The Current Freshman Thoughts

So I'm currently a freshman at VT yet I share the views of most of the older fans. I believe the student section has grown incredibly apathetic about the games and have become superficial football fans. I thought I'd share an event I was just invited to on Facebook that caused my roommate and I more anger then anything we've ever seen on any social networking site. Let me know what you guys think about it.

Irritated

This pisses me off so much, I'm currently a freshman too and I've seen these posts all over our Facebook group. The worst part is, he deletes all of my #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING comments.

Doesn't work... Takes you to your own personal events page.

At least as far as I'm concerned.

Same here

Now I'm curious.

yea same here. I'm curious as

Nevermind, shoulda read below before I posted. Ignore my previous and this post.

My comment is at the top of the page..

I told him this wasnt basketball...

Well if you can't see it, some freshman is trying to get everyone to wear black to the Florida State game because the newest bookstore shirts are black. He claims it would be "hype" and we could accent it with "maroon and orange hats."

#38-0

Well, that's just... kinda really dumb. I mean, I liked the Black uni's from the Boise State game, but FSU does the blackout too soooo.... I'm usually about the #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING, but when we play FSU or BC I'm ok with the idea of wearing Orange. Basically, I think of it as, if they see the color (or very close to it) at home, then we as fans, should avoid it when they visit, but that's kinda just me overthinking it.I always thought it was funny to watch UVA wear all Orange when we play them. Tech fans wear Maroon and it looks like a home game in Scott Stadium. All that said, when in doubt, #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING

I feel that if we advertise that we should AVOID wearing maroon just because its close to FSU's colors it makes us look chicken.

WEAR MAROON DAMNIT.

HOKIE PRIDE #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING ALL THE TIME

Nobody punks us into being "scared" of wearing maroon just because it *might pump the other team up*. That ain't Terror Dome, baby.

Put on your Maroon jersey, Maroon hats, Maroon boxers, Maroon Nike's and I will see y'all in Lane.

I don't have access to view the event.

Could someone take a screen shot, or post the title?

Title and Summary

Virginia Tech Football: Blackout 2012

Guys, I have a great idea. So, Virginia Tech has done this in the past, but this year it's not official. But, I say for the Florida State game we make our own Blackout! Everyone wears black to the stadium (the students at least). It doesn't matter, but the new Enter Sandman shirts would look cool all in unison. SPREAD THE WORD!!! Tell as many of your friends and upperclassmen as you can! I want this to spread big!

Currently over 1,700 people are invited to this event.

#38-0

He must have made two events

Because I was invited to one that is only involving about 400 students... but it's growing...

Beyond Dumb

Wear maroon, or don't go. It's that simple. (I'm going to assume this clown throws paper planes during the game too.)

This just made me laugh out loud, in the office. Oops

Tempted to post this on the page hahahaha. That gave me a good laugh.

This is now up on the Blackout facebook page haha

Something else that is stupid

While this event is already stupid enough, there are people on there saying it's okay to throw paper airplanes and boo the team. I really have no idea how to argue with these idiots so I'm just going to let this go before I hurt someone.

This is nonsense and pointless. It wouldn't work even if it was a good idea. When they tried to do the blackout for boise there were more black shirts than normal (normal being 0) but orange and maroon still dominated the crowd.

I'm wearing my Hokie colored Lebrons, a maroon shirt under an orange hoodie, and an orange hat. The only thing black will be my skin.

Personally, I can't find the event on facebook and I think it's best that way.

And Beamer said in his press conference before Boise that he wanted to see a sea of orange and maroon like at home, not black.

For the Boise game I wore that black 'UT PROSIM' shirt they made for the game.

But I wore it UNDER MY MAROON JERSEY

I said in a reply above that we should never be scared to wear maroon (or even orange) to a game because the other team wears a similar color (ie: FSU or BC) and it might pump them up. We always need to have that Terror Dome mentality all day, every day.

Wear Maroon and Orange and lets go kick some ass.

"Somebody came on the field and painted a T beside the V"

REACH FOR EXCELLENCE @goobvt_sg

Same

Wore the UT PROSIM shirt, but under my uniform as they made all of cadets who did not previously buy a ticket wear our dress uniform.

Now that I've graduated I wear my Orange Adidas with Maroon laces. Always get complemented on how awesome they are, even when I went up to Pitt for that atrocity.

