Post UVA: Quick Thoughts

1) JC mothaphucking Coleman, that is all. apologize to the man.
2) Every point we made was by a freshman.
3) Corey Marshall is a beast without proper recognition
4) Our DL next year is LEGIT, as is the rest of our D
5) Love him or hate him, Brewer has balls of steel and never stops getting up. (that's what she said)
6) Offense still plays better when it is in "uptempo" mode
7) Throw to Bucky more
8) I may be in minority but I hope for no change in coaching in off-season (unless Shane gets an HC post, good for him)
9) Every point we made was by a FRESHMAN.
10) @VArecruits... how many times does it take, maybe...

12. Uva players showed a lack of class with all the trash before the game. Stupid, embarrassing & unnecessary coming from a team losing 10 straight games. Great to slap them down again.

georgebd

Agree, with Lambert as an exception. I felt like wearing the #11 Commemorative Jersey was classy on his part. Wish he would have posed for a side-by-side photo with Kendall after the game.

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

And not to turn the thread negative (I was there with bronchitis cheering my @$$ off) but it is about time the coaches yanked Knowles from the kick return team the final time they were trotted out there. He has been timid for the past year and last night had two returns (the fumble and the 1 yard line) that could have cost us the game.

Let's Go...

Amen he plays scared, I've been saying that for so long, but in all fairness he was only back there last night because newsome got ejected for "targeting"

Yeah, he got ejected for targeting but that a$$ last year in the bowl game did not.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Exactly.

I have no idea what the process looks like for revieiwing officials. But I wish we could submit tape to the ACC with Newsome's hit followed by the hit Logan took in the Sun Bowl and ask WTF?

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

^yes.

I sat last night watching the Newsome 'penalty' thinking: "in the name of all things bogus how was THAT a penalty and the hit on Logan NOT?!"
(and yes, I'm still pissed.)

Because ACC refs are the second worst in the NCAA...the worst being the Pac-12, of course.

It was a catch.

Only one of those two calls was the wrong one. The UCLA linebacker made a perfectly legal hit. If it was Dadi doing the same thing, we would eat that shit up. Have to be a little objetive.

Well, since UCLA was penalized for it, it wasn't legal. The discussion is over the severity of the penalty, not whether it was legal or not.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different one. I remember one really hard hit that a lot of people said was "dirty" that wasn't flagged, and was just a really good hit.

I'm referring to the helmet to Thomas's chin that knocked him out and took him out of the game.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Ah yep, same one. I thought that one went without a flag. Should have.

Nope, 15 yd personal foul.
Should have been targeting for launching and hitting with the crown of the helmet.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Zumwalt targets

When you watch the videos it's obvious he's reaching up with the crown not hitting him with a shoulder. Not Thomas helmet is already coming off from the hit going up whereas there's not much else of an impact to the rest of his body.

Thomas is knocked out from the blow to the head before he hits the ground.
You can see it in the way he falls.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Perfect picture. Feet on ground, so no launching. And if you look at the angle of the UCLA on the helmet, then it's clear it's not the crown he's hitting with. Clean hit.

His feet are still on the ground because his upward momentum is stopped by Logan's chin. Also, I can't believe you can say he's not hitting with the crown of his helmet. This is the textbook case of targeting, and how the refs simply called an "unnecessary roughness" penalty, I'll never know. It's a shot to the head/neck area of a QB immediately after he released the ball, which is targeting no matter what (doesn't matter what he hits with - head, chest, forearm, hand, whatever. You hit 'em high, it's targeting). Add in the fact that he's leading with the crown of his helmet, and you could not ask for a clearer-cut case of targeting a defenseless opponent.

Jesus are we still debating this a year later? Targeting or not, who cares? That was a year ago and no matter what you believe it doesn't change anything

#38-0

Discussion of football rules is perfectly fair game around here. If you don't like it, scroll on rather than sniping at someone trying to share some knowledge.

"Exit light..."

He's right though. It still doesn't change anything or the fact that officials just plain don't respect our program in general.

UCLA is level with the ground as his initial contact and thrust is upward into the chin make the crown the contact. The crown being the top.

You can tell this is the direction of thrust by checking the only part moved from contact being Thomas' helmet moved up off his head. And the LBs body up on his toes. He's not pushing forward towards his chest, he's pushing upwards towards the chin.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

3) Corey Marshall is a beast without proper recognition

Very true. Corey was a monster last night. He was a force in disrupting so many plays. Well done Corey!

Class of '02. GO HOKIES!

