This made me sick to my stomach. Mine and others' predictions on the "JC Coleman's Breakout" post have come true... This does not make me feel any better about the upcoming game. It doesn't say who they plan on starting at running back, but if it isn't Coleman...

hopefully those comments are a "keep the young guy grounded" kind of deal. I think JC4 will start and get the bulk of the carries, deservedly so. Regardless, we need LT3 to make the right reads and be more of a presence in the run game (like last week) or none of our backs will be successful.
But if Holmes or anyone else besides Coleman lines up in the backfield on our first offensive snap, there is something wrong with where our coaches' heads are at.
Definitely agree, but ionno if you've noticed my previous posts on the site, I already think there is something wrong with where our coaches' heads are at haha. But I'm with you, JC4 should be the clear starter. I think he will be.
I think it would be fair enough if they started against Clemson exactly as they did against Duke, Gregory lined up in the backfield, J.C. on the field as the motion man in the slot.
I agree though, Coleman and LT3 have to get the bulk of the carries. It's nothing against Holmes, I think he's shown his upside (against Cincinnati in the second half), but Coleman is a homerun threat on an offense without many homerun threats. He needs to be on the field and be lathered up with carries.
I agree Holmes isn't terrible, he just hasn't shown the same flash that JC has... Holmes is more of a specific down&distance back whereas JC can play every down.
Also, about him lined up in the slot, why don't we ever throw him the ball in space instead of just handing it off on jet sweeps and all that BS that rarely works?
A Lot
of it is packaged based at the beginning of the game so that does dictate who "technically" gets the start and who doesn't
I'm not sure if I agree Holmes is just a specific down and distance back. I can't think of one specific situation where I'd take Holmes over the field. He hasn't powered his way through holes, and over blockers like a typical third-down back would.
I think at the end of the day J.C. is the better option because he has the athleticism and speed to overcome the deficiencies of an offensive line that struggles as a group to reestablish a new line of scrimmage a yard up the field. Coleman gets to and through the hole or corner quickly, has the ability to win one-on-one battles against the unblocked defender, and can take it to the distance.
Holmes to me is more methodical, but runs well when the line is doing their job.
Only the coaches can answer your question about Coleman on the slot. Showing a wrinkle or two off that Jet action probably needs to happen to keep defenses honest, but at the end of the day if they cutback on the motion/pre-snap movement like against Duke, I'm fine with that. Actually, I'd prefer it because it's straight forward and it worked. There's too much going on with the offense as it is, doing less not more is the key.
I wouldn't read too much
Too much into the article. The offensive staff doesn't seem comfortable enough to stray away from a tailback by committee system just yet. As great as JC's performance was it wasn't really effective until Logan got the running game going and he became the "hot hand". He seems to have some promise, but they still want to rotate guys in other packages. Greggory has done well running downhill. Even Scales scored on short yardage Saturday. Therefore, I don't think it's a knock to him versus figuring out which backs go where/when. Is this the best strategy? I think the jury is still out as these new offensive schemes are starting to solidify.
The reality is that we'd like an every down back with a list of compliments behind him. What we have is a long list of talent that can compliment one another, but no clear leader.
In fact, this season LT has carried the ball 71 times. The next is Holmes with 56 and Coleman at 44. The success of it all shows again that it hinges on Logan first.
Thanks for the insight. I guess we all should realize that Logan has to have a good game throwing AND running for the offense to be successful... Let's hope that by next season and perhaps the end of this regular season we have some stars that can make the offense more versatile and threatening to defenses. Because if the whole thing hinges on Logan, then we have the potential for off games whenever he has one... And that is a HUGE problem.
Of course, that doesn't need to be said explicitly.
it may be a way for the coaching staff to keep Coleman grounded, but what does someone have to do to become a clear #1 back this year? I guess the fact that we're more thank halfway through our season and still trying to find a RB is scary to me. Considering the teams coming up I feel like the team needs it as well.
Yes. Thank you, I think that's my main problem with it as well.
JC is the starter on the Hokiesports depth chart

JC's highlight tape is insane. He comes out with soulja boy's "speakers going hammer" and just goes HAMMER vs every high school opponent. i think i watched the tape at least once a week this past summer
