looks like FloWrestling missed something
The standford 149 wrestler just won a MATCH for the final. That was two grown men wrestling right there.
Trumble won dropping Hokies out of Top ten.
I can't say that I'm surprised by a sub top 10 finish
Eddie V and Sasso really hurt us. They lost us a project 25 team points
That would've put us in a close fight for 6th, which, all things considered, would have been exceeding expectations.
Regardless, an 11th place finish qualifies us for National Duals next year.

Virginia Tech Team Points 41.5, 11th NCAA, 3rd ACC
When I score the VT team points I reach 42.5 points, versus the 41.5 points shown on the Flowrestling website.
Are the match wins in the consolations for determining 3rd/4th place, 5th/6th place and 7th/8th place awarded 1/2 points each as for the earlier consolation matches? If not, that could be the difference in scoring for Seidel (1/2 pt.) and Gaj (1/2 pt.).
From the Oklahoma State wrestling website:
I corrected the points in the table I posted just above for Seidel and Gaj.
2 true freshmen scored 30 points of the 41.5 team points in the NCAA Wrestling Championships..

Interesting that 197 is pretty young and 285 is so old. I wonder how many of those guys will bump up in the future.
Decided to put all of Elko's information above into a table, for easier looks.
Instructions on how to make a table here.
I do wish I knew how to center justify the table cells, that would look much nicer.
Thanks for the improved table. Much easier to read.
Hayden Hidlay, assistant coach for most of the lighter weights at Stanford is leaving Stanford. Rumored to be headed to NC State. Potential transfer portal wave going to the Pack including possibly Aden Valencia, who took the 149 lbs title this year.
I think Iowa is going to throw the bag at Aden. Plus his sister is also a student at Iowa already
I still have no way of interpreting any of this, other than the 11th place finish. I'm guessing this was a bit of a disappointment for the team and not at all where we expected to finish, right?
If you only looked at Team Rankings while Duals were going on then yes. Intermat had the Hokies Projected 10th for Nationals though.
It wasnt a great result, especially Sasso losing first round as a 4 seed (although many thought his seeding was too high to begin with). Eddie losing also cost the Hokies a bunch of team points. Eddie's style is playing with fire because he seems to wrestle to win with one takedown in the entire match. Just takes one thing to go against him to cost him a match.
This season was never expected to be great but we finished behind NC State and Stanford, who also both had individual champions. Thats disappointing considering how ACC Championship went.
Its still the highest final placement nationally of any Hokies team this year I believe.

Interesting look at scoring at NCAAs. Point average by team. Shows how big the difference was with PSU scoring bonus points in matches. Hokies 12th with a 6 point average per match. Stanford finished #2 behind PSU with 7.795 point average.