I'm so glad he decided to come back to the program

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

As am I. Big props to him

We're both likely in the minority on #8. Last week was a cluster F on O, but let's give Lefty at least 1 more season. He has basically all of the skill players coming back. Another year of Searles working with the OL & perhaps we'll see some actual improvement.

Don't give up on your dreams.

Probably a minority, but I am in it. Scot did enough to get another year. The offense has been hammered by injuries and O-L issues. Searels getting another year to actually get his recruits in the system and develop Grimes recruits is crucial. A new coach would set back the line even more.

Anyone at the game hear the PA announcer leave his mic on a couple times? Cracked me up

Best troll of the night.

That's the one I noticed.

I think up to that point, I thought it was the big guy behind me and to my right.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

The PA announcer was great. Those mistakes were awesome.

I honestly don't think the time out remark was a mistake...

Little bro and I were dying at that one because the dudes behind us had just made a TimeCop jab. So apparently everyone was thinking it.

I believe this was his last game, retiring after at least 30+ years. I don't think those were actually mistakes, and he was just having fun because it was his last game.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I heard something about his last game as well.

It's a cool thought, but it's Tony Distler (as far as I'm aware of) that's retiring. He's the one that does the intros and spellouts/announcements during the bands' performances. I'm not sure who the other guy who does the general play-by-play in the stadium but he was the one leaving his mic on. I haven't heard if he's retiring or not.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

The Sports Information Director, Dave Smith, is also retiring this year.

"Exit light..."

I'm guessing that's the guy that does the announcing? I wasn't sure what his title was so I couldn't find him. If so, good to know.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Not sure. His bio doesn't mention doing play-by-play, but his retirement celebration was all over VT Football's Twitter feed before the game, so it's a big deal. Probably the most well-known retirement this year.

"Exit light..."

Probably the most well-known retirement this year, so far...

The guy who does the announcing does not work in the Athletics Department, but he does both football and men's basketball game. His name is slipping my mind at the moment, but I can give you a name tomorrow after the basketball game.

Let's play against Maryland in the Military Bowl. Can that happen? It should.

Only if you guarantee that we beat them by 38.
They are high up on my 'we owe them' list.

a school named after the 4th president

If it's any consolation, my alma mater knocked them out of the FCS Playoffs on Saturday in Harrisonburg and didn't allow them to score in the second half. To make it even sweeter former "bad tech" QB Vad Lee was starting for them and barely completed 50% of his passes.

I am saving my offensive changes judgement until after the bowl game. If the coaches can't come up with a gameplan that shows some consistency moving the ball after 15 practices all for the same opponent, then it's time for a change.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Agreed. I'm in no way a fan of keeping the same staff as this year as many have shown that their plans fail more often than they succeed, that said I know that major changes most likely won't take place next year no matter how much we want it.

The UVa victory was great and all but doesn't hide the shortcomings in our coaching department for me. Let's see how the bowl game goes though.

I think at the very least we have to send out feelers to other potential OCs, and see if who might be interested.. after all, Leftys contract is up soon, and even if we want him back there's no guarantee he'll be here next year

I get your point, but after watching teams swap coaches every two years, I'm a believer that a coordinator needs 3-5 yrs to fix a team that has poor performance. VT's OL has been a mess for yrs. Unless you're getting top recruits, players for that position need multiple yrs to learn. Even if a new OL coach comes in & gets the top 10 OL in a recruiting class it wouid likely take 2 yrs to get them to perform as a solid unit. VT isn't getting top OL recruits, so it'll be 3-4 yrs to fix that part. New of means new scheme, so a new learning curve. Do we really want to do that?

30 years after starting grad school at Virginia Tech, I finally defended my dissertation and earned my PhD.
Don't give up on your dreams.

In college football, you don't have 5 years to do anything. The kids are only eligible for four.

Actually virtually all VT OL recruits will red shirt their 1st year. The very best will be ready to play their RS So yr (3rd yr) and most won't be ready til RS Jr yr (I.e. 4th yr). This year's 5th & 6th yr Sr OL aren't up to the task, so what does that say about the state of the OL, that's on their 3rd OL coach in 3 years?

Same issues apply to the rest, esp cohesion & "buy in" of the team, not to mention that a coach hired in december isnt getting his recruirs. For these reason sHCs should get 5 yrs to turn a program around.

Add on:
Jumbo was at FSU for 3 years, as HC in waiting, before taking over. It took FSU 3 years of top 5 recruiting to get to the Orange bowl & that's with top 15 recruitimng classes in the 2 prior years. Some of you think loeffler has had sufficient opportunity in 2 yrs, with recruiting classes that aren't close to what FSU gets....

