I like the term, "erasers". I hope by game 3, we see empirical evidence of a handful of erasers or erasers in the making.
Also love his confidence in our depth. What a treat that will be down the stretch of any season.
I also believe the most important intangible in competitive sports is a coach's ability to tap into the players' "inner warrior". I have experienced this first hand as a coach at the HS level. It is an absolute game changer.
This right here will be the difference between us either going 0-3 or 2-1 in that 3 game on the road stretch, as well as, our final record of his first season.
IMO, JMMF is the coach who is already tapping into that now and will show this coming season.
I did chuckle when urban recognized Bud and the coaching he did. Obviously I am biased, but that defensive performance is one of the best "you got out coached" that the Hokies have had in their favor.

Just went back and watched the condensed 2014 OSU game on youtube. Man, I forgot how fun that game was. That team had so much potential.
that team was so young too. we had ford, phillips, shai mckenzie and marshawn williams all playing meaningful roles as true freshman

True he was also a RS Freshman and played a lot that season. Just off the top of my head some other underclassmen contributors that year were Kendall Fuller, Greg stroman, sam rogers.
That team was loaded with young talent, just couldn't put it together well enough
I was convinced for about 6 whole days after that game that we could win the natty that year. Then we played East Caroline at home and things were clarified after that lol.

I've brought up a few times how the 2014 and 2015 teams were probably 9-3 type teams that through very significant one score game misfortune and injuries ended up 7-6. The 2016 season shouldn't have been seen as surprising. The entire core of key players were already on the roster, and Fuente, to his credit, added the final and key piece with Jerod Evans. That said, it's also why the collapse in 2018 should have been the moment we knew it wouldn't work with Fuente. As soon as he ran out of the very talented cupboard Beamer left him, the trajectory was clear. Even 2019 was more a case of Bud's swan song where he turned out an insane run of defensive performances through the mid to late season until the injuries piled up and we couldn't sustain it against UVA and Kentucky.
No doubt. That 2015 team went 7-6 despite losing our starting QB for half the year during the first game. I don't think we beat OSU a second time even if he doesn't get hurt, but I think he is good for at least 1 more win on his own.
I'll also say that I think the 2013 team was likely better than their 8-5 record. The defense was suffocating before Kyle fuller got hurt, and we then lost very close games to Duke and Maryland. We went and embarrassed Miami on the road as well that year. Definitely a 'what could have been' season for me, but I'm biased since I was still a student then
2013 Duke was the fluke loss of all fluke losses. That might be the worst stat line for a winning QB in a cfb game ever (non-triple option team) by the Duke QB.
I think the 2013 team was primarily an issue of extreme team imbalance. That team was 5th in FPI defensive efficiency, and 87th in FPI offensive efficiency. Brutal combo, and Logan Thomas was working with an all-time weak collection of skill position players we've ever put on the field.
Those last 4 years of Beamer coaching had a lot of season derailing injuries that if we had a couple difference bounces we'd have won a lot more games.
The Duke game is honestly still infuriating to think about (doesn't help that i was at that one). Plus if i recall correctly, if all else remained the same except we had won that game, then we'd have been in the ACCCG. Granted we would have gotten steamrolled by FSU, but i'm sure we still get the Orange Bowl instead of the sun bowl against UCLA.
Man I just looked up the stats and I forgot some of the insane parts of it. We held duke to 198 yards and lost. Doesn't feel real. They didn't convert a 3rd down the entire game (1-1 on 4th downs though)! And of course the real crazy stat - their QB went 7/25 with 4 picks and 0 TDs, with no completions in the entire 2nd half. Sigh.
That's another of what feels like many games we lost where we had stats that 90% or greater usually indicate the team won.
That would be an interesting deep dive into game stats...games in which the losing team leads in stats that predominantly result in a win.

That defense felt good enough to keep us in a game against anyone if the offense could do the bare minimum
Both that game and the Maryland game we should've won. It still annoys me too
I maintain that team finishes with 11 wins if Kyle Fuller stays healthy.
Looking back, I knew in my gut Fuente was cooked after 2018. I just didn't want to admit it for about another 12 months
