Yeah, that about sums it up. He said he now has LT as his #21 overall pick and said he could drop out of his top 25 if he has another "so-so performance". While I agree that Logan has played below expectations that we set after his breakout performances last year, I believe that he's going to get more comfortable as the season progress, just as he did last season (didn't really get the hang of it until about game 5... Hint hint)...
The experts are saying that Logan should return next season at this rate in order to improve his draft status. And I wholeheartedly agree, but not for his draft status. We're going to need him against Alabama beginning next season.

That's definitely a fair assessment
He's been atrocious so far this season. I don't buy the whole "comfort level" excuse. Yes, it took him a while to get going last year, but that's to be expected from someone who never started a game. I understand we're breaking in some new offensive schemes and it can't be expected to click right off the bat, but how much of his mistakes can be tied to the new system?
I'm kind of in between
I believe that he has to get comfortable to a degree with the new personnel around him and the lack of production from the running game thus far. On the other hand, his execution on throws should not be affected by that and all of the high balls he's thrown are clearly unacceptable.
But I believe he does turn it around soon. He's not going to be a Heisman contender or top 5 draft pick, but that's good for us. We'll have him next season.
To 5 Draft Pick? Are you
To 5 Draft Pick?
Are you insane! As much as I love our quarterback, he does not have anywhere near the arm to be ranked that high. If he gets into the NFL (fingers crossed!) it would be as a tight end or similar.
He said he's NOT going to be a top 5 pick - In reference to a couple media members having him as a top 5 pick in their preseason draft hype
Your correct. That will teach me to skim the comments.
I definitely agree fair assessment
The mechanics breakdown is what worries me. Seems like possibly the pressure has gotten to him, I think/hope he will start getting to feel comfortable and come into his own. I definitely think he needs another year and would benefit greatly from it.
Putting him as 1st Round Pick
was the mistake. Of course he was going to regress. What part of a new offense, with a new O-line, new RB, and a new WR set suggests that he'll be better than last year? The most disappointing aspect of LT3's game has been his mechanics, which I think are due to two reasons. One, he's thinking too much with new offense and two, he's trying to do too much without a running game to speak of. Once these get established, maybe we can expect the LT3 chuck-and-truck offense we loved in 2011.
Hype.
I agree. Our team and our players never play well when we have the hype going our way. For example, Jayron Hosley, as an unknown entry into our defense in 2010 had a great season, snagging 9 or 10 picks, including one off of the great Andrew Luck in the Orange Bowl, but then has a dismal following season.
Part of that stemmed from lack of throwing his way, part from his hamstring injury, but he also wasn't as much of a force in coverage when teams DID throw his way.
The problems that Logan has had this year will kill him with draft evaluators. His visual recognition is a big problem, and despite his athleticism, he moves slowly in the pocket. He has a quicker release than Tyrod, but it still is very slow by NFL standards. He would be a project, but the tools are there. Bare minimum, he should be a Byron Leftwich at his best type of QB, and there is no shame in that.
I think that his regression since spring ball is my biggest concern. His delivery right now is nothing like it was in spring ball (which was immediately after he worked with George Whitfield on spring break.) In spring ball, he had a very short wind up, ear to release. Now he is winding up, and his release his slow despite much more motion. Some throws, he looks like Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams" on his sloppy follow through where he fell all over the place.
Good News in a way
We will have him back next year...I also wonder how well he will do at the next level if he gets a shot. His deep throws have not been that good.
For that reason, he could jump
On the contrary, Logan might leave after this year b/c his draft stock is falling. Many believe that the longer he hangs at VT, the more damage he could do. I for one hopes he does stay, but if he's a projected 1st rounder, then let's hope Leal is game come next year.
300th Post: Woot.
Don't forget about Bucky Hodges... I'm not sure Leal has too much going for him except experience. We might be looking at a two quarterback system if Logan packs for the NFL.
Too much too soon
Dont get me wrong: I am high on Bucky Hodges. But it would be too much to ask of a true freshman to open his collegiate career against the Tide. We're going to be licking our wounds after this season, and we'll need all the experience and maturity we can get if we are to even stand in the same ring as Alabama. Logan gives us the best shot. If he's gone, Leal is a great option...even moreso than heralded Mr. Hodges. Leal is smart, plays within himself, knows the offense, and has a set of wheels. Many a friend in my circle are already calling for Leal to supplant Logan. I think that's blasphemy at this point...but the idea is clear: there isnt much drop-off from Logan to Leal. Bucky will--and should wait a full year before he "saddles up".
I agree
If Logan leaves, Leal is clearly the starter next year, and it's not even close. One of the real advantages of Logan staying (besides the obvious) is that it would allow Bucky to Redshirt (I would imagine). Logan stays, Leal is the backup, 3rd string is Gresh (or is he a senior?), Bucky redshirts. That then gives him 4 years of eligibility, with a year already under his belt in the system, if not any actual experience.
I always thought one of the biggest things JuJu ever did for us was to beat out Marcus Davis for the backup job to Tyrod. Let Marcus move to WR, which is certainly big for us at this point, and earned enough of the coaches' confidence to redshirt Logan. Also a huge plus for us. So he never won us any games directly, but was pretty important to the program in so many ways. Leal could be the same, even if he never does get the chance to start. I always have a soft spot for those guys. We have to remember, they work really hard too. /end of novel
There are plenty of people....
...who like Carlis Parker better than Bucky. Hodges has a very awkward motion, that will stuff will need to be relearned.
I think Gresh is a senior. Which brings up a new point. He's been the holder on special teams for as long as he's been in the program. Who steps up to take that position? And we shouldn't just gloss over that lightly, it's a serious job. I mean, if you were watching the Ravens/Browns game last night, there was a botched hold on an extra point that could have proved to cost the game.
they do work really hard
you hear about these guys during recruiting for years, then they ride the bench and never make a "visible" impact. Takes a lot of discipline and character to support your team in this way as opposed to transfering.
My God
Watching our offense is like watching that erectile dysfunction commercial... Just uncomfortable..
