It's official.
BREAKING: ACC votes to add Louisville sources tell @espn. Cards will be 6th team to leave Big East for ACC— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) November 28, 2012
-----
They need 75% of the vote.
This is from David Glenn, who broke the news of a vote late last night.
"Given the way the conversations have gone to this point, either Louisville will be approved for an invitation (Wednesday) or nobody will be approved for an invitation," one ACC source said. "Any other result would be a major surprise."
ACC presidents have debated how much weight to put on factors such as recent athletic success, traditional athletic success, TV market size, academic reputation and geography, sources said.
As a long-time basketball power with a rising football program and a dynamic athletic director (Tom Jurich), Louisville is seen as by far the best candidate athletically. However, in terms of academics (see below) and TV market size (see bottom), the Cardinals would fit at the bottom of the existing ACC spectrum.
So the ACC bucks its own trend and favors athletics over academics, and in this new world of conference networks, TV sets.
Here's what McMurphy (and Katz, I guess) had to say.
The Atlantic Coast Conference presidents and chancellors will hold a Wednesday morning teleconference in which they are expected to vote to add Louisville to the ACC, an industry source told ESPN.
North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said Tuesday that the league's presidents would consider Louisville, UConn and Cincinnati for membership. The ACC is seeking a team to replace Maryland, which will leave for the Big Ten in 2014.
Sources said there is a sense among league presidents that the ACC will vote to add only one member because the remaining two Big East schools have no other options and the ACC could get them later on if the ACC lost any other schools.
So, if the vote goes as expected and Louisville is added, how do you feel about that? What division should they play in? Should the divisions be realigned? Who should their divisional rival be? Does this stabilize the ACC? Would you prefer another conference over the ACC?

In simple terms
We could do worse, but I don't see what we get with Louisville at all.
Hahahaha, I love the Office... Not so much lately since Steve Carrell left. But this is a classic moment.
I'm sitting here trying to come up with something witty to say about Louisville being added to the ACC. About the only thing that comes to mind is:
ppppppppppppppffffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttt
best option available ... unfortunately
Look at the bright side
It isn't Navy. We don't need a second underachieving team with a bullshit offense.
My thoughts exactly
Honestly
If we were going to pull in an academically inferior school (compared to the rest of the ACC) with good athletics, we would have been much better served offering WVU when we had the chance.
But Maryland hadn'y bolted for the B1G yet, which is why we're getting Louisville, right?
Yes, and I'm not faulting the ACC for failing to see the future, but this is just another example of the ACC being reactive vs. proactive in the expansion race. We can't keep taking additions from the weak football conferences and expect to strengthen the ACC.
The SEC turned down WVU too
WVU just isn't that valuable.
The song remains the same
Swofford pillages the Big East for another basketball school with a football problem. Don't get me wrong, L'ville would be a decent football add if Charlie Strong wasn't about to leave for a better job. As hard as they try to change it, the fact remains that L'ville will always be a Stepping Stone program rather than a Stopping Point.
The hierarchy of NCAA conferences is getting more distinct with each passing day. While Swofford might fancy the ACC as being near the top of the food chain, we're really not much more than just one of the other fiddler crabs who feed exclusively on tidal pool trash...biding our time until we become the dinner for someone else.
VT4SEC, VT4B12, VT4ANYWHEREBUTHERE
time to take a side
Wake me when we get an SEC invitation. This is a band-aid, maybe a crutch, meant to patch ourselves up and carry on our way. TKP members have hashed out all the compelling reasons with acute insight over the years on all matters conference realignment. And because of that I am more than aware of the counterarguments to this perhaps brash and extreme statement…For me it comes down to one thing: I believe football is the greatest and most important sport ever and want that to be the focus of VT athletics. And I don’t like leftovers or setting your sights too low (love the fiddler crabs analogy above). Did the ACC offer membership to Florida or Alabama? No you say? Then we’re looking in the wrong place for a home.
ESPN article has some interesting info

Apparently UL's athletic dept. financials are solid. Also the top TV market for college basketball (although I'm sure UK is part of the reason for that.) Football is a pretty significant upgrade over Maryland, although I wonder if any of the SEC programs looking for a coach will go after Charlie Strong. And they're good in some of the non-revenue sports.
Fuck this shit #VT4SEC
Fuck this shit