The MVs

Here's the deal...everything that has gotten the crowd involved and caught on to a stadium-wide thing has started in the band. Jumping to Enter Sandman, Stick It In, the "Block that Kick" motion, the kickoff "number is gonna die" chant, and such all started in the North Endzone with the MVs. The problem is that there hasn't been anything new and exciting since Stick It In got the axe. FSU has the War Chant and as much as I hate it, it's simple and the ENTIRE stadium does it. That was Stick It In for us. While we need something similar, the team doesn't need fans wearing special shirts or having paper airplane throwing contests, they need passion. The band is probably one of the loudest blocks of people along with the Corps as far as 60 minutes of dedication to being inside the opponent's head. Most of our fans this year could learn a lesson or two from them.

Stick it in shouldn't have got the axe

the axing of stick it in is a just another example of something I've mentioned in a previous post on another forum topic... our program as a whole is too worried about morals... they get rid of stick it in because of sexual connotations. It's college, everything has sexual connotations when you're 18-22 years old. It's ridiculous, we chanted stick it in when our team was close to sticking the ball in the endzone. If the male cheerleaders were behind the female cheerleaders as they bent over while doing the stick it in motion, then I would completely understand. But it wasn't harmful, it was all in fun, and weaver took it away from us. It was a great chant and not only that, the music/beat was one of the best we had. Sorry for that, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Agree with everything you said btw.

I agree it's all about passion. It has nothing to do with color-themed-"outs" whether they be white, black, maroon, or orange...

There should be an event posted that says:
"Virginia Tech vs. Florida State (Thursday, November 8th)"
Description: 1. SHOW UP. 2. WEAR TEAM COLORS (NOT BLACK. MAROON. ORANGE, ONLY IF YOU MUST.) 3. YELL LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT FOR ALL FOUR DEFENSIVE DOWNS, FROM OPPOSING TEAM HUDDLE THROUGH THE SNAP OF THE BALL. 4. BE SILENT WHEN THE OFFENSE IS ON THE FIELD. 5. BEAT FSU.

If you make that facebook group

I wil instantly say I am attending and invite everyone I know.

Logan 3:16

I'll make the event

Friend me (that goes for everyone who is a current Tech student/knows people in the area). Most of my FB friends are from Florida, so I would need some current Tech students to spread the word. (I don't attend Tech).

Name is Will Hatch by the way. My profile pic is of me standing in front of a Black and White sedan that is a replica of the Blues Brothers' car.

Not even joking...

Band shenanigans

I'm an HT, and we've picked up a lot of your stuff from MV friends and brothers. I've taught people the lyrics to We Will Rock You, the (enter number here) is gonna die chant, Dirty Old Hokie, and we're trying to bring back Three Blind Mice and Stick It In, though we aren't as loud as y'all so it won't be the same. I know for a fact the reason Bowling Green missed a field goal was because the trumpets were doing block that kick with shiny objects in the sunlight. We also have a cadence called Bitchslap that we do after interceptions and fumble recoveries that y'all might wanna steal as a replacement for Stick It In. Same sexual motions and making fun of the other team, but it hasn't been banned. And you're right, it starts with our organizations. What we oughtta do is develop something new together, institute it in our respective endzones, and spread it like wildfire so we can very quickly get people to have fun and be engaged in the game again. Then, and only then, will we see Lane return to true Terror Dome form.

I really like what MV does on 3rd downs for the other team now. I can't tell if it's new this year but they do a dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnn type thing really quickly (I don't know the name of it) that is pretty cool.

Imperial March (Star Wars) is what you're thinking of, I believe.

And they play it when the defense comes on the field. Have for a long time.

"Somebody came on the field and painted a T beside the V"

REACH FOR EXCELLENCE @goobvt_sg

Probably

This is probably it, I think I just noticed it for the first time this year (which is pretty surprising). I noticed that they played what I'm thinking about most of the time when the other team just gets a third down (so it's played before third down) but once I heard it during second down so it might just be what you're talking about.

Beethoven

It's an arrangement of Beethoven's 5th with just the main line. And yes, it is usually planned for 3rd downs. We used to have a specific set of songs we would play for each down, but that changes occasionally.

Bitchslap

It's one of the few times I wish the HT's were bigger/louder. One of the few things I miss from being a cadet at games and maybe "C"

Best thing the band ever did was playing the Empire Strikes Back theme every time there was a sack, tackle for a loss, or a teeth rattling hit. Everything else, Sandman, Stick it In, the keychains... it all pales in comparision for me.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Cosign!

