Article on the QB carousel at tOSU

Interesting read from the always fantastic Grantland. Whoever settles out as the starter in September will certianly have their hands full. Personally, Cardale Jones is the one who worries me the most. He instantly struck me as a LT3 type player (but much more refined, i.e. not a TE) who can make all the throws and is always a threat on his legs

LT stats notice anything about them? Where does all the Thomas TE people come from?

This is where

Given he has no stats for it, he was still recruited (not just VT) as a TE. Listed and ranked as TE. That will stick for many people. He also lined up as TE for a play or two during Tyrod's last year.

I continue to find it funny how "Rivals projects he will play TE in college" became "Logan Thomas is a converted tight end." He lined up as a WR against Wake in 2010 and caught a TD pass, but that was it AFAIK. I think he *might* have played a down or two at TE (more like slot receiver) early in HS, but was a QB for basically the entirety of his HS career.

"Exit light..."

yea you are probably right about the WR part, but whatever. Its almost like where the NFL scouts projects a college player to play another position to what he played at college. I guess most if not all, recruit "experts" thought he was going to be a TE. We will never know...

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

There's a big difference between "real" NFL scouts and the guys who call themselves scouts because they have a computer, a website, and have played a lot of fantasy football. The reality is he was drafted to play QB, not TE.

There's can also a huge difference between what college coaches are recruiting a player to play and what is divined to be their position on HS recruiting websites. The reality is he was slotted in college for QB, not TE.

I know he was drafted to play QB in the NFL.... never said TE, just giving a broad examples my dude. You are really misreading my comments.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I don't think anyone's misreading or disagreeing. You guys are basically saying the same thing...

"Exit light..."

ehh, go read again

He said he wanted to be a QB -- until about a minute into fall practice his 1st year.

VT coaches may have said otherwise during the recruiting process, but they recruited him as a QB. The recruiting services have no clue on what the correct position is for many players.

He NEVER lined up as a TE in a VT uniform (except for perhaps a few snaps in practice early).

I don't get this comment, I never said he wanted to be TE. I just said those (not me) who think he was a TE in high school is because his rivals.com account listed him as a TE. Also, as noted above, I realized I was probably wrong about him playing a couple snaps in Tyrods final year, but you can blame a fan who sees a 6"'6" guy lining up not being OL

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

where are you getting your info dude? Logan said multiple time he did NOT want to play QB during his recruitment. He specifically stated he wanted to play at WR or TE.

HERE

Thomas played quarterback on offense for his team, mainly because he's the best athlete in the program. This upcoming season he'll also play quarterback but in college he wants to catch the ball rather than pass it.

"I would rather be a wide receiver than a tight end but everyone wants me at tight end so that's what I'll play," he said. "They all talk about slotting me out and getting me the ball a lot anyhow so it's no big deal."

HERE

But Thomas didn't always envision himself as the man behind center.

"Growing up, I've always been told, I need to play quarterback, I need to play quarterback," Thomas said.

"I knew I could play it, I knew I could lead the team. I just kind of didn't want to because I grew up picturing myself catching the ball instead of throwing it."

But he continued to hear the same thing from those around him: You need to play quarterback.

Still, when he committed to Virginia Tech in November of 2008, he did so as a hybrid receiver/tight end, and coaches told him he had a good chance of seeing significant playing time as a freshman.

HERE

On the football field, he played receiver until moving to quarterback his final two years, earning state Player of the Year honors as a senior and leading his team to the championship game, a 50–46 loss in which he threw four touchdowns.

Still, he considered his best path in college to be at tight end or H-back, going so far as to eliminate any school that recruited him solely as a quarterback. Virginia Tech obliged, getting him to sign in February 2009.

read that last one again. He eliminated schools that were recruiting him as QB because he expressly wanted to not be QB. And VT recruited him as TE to get his commitment.

Duh. Typo. I think faster than I type (neither of which I do particularly quickly...or well, so I've been told).

Should have been "He NEVER said he wanted to be a QB...until about a minute into fall practice". Obviously a little hyperbole, but it didn't take much arm twisting to get him to switch.

I'll leave the post as is though, so your comments will make sense.

FWIW, VT lied. They knew all along what they were going to try to do with him. Anyone who thinks that they just willy-nilly asked him to throw a few passes as a curiosity that first week of practice must also believe in the Easter Bunny. And you can bet VT weren't the only ones who lied.

"In the spring before Thomas came to Tech (11-2), O'Cain studied film of Thomas throwing the ball at Brookville, where he had over 3,600 yards of total offense in his final two seasons. O'Cain saw a few things that caught his attention, enough to bring Thomas in as a quarterback in Aug. '09."

Tight End Logan Thomas people must also think Kam Chancellor was is a QB not a DB

LT played QB in high school at least his senior year. I watched him demolish my old high school! He threw a couple of the prettiest deep balls I've ever seen in a high school game. I'm not sure about all the TE stuff but from what I've seen he could of played just about any position he wanted!!

That's starting to eat away at me a little bit

I've said all along that this QB situation is going to be their downfall. Which ever QB is on the field will have to be looking over their shoulder every time they throw an incompletion or an interception, and they're going to be starting the season off against the best schemer in the game. Foster is going to have Urban second guessing his decision by the 2nd quarter.

I hope.

I'm not too worried about who they have as their QB. They are still going to run their offense to the best of their ability.