30 years after starting grad school at Virginia Tech, I finally defended my dissertation and earned my PhD.
Don't give up on your dreams.

Yes. Jimbo made progress. Loeffler hasn't.

You gotta cut bait when you know you made the wrong decision. You owe it to the kids, in the micro short windows they have, to put the best coaches in their position meetings. We should have never hired him. We should have judged his awful first season correctly and redirected last offseason. Now we are halfway thru the eligibility of a guy like a Trey Edmunds and he is yet to have a competent offseason staff. To take another year from him is malpractice.

Reminders: this is an offensive era. We are worse the Stinespring offenses. Wake Forest game.

We aren't losing anything by not resigning Loeffler because we don't have anything. There us no momentum or growth to continue. We are at milepost 0.0.

So, who then? Who could we hire that would be better? Remember, you need someone that fits the style that Frank likes, as well as someone we can afford, that is ok with the fact that within 3 years he will be searching for another job, can create good working relationships with the current staff, doesn't want to disrupt the offensive staff to bring in his own people (because losing Moorehead with a new OC hire is a distinct possibility, and I don't think anyone wants that), and can step in and retain progress with the offensive recruits.

Unless these questions can be answered with one person, and you (the person doing the hiring) is convinced that the massive amounts of injuries and youth on the offensive side of the ball is not a key element in the struggles of the offense, there should not be a change in offensive coordinator.

Would you like Prys with that?

Yeah, if there really is no interest due to Beamers situation (I doubt that, but nobody knows) or if Beamer sets such conservative parameters that you can't truly upgrade (I concede that has been true in the past but am hopeful Beamer is more open) that you can't hire better, just keep Loeffler. We can just continue on this defense-only path for a few more years.

Frankly, I dislike Loeffler's offense so much that I would give the job to Moorehead or Stiney. AM is worth the shot just to kept him on staff. Stiney has produced better results than Loeffler in his career.

I'd argue the point, but I think it's been done several times over in many other threads.

Basically, starting over would set us even further back.

"That #4, he was all over the field...Offense and defense!" -Mike London

@VTimHokie85

I wonder if our coaches have ever thought of running Ekanem out with the offense in place of Coleman in some goaline and short yardage packages to get more size on the field somewhat deceptively. Maybe line him up as either an H-Back or beside the QB on a QB lead. Should be legal as long as Coleman isn't on the field, but I'm not sure if the deception of bringing a different #4 into the game would be worth the tradeoff of having someone that doesn't practice with the offense taking offensive snaps.

Not allowed to do this per the rules. Ole Miss did it last year and the officials missed it, but you're not allowed to have two different guys with the same number on the same side of the ball, even if they aren't on the field at the same time. I don't know the exact wording of the rule, but whoever the opponent was that day brought it to the attention of the officials and the announcers were talking about it being illegal.

Correct.

http://www.dfoa.com/attachments/article/69/2013-14_Football_Rule_Book.pdf

Section 4, Article 2(e):

Two players playing the same position may not wear the same number during the game.

So Ekanem could not come in and line up as a RB, but I suppose he could come in at another position, as long as JC is still on the sidelines, per Section 4, Article 2(b):

No two players of the same team shall participate in the same down wearing identical numbers.

"Exit light..."

I'm in agreement with #8 as well. I think it might not be as small of a minority as we maybe think. Give this team another run next year with all these coaches. I think we'll see improvement.

Who was it that ran down "Smoke" Mizelle in the open field? Smoke got smoked! I thought DW had come back. Fing awesone.

I am holding judgment until after the bowl game also.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

That was Bonner.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

My wife: "His name is Smoke? He's not that fast, he must get high a lot."

The announcers were taking shots at him too, something along the lines that if you're gonna call yourself Smoke, you better not get ran down from behind.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Maybe his legs were sore from kicking the sides of automobiles.

@VTimHokie85

Bonner.
Nobody knew he was that fast.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

When I saw Bonner run down Smoke, I had very fond memories of Jimmy Williams running down Alvin Pearman.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

My Fam and I here at the Inn @ VT after a crazy night last night. Scotty L. has some recruits in the hotel lobby and he looks to be working it hard. I say he earned another year with that win. Go Hokies, don't care what bowl, I just want to see us continue / (start) to build the physical rushing attack from last night... The O-line was getting after it. Our D-Line was sick when they needed to be all night long... I think the hoos were something like 1 for 16 (?) on money downs.

SCHokie

Thanks for that on scene report.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

The Byrd kid Loeffler has recruited for 2016 at QB is his best recruit. He was on campus this weekend.