And sadly, if I remember correctly, this was killed sometime during my sophomore or junior year (2002-03). In the North, I used to scream for them to play it.

We Will Rock You

I personally prefer We Will Rock You when we sack them. The words to it, that few people really hear after each line of "We Will Rock You" are:
Hey! We just sacked you!
Hey! We'll do it again!
Hey! I think he likes it!

Yea I used to sing along to the "Hey! We just sacked you" part in my North days. Never knew the rest but it makes sense now.

Nice!

Totally forgot about that one! Definitely used to yell along with that.

Ole!

We (I'm in the MV's) also sing the soccer classic "ole" after most fumble recoveries. It goes:
"Ole, ole ole ole, Ole, Ole (scream: EAT SHIT!)" and repeat.
But yeah, We Will Rock You is great when there are a lot of people yelling along. I think I saw some Duke players look back at the North end zone after the last sack, which was great. Also, feel free to add a Stick It In chant to any random drum cadence. The band is desperately trying to keep it alive, and a grassroots movement through the student section would be awesome.

HOKIE HOKIE HOKIE HI
'14 grad

Not necessarily directed at you, but ...

The "Block That Kick" motion needs to die a swift death.

When the other team is punting or kicking a FG, fans' hands should not be waving up & down.

Instead, they should be cupped on either side of an open, screaming mouth.

...

I missed these:

This

Every Single person in my seating area refuses to yell on 4th down other than me because "3rd down is more important" Students these days don't know what they're talking about...

Logan 3:16

Whaaaaat?

That is absurd and makes my head hurt just trying to see how that makes sense to them...

Deleted?

Either the event was deleted or I am now blocked from it. Would someone like to verify?

#38-0

Hopefully deleted.

I believe it's been deleted.

Glad that thing got squashed already! Goes to show that there are still a huge amount of legit Hokies on campus.
An earlier comment mentioned booing our own team at a game...who does that??!! I can't believe anyone would do that and not get instantly chastised for it from better fans

yea, the only person wearing a Hokies uniform you can boo while in LANE is sean glennon

I will be honest

last season I let a boo escape my lips directed at Scott Demler. I immediately felt horrible and wished I could have it back, but that obviously couldn't happen. I am resolved never to boo the Hokies again under any circumstances. The referees, on the other hand, are fair game.

Your boo was probably more directed at the coaches for giving him so many chances, but they obviously didn't help Demler and just made him more anxious on every punt.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

i've heard

that he came to games still hungover ... and from the looks of his twitter, he parties a lot ... so fuck that -- he deserved to get boo'ed ... i've seen middle-schoolers who could punt better than him ... it was pretty obvious to me that he didn't put in the time -- even as a punter .. if you don't wanna put in the time, do the team a favor and move on

if you're talking about scott demler, then this is not true. i know him and he's a really nice guy who worked hard very hard. a combination of a chronic injury and then nerves from being booed are what made his punting so sporadic. if you ever watched him in warm-ups then you would know that he had a hell of a leg.

Bummer

I feel bad for the guy, if only he could have been stone-cold 24/7...

Goes to show what negative effect douche bags booing actually has on players.
Hence, DON'T BOO YOUR OWN TEAM!

1. None of our players deserve to get booed.

Joe I don't know where you find them, but never stop

Disagree

While I generally don't support Booing, if fans are going to cheer for a player making a great play, they have the same right to boo the player for inexcusable play. If LT3 over throws on all his pass attempts, Marcus gives up on deep pass that leads to an interception, and the offense goes 3 and out several times, getting 30 yds of offense in the 1st half, then Boos are deserving.

It's ok for a fan to be displeased. It's ok to display your emotion as a fan. The players aren't 8 years old, they can handle it.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Save the booing for the NFL, those players are paid to play.

College players shouldn't be booed. If a player isn't doing his job on the field, it is the coach's responsibility to replace that player.

I agree with Joe, None of our players deserve to be booed.

It's a great day to be a Hokie!

So, we can boo the AD then?

and the coaches, and anyone else who makes money? How about we boo the attendant at McComas? She gets a cut of the millions of dollars we spend at these games. But we can't boo the players, the ones who are accountable for the play on the field, because they don't make money? I don't get it.

Don't get me wrong, I think booing is way too common and overrated. I don't boo the other team or it's star players during introductions. And, I don't boo the refs when they make a bad call. But I think the babying of college football players is WAY TOO HIGH by football fans. They're adults. They can handle it.