I figure all three are going to play for an OSU. They lose one on the first snap of the game as Andrew M gets his first sack of the season. Second Quarter they lose Miller to reinjury, and are forced to play Barrett against Bud Foster again...

IMO them having a QB controversy is a good thing for us! Like errbody said above pressure to play well and on every play will be immense. I can't wait for that 1st interception and LANE to errrupt with noise! Talk about rattling a QB and his confidence..

I bet Bud is licking his chops for this game and we all know he loves to throw something new in every game! If lefty can get the offense going boy this could be a great year!

or reversely bud has 3 qbs to prepare for as they have pretty different styles, strengths and weakeness...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Based on style of play, I think we should be rooting for Braxton to win the job. Really anyone but Cardale

True Statement..sadly I doubt Braxton would last 2 Qtr's getting crushed by Dadi, Maddy, Ekanem, Marshal ect ect.

Not sure there is any more pressure to play well on every down with a great backup than normal. The pressure is there anyway, and all 3 have game experience to help learn how to deal with it.

While I think it will be a great game and relatively close OSU is not the same team you played last season. Meyer is much more confident in his players and will be far less conservative this time around. You guys will be healthy as well so I expect you to be better than your performance last season as well; but I doubt you'll be able to bring the same type of defense as last year and be successful. I expect us to attack your secondary if you focus on the running game; if not, I suspect UM will pound the ball on the ground. That said, I am looking forward to the game, and see us as a 10 - 14 pt favorite.

I don't see OSU's rushing attack being significantly more effective than last years, unless a RB starts shedding tacklers left and right. Tech's defensive line more than held their own against OSU's oline last year, and the entire unit returns. Schematically, Foster will throw however many bodies is necessary to stop Urban Meyer's rushing attack.

The only thing that worries me is if the passing game starts connecting against man coverage. The safeties will be new starters at that position, so there are opportunities for explosive plays down the field.

Agreed with your first paragraph, but to play devil's advocate, their O line will also probably be in better shape, and Zeke could probably shed some tackles.

Oh they'll definitely have the talent at RB to break things open. They'll have to, regardless of how good Urban Meyer can scheme his offense, he'll always have a numbers problem in the box and on the edge when playing against Foster. Inevitably he'll have to throw the ball to try and win it through the air.

Hopefully Tech's offense gives Foster's unit enough breathing space that a breakdown or two in coverage doesn't cost Tech the game.

It was pretty good at the end of the year, with Elliot and Jones. When we played you we had a new starter at QB and RB and our line was a mess. By the end of the season, things had jelled and Meyer could run a more aggressive playbook because he knew what they could accomplish. That's not to say you can't stop our running game, but it will be a lot harder to do this year than last.

I agree. While we lost our best deep threat we are still half way decent at WR and TE so we should be able to attack you through the air effectively. Jones has shown himself to have a cannon as well as able to hit receivers on the money; and JT is as good at passing and maybe better at his reads but less of bruising runner. Miller, if he is healthy, adds a whole new dimension to the run game; although I would expect him to play WR or H back so as not to risk reinsuring his arm.

We'll be a lot more effective at passing and running than we were last year at the start of the season so I expect a much more varied offensive scheme against you.

This quote applied to us too. While obviously after the game our seasons went very different ways, there was a good amount of youth on our side too. I also know the match of all is Urban vs. Bud, but our offense did enough to win that game too. If Brewer wins the job he will have a ton more experience in the system then he did last year in the game with a year older WR, TE, and RB corp. Just to put it all in perspective, basically all of our skill positions were new starters in that game last year (Brewer, Juice, Shai, Bucky, Ford, Philips). As much as we looked like a dumpster fire on O at times last season, your DC is going to have a bigger challenge than he did last year.

I don't doubt that as your team is also more experienced; and will be healthy unlike you were last season as the season wore on. It will be interesting to see what Fickle, Ash and company do against you guys. It should be a real battle in the trenches. If you guys can't contain Bosa it'll be a long night for your QB.

Knowledge is Good - Emil Faber

Bosa was pretty uncontainable last year and I expect that again this year. The only way we got around that last year is Brewer made some great plays after being flushed outside the pocket. I don't know if that can be counted on again, but hopefully with Bennett being gone, we can throw some more help to our RT against Bosa.

Or maybe we'll try the Clowney approach and not bother blocking him, and instead just running every play away from him

I expect a great game and closer than the line. I expect you all will be favored by 14 or so, as you should be, but its going to be a battle.

We may well have this problem in a couple years. If Ford and Durkin stick it out, with Lawson coming in, 2016 and 17 are going to be a dogfight at QB. Durkin has just turned 20 and Ford is still 19, still a lot of time to improve.

The problem we will have is a problem most schools have, picking a QB from the ones they have even if they are all pretty good. It is different when you have 3 guys that will all be immediate Heisman contenders if they are they starters, all tested, and all proven winning track records.

Id rather face Barrett again I think. Miller's running ability worries me and Jones is a great overall QB who will be hard to bring down. However, like was said above, having all 3 may be their biggest weakness.

I will be very interested to see how much the Vegas line fluctuates (if any) from now, to a starter being named, to up until game day.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

If you have 3 Qb's you have no QB's...

As much as they all say they are supportive of each other, I am sure they all want to be on the field.
It will be VERY hard for any of the three to sit on the bench.

VHokie

I'm not sure it's much of a carousel so much as it's a podium where everyone got first. Their QB depth is absurd. I can't say I've ever seen that much depth at QB.
