Has anyone run the numbers yet on our scholarship situation for next year? We currently have 21 commits (4 already signed/ January enrollees) per rivals with several others I know we are targeting and I was just wondering how many slots we have to fill? I know you are allowed 25 per cycle but there are ways around that with greyshirts and early enrollees and various other types of Voodoo...er Dork magic.

If my numbers are correct, we have 92 scholarship players, as of right now. Some of those are expected to either greyshirt or prep, but I don't know whom, as of yet. Attrition is possible, to get that number closer/under 85, and the deeper positions that can afford attrition are TE, RB, WR, & OL
...did you just say we can afford attrition at running back.....HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING THIS SEASON??? D: ACL TEARS ON ACL TEARS!!
we have eight scholarship running backs currently on the roster + Sam Rogers who has been used in running back situations. we are projected to add two running backs in this class. assuming we redshirt Williams and McKenzie, Edmonds and Coleman would carry the load, with Reed, Rogers, McMillan, Caleb, Wright, and the freshman battling for scraps. I just don't see how there is room for that many also-rans
I was pretty sure you were missing a joke until you referred to the surplus running backs as also-rans.

I went through the current Roster on Hokiesports.com and there are alot of walk-ons from what I can tell. I think there are only 60 (or close to it) actual scholarship players. We know that some walk-on guys get a scholarships later in their college career. But without knowing who might have gotten an actual scholarship, I guess we won't know. You can also account for the injuries and attrition and that certainly gives us a few more spots.
I gave up on trying to understand scholly numbers a while ago. Through the use of greyshirts, we have perfected the art of blurring that line completely.