All I'm saying is this: If they can't handle the criticism, then they don't deserve the praise. If a crowd of drunk college students, most of which don't even understand the intricacies of the game, believe the best way to show their frustration with the play on the field is to boo, then so be it. Let them boo.

🦃 🦃 🦃

-1 (sometimes wish there was a -1 as well...)

You can be disappointed for sure. Even complain. But don't boo. Think about it, you're there to support your team and do anything possible to help us get a win. Booing might even snowball the situation and just make him even worse.

So how do you show your dissappointment?

How do you complain? Are we writing letters? What's the proper way that a CROWD can display dissatisfaction with the product they're paying for?

Booing should have no effect on game play. If it does, then the adults playing the game shouldn't be playing. Find another adult who is less fragile.

🦃 🦃 🦃

but they aren't adults..they are 18-22 year old kids

Please tell that

to every person who booed Bryce Harper. He's only 19, he's a kid, nobody should have booed him this year. Oh wait, nobody cared that he's only 19. In fact, that's why everybody did Boo him.

Anyways, most players on the field are 20-23 year olds. Which, by America's laws, are adults. They live on their own. They can vote. They can buy cigarettes and alcohol. They can enlist in the army and fire semi-automatic machine guns in enemy lands. They can go to trial and put in jail for life. Don't tell me these are kids.

🦃 🦃 🦃

this argument

is silly. bryce harper makes millions

VT Class of 2017

Bryce Harper is a professional by choice, Tech's players are amateurs and students.

And, are there actually Nats fans that booed Bryce?

Dude I think they know when we're disappointed in them. They're probably more harsh on themselves, hopefully. You gotta think that when they realize that when their fellow Hokies are booing them that it might pile up a little too high. They're technically adults for sure, but barely. Plus they aren't professionals, they CHOSE to be Hokies and we should be thankful. If they aren't pulling their weight then the coaching staff should be the ones to bench them.

My diatribe ends here

I think we're mostly differing on semantics.

When someone says they "don't deserve to be booed," to me it sounds like they're trying to protect the players. I don't think the players need protection. They're adults. In a perfect world, no adult would ever get their feelings hurt. But as an adult, you learn to take criticism. You learn to use criticism to fuel your fire.

I personally think Booing is pointless and dumb. It doesn't really do anything, positive or negative. All it does is give a CROWD something to rally their emotions around. And that's it.

Maybe I misunderstood what Joe and others meant by "don't deserve to be booed." If they meant, no person, no matter the circumstance, deserves booing because it's pointless, then I agree. But if they're suggesting that players don't deserve to be booed because they're not being paid, or that they're "just kids," or that it will hurt their feelings, then I will never agree with that. STOP BABYING COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS! (Mike Gundy, I'm looking at you.)

🦃 🦃 🦃

i just don't agree with fans booing players on their team. i couldn't care less about booing players of the opposing team or refs

Regardless

of whether or not you think it's ok to boo our players and coaches (amateur vs. professional, supporting your team vs. expressing frustration in a product paid for, etc.) I think the most important thing is this:
There is no circumstance in which the Lane Stadium crowd booing gives us a greater chance of winning. Zero. At BEST case, it has no effect on the game. But I think there is the very real chance that you are harming our team's effort to win a game. I think it puts a greater clamp on an already down player's confidence (The Demler example above is perfect for this. Kid obviously had a leg, but performing in the games was getting in his head, and I guarantee the boos weren't a helper). At the very least, booing is a distraction to the players who's concentration should be only on forgetting a bad play and getting lined up to make a great play to make up for it.
I get extremely emotional watching games. I scream, good things and bad, when players make plays or miss them. I scream at officials. I scream at coaching decisions. So I understand the need to express the feelings the game (that we love, otherwise why are we here?) gives us. But I don't boo. If you're disappointed, then if nothing else, just be quiet. That speaks volumes. Otherwise, keep cheering your team on, and do everything in your power to help the team win. That's my take.

"The TKP community is unrivaled."
-Justin Fuente, probably

Concur

I boo the shit out of the opposing team when they run out on the field but never our own guys. I might exclaim a "what the fuck was that!?!" or "make a fucking tackle!!!!" and get looks from the people in front of us. Refs get booed as well but to me it's just poor form to boo your own team.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

And, for what it's worth, you might be hurting the program. There are always recruits at the games, It's bad enough if they see Tech lose, it's worse if they see bad fans.

EXACTLY

Its a reflection of the program and I think Shane made mention of this on his radio interview with Kyle Bailey
