EDSBS Weighs In: 'The Lukewarm Joy of an Adequate Hire'

Whole piece is here - http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2013/1/15/3880030/the-lukewarm-j...

Definitely worth a read. Spencer makes me laugh.

So TKP-ers, what say you?
Feeling lukewarm? Adequate?

Good Read

It is not a bad hire, and it is certainly not a shoe-knocking hammer throw of a signing, either. It's adequate, and will do nicely enough for what Virginia Tech is under Frank Beamer: a defensive team that scores points through field position and, at one point in the past, through special teams.

Very true. A very good fit for Foster's defense. Anyone who wanted an AirRaid offense should just start making out with their cousin now.

WV...HAHAHAHA

+1 sir

I don't think anyone actually thought that Beamer would go with a complete change in mindset on offense. I think Loeffler will do okay as long as they're able to get someone in to develop the O line better.

If the offense can start making some sustained drive and putting even a modicum more points on the board than last year, VT will be in a much better place; and, at least right now, he represents something new and exciting in Blacksburg. Let's just hope he can help the team achieve something exciting next season.

Not to defend O'Cainspring, but how many potentially successful plays were blown up by terrible interior line play and shoddy WR blocking? I recommend reviewing the OL recruiting from 2004-2009... it is beyond atrocious. I wonder how Tyrod lived through it. Grimes is the key guy. Big time recruiter and looks like he's a outstanding coach. I think with that and Loeffler getting to his apparent roots as a run first guy, we'll do really well with this combo.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Yes, adequate.

As French has mentioned at least twice, the problem with Loeffler is that his identity isn't clear. With Pep, it was clear. Franklin, clear. Even if we went with Fridge or Bible, their identity is clear.

I can't quite figure out what a Scot Loeffler wants to be when he grows up. He's worked under Lloyd Carr and Urban Meyer. Does. Not. Compute. He teams with Addazio to make Temple effective. Still. Trouble. Computing. Then, he goes to Auburn, following Gus Fucking Malzahn, and takes his talent and goes all "Pro-Style" on it, giving us an interview in the process where he says, "I don't know what Pro-Style is anymore. We all want to run the ball." WTH is going on here?

Why would you take Malzahn talent and try to go Lloyd Carr on it? And if you've got a Masters Degree in UrbanMeyerology, why did you go back to Lloyd Carr to begin with? Oh, so the answer is that "Gene Chizik made him!" Maybe so, but that doesn't bode well for meetings with Frank Beamer and Billy Hite. "Oh, you want to throw it in the redzone? We don't do that here."

I'm hopeful Loeffler will work. I'm hopeful he has an independent voice in our coaching meetings. He's a bright guy. But develop your Mission Statement, use a sharpie to write it on the wall and live by it.

Did you watch the Stanford bowl game? Pep / David Shaw has made them very "multiple" as well. In fact, I thought that the Stanford offense in the Rose Bowl looked VERY similar to the Auburn offense vs Clemson last year.

Yes, Stanford still has the power set with two tightends and a fullback. But they also ran everything else from empty sets to read options. It was very different offense from when Stanford played VT in the Orange Bowl - - back then, they were almost entirely in the two tight-end power sets, and I believe that is what we all thought Pep would bring to VT. However, he was not the coordinator back then, and, as mentioned, the offense he installed as coordinator was much, much more multipe.

In my opinion, the ONLY thing that sets Stanford apart is that their offensive line will absolutely and consistently maul you. I'm Ok if the playcalling has a "multiple" feel to it, which it will. However, the offensive line needs the consistent mission statement you mentioned, which is to dominate the guy in front of you.

I'm slowly convincing myself that the OL line coach is the most important hire to offensive success.

I've said that all along

Offensive success starts and ends with line play. Get someone who speaks the language of bigmeanfastnasty.

Yep, I agree

I really like the sound of Grimes.

Boy do I disagree

Loeffler absolutely has an identity. Go watch some Temple tape (not temple highlights, go watch an entire game) and do the same with early in the year Auburn tape (some Auburn fans say that chizik took over the offense about half-way through the year and Loeffler lost control of what was happening).

Loeffler is pro-style, but he doesn't just pick plays from a hat. He loves to use an H-back, he likes to zone-run to the strong side of the formation, likes cutback runs using the H-back as a trap blocker, really likes play-action using H-back cutting across the formation (difficult to defend if you're also using the H-back to trap block, will mess your keys up), he likes to pull Guards into holes and kick out with fullbacks, he likes the vertical passing game with some short passing packages.

From the shot-gun, he likes to use the QB as the power-option up the middle. Jet sweep, inverted veer running plays. WR, RB, TE middle screens are frequent, probably because the vertical passing routes force the defense to back off on the edges.

Loeffler has a rhyme and reason for what he is doing out there. Much more so than what i've seen out of Stinespring for the past decade.

That's great to hear...

...thanks. I will look the Temple film up.

I sure hope

That just because Logan said he was coming back that they are delaying an actual announcement about coaches. Those two things might not be relevant but I say the earlier the better so that recruits become intrigued.

Doesn't have anything to do with it

These days, there are multiple levels of attorneys to go through, background checks, and who knows what else before they can make it publicly official.