I'm actually for adding Navy, probably because my brother is a graduate, but for a couple other reasons too. Navy would likely become the highest-ranking ACC institution in terms of academics, would bring in a lot of those vacated Maryland TV sets and increase TV market share throughout DC and on a national scale. Competitive in football (think of who they've beaten with a roster of zero-stars), excellent in some of the Olympic sports, and a different culture the ACC doesn't have. Makes a lot more sense to add them than to keep, say...Boston College.
We vacated MD TV sets?
I thought VT and UVa had significant enough coverage in that market that it isn't an issue?
Im not sure
why everyone is so down on Louisville. They are a decent football program as of late and add some beef on the basketball end. If UVA and GT do head to the B1G I'll drive the wagon for the SEC, but until then, not a bad addition.
Also ironic that Montrezl couldnt commit to an ACC school yet here we are.
agreed, especially if you do a direct comparison of Maryland vs. Louisville in football and basketball.
I'm with you. I don't really have a problem with Louisville. Louisville is the only school I would consider from the Little East. Maybe cincy too.
My problem is with us still being in the ACC, but as long as we're in the ACC, Louisville isn't a terrible move.
Issue I have
Is that the conference is no longer valuing academics. If that's what's important to the conference, stick to your guns. If it isn't, there is no reason we should have taken Louisville when WVU was on the table, which is a school that is a better fit loacation wise, and athletically stronger.
why didnt they want wvu?
because fuck motherfuckin wvu thats why!
Bitches can't even spell...
If we realign the divisions I say VT should be put in the East Division. Of the SEC.
As long as more of the members of our conference don't jetset the hell out of here, I'm fine with Louisville coming in... As some people have said, they're having recent success in their football program with players such as Teddy Bridgewater and their basketball program will bolster that area of the conference as many have said the ACC is in a decline.
Still, I'm not a huge fan of all this chaos and the fact that we're still sitting on our hands watching it all...
What Louisville Doesn't Add
9. Washington, DC
26. Baltimore
30. Hartford-New Haven
50. Louisville
via http://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets
And another
34. Cincinnati
Even though Cincinnati is higher on paper than Louisville, it has tough competition from tOSU (which basically dominates the state), and the bengals. Louisville and Hartford metro don't have a football powerhouse instate school and/or a NFL team with a black-hearted owner to consider when factoring in positives/negatives of a new market.
IMO, UConn lost its footing because of Jim Calhoun's retirement. Tobacco road wants hall of fame basketball coaches and, hypothetically speaking, if Calhoun had stayed, we may have seen a different decision. I'm sure the recent sanctions had some involvement too. I don't buy the football statements because I think UL and UConn football is a wash when you consider markets, fan involvement, and the risk that Charlie Strong could leave and take UL's relevance with him (see UL after Petrino's departure).
I view this as beneficial as
Saving two timeouts to ice an opposing kicker twice at the end of a game.
#VT4SEC
The only thing I think we gain by adding Louisville is a nice away game in the early fall. Other than that adding Louisville is blah. I guess at least hokiesq gets one more game to go to every few years.
Whatever...
It is just crap imo. VT is being stubborn and not seeing the benefits of moving to the SEC. Granted I do see a bunch of this chatter about us staying with ACC as lip service. If we had received a legitimate financial offer it would be a no brainer. We would have a way tougher schedule but our recruiting would improve and I think we could be competitive.
Hopefully the addition of these weaker programs will instigate an offer from the SEC. If we don't make some move we will be a big fish in a weak conference that will be viewed as the conference with a seat at the table but doesn't deserve it.
From a purely practical standpoint
Louisville is the best all around athletics department of any of the potential ACC schools. Solid in football of late, great in basketball. And an upgrade over Maryland and their crybaby fanbase.
Not a major TV market, but didn't we just lock in a multi-year TV deal anyway? (I honestly don't know.) The conference doesn't need Maryland to get the DC market - that's what we're here for.
I called this
a few days ago....Cardinals were the best fit available from the BEC....too hard for the ACC to pull anyone from B1G, SEC...so the path of least resistance theory works again.
THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY, I COULD JUST STOMP ON A LOUISVILLE PLAYER'S CALF!
So, is the SEC looking to expand their market?
about going to the SEC
I see a bunch of people thinking we are going to SEC sometime soon....i hope they know that WE voted increase the exit fee to $50 million dollars. why would we vote to increase to exit fee if we were planning on going to SEC anytime soon. Us going to the SEC is incorrect speculation.
on the topic of Louisville their football and financials are better than Maryland's. so i'm fine with the addition
Louisville may not be so Strong soon
As most predicted, Charlie Strong will probably be leaving Louisville soon. According to ESPN, he interviewed for the Auburn job, even though he's denying it (but don't they all). Even if he doesn't get or take that job, it definitely seems he's gone sooner than later. That Louisville troller got mad that we called them a stepping stone program. Wonder how he feels now.
"Auburn, Charlie Strong Talked"
After what Auburn did to Chizik and more notably, Tuberville, I would hope Strong would have more self-respect then to take a job with such an irrational booster base. Auburn boosters EXPECT a SEC title in 2 years, a national title in 3, and to beat a NFL-level bama team in all years. None of that is realistically possible right now, and I think Strong, and most coaches that distinguish foot from ass, will realize that and will stay away.
money talks but you're right about auburn .. other than money -- it's a total shit job
regarding an earlier comment -- the louisville decision had plenty to do with football ... it just so happens that they have a good b-ball program too. if the acc had voted to take uconn, it would make a very possible scenario of fsu/clemson leaving to even more likely. uconn brings very little to the table and the acc should take cincinnati before uconn
I attended the Rutgers-Louisville game tonight
went to the RU game with my buddy who's a huge RU fan.
its late so ill keep this short.
1) bridgewater is a baller. broken wrist and foot, i dont even know, he had a 76% completion rate. son of a mother duck. thats good.
2) louisville fans dont travel at all. there were probably 50 maximum louisville fans there.
3) Rutgers fans sit down on 1st and 2nd down. they only stand on 3rd downs. kinda lame. felt real bad for them though. epitome of a sour loss.
To reiterate what has already been said:
pppffffffffffttttttttttt
