One thing that I have learned so far this season is that VT fans are downright spoiled. 8 consecutive 10 win seasons, 4 ACC championships, countless bowl games. Most teams would kill for that. Winning has become woven into minds as an expectation. Now six games into the season we are 3-3 and still have a very reasonable chance to win the ACC and what do we do? We call for the firing of the winningest active coach in college football, we mope around like the world is ending, we talk about getting rid of enter sandman?!?! CMON PEOPLE! Did you really think that we would win 10 games every single year? I think that this is what we needed, instead of being appreciative for what we did accomplish we took it for granted and the very second we start to lose some games we throw fits like 3 year olds. The main point I'm trying to get across is so what if we are having a bad year it happens to everybody.
Also look at the bright side (LT comes back next year now, we have two running backs that will have significant experience by next year, DJ Coles now returns next year when we are sure to have a depleted receiving core, our recruiting class is GREAT)

"I think that this is what we needed"
I hope this is right, because I'm hoping losing like this brings a sincere change in attitude and a return to our true identity more than a change in the coaching staff. Watching our team lose sucks, but watching players compete seemingly without the heart, passion, and discipline of our teams from the late 90's is devastating. Beamer and Foster developed blue-collar teams with guys that were hungry to win and beat the living crap out their opponents for a full 60 minutes. I don't see that this year and I want it back.
I understand the calls for Beamer and/or Weaver to make staff changes, it's natural these days, and I think it'll pass. It's frustrating as heck to lose. But I think Beamer deserves the opportunity to walk away when he's ready, not before - and I believe he'll do that with integrity. The last 26 years demonstrates he won't let his ego become a thorn in the side of the program on his way out.
I'd like to see Beamer finish his career at VT by bringing us back to the foundation he started establishing in 1987. I'd like to see him pass to Foster, the keys to a team is the best in the country at taking care of the little things and plays with a passion to beat the other guy on every single play and then beat them to a pulp until the whistle blows. That's our team and I'll stand beside that team regardless of what the W/L column says. Maybe staff changes will happen, maybe they won't, but I believe Beamer will get it done.
sorry jim
foster will not be getting the keys to this car. have you seen that man in an interview, there is no way he will be a head coach
Still can win 10 or even 11
Have faith. Don't give up yet.
Win out
How epic would that be if we won out? Frank would probably win coach of the year for saving the season and we would all look ridiculous for even considering getting rid of him or anyone else from the staff.
But... I'm still mentally preparing for a loss to Duke this weekend.
i think we can do that
im preparing for the worst, but i think we can pull this together, make the acc title game and make a bcs game. and i honestly think we will beat either fsu or clemson in the regular season
Seems a little ambitious given the present state of things. Just sayin.
not saying it isnt
it is optimistic but being negative isnt going to help, and i know how our teams play down the stretch
It was just an observation, don't take it personally. I agree that we have the potential to beat either FSU or Clemson (most likely the latter) but I don't believe we beat the Atlantic champion in the ACCCG and go to the Orange Bowl. Seems like a stretch and I'll believe it when I see it.
wasnt taking it personally at all man
and i understand your point 100%, i dont really think it will happen but i think it can happen. the thing i actually think will happen is beating either fsu or clemson in the regular season. also wasnt saying you were being negative. more speaking about those who are all about the doom and gloom right now. and saying the season is a total loss
My bad, man. You know how difficult it is to get the tone of posts on the internet... Nearly impossible to be honest.
oh yea i agree
real damn hard to judge tone in text
I am not worried about our receiving staff next year at all.
We lose Cory, Marcus, and Dyrell. This is no comparison to what happened last year when we lost Jarrett and Danny. Next year we will have DJ Coles back, and as we've seen Demitri has stepped up too. Also we will likely play Joel Caleb coming in who I suspect will be huge. Marcus Davis is lazy and can't catch, and Dyrell is good, but not what we thought he could've been. The only player I truly feel like I am going to miss is Cory Fuller (who saw that coming?).
Don't forget Stanford and Asante
Both are capable receivers that will do well next year if our line gives Logan time to throw. Granted...that's a big if.
Dyrell is good?
Maybe in 2009. This year he's been downright turrible.
really
Marcus Davis is by far our best receiver and the biggest deep threat we have had since Eddie Royal.
ehh
Ok for the record... I want Beamer to stay as HC, never want to get rid of Enter Sandman, and eight 10 win seasons is impressive in any conference. Yes bad years do happen to every team, but...
I'm skeptical at Tech's ability to rebound off a bad year, if we do in fact end up having one. When top tier teams have bad years (Texas, Ohio St, Alabama for example) no one is doubting they will be down for very long and it is expected of them to come back and compete with the best teams. VT on the otherhand I think is a different story. They are on that next tier down right outside of the elite programs, even in their ACC prime they are still losing too many OOC games to inferior opponents or top 5 teams. It doesn't help that VT plays in the ACC, currently ranked 6th in power conference rankings. Many fans outside of the ACC view the conference as a joke. With traditional powerhouses like Miami and Florida St. having troubling coming "back", I don't want to see VT to have a scenario like that.
So to conclude, I think Beamer is a great coach and has shown that he can reload every year, IF that stops happening though(this year could be the beginning for the Chicken littles), not good, because I'm not sure VT can have the same success without Beamer.
