Great analysis of the situation, Andy. I wish him all well in his future endeavors.

very astute article. Wish only the best for Andrew. Loved how he has handled himself from being a recruit to now. Hope he finds the best place for him to get a shot at his dream.

Andy, technical question out of curiosity. When you seek comment from a player in a situation like this, do you have the ability to go straight to him, or do you have to go through the school to seek a statement?

"Exit light..."

He's not a part of the program anymore. I just called his number.

Follow up question, how forthcoming are players to provide you with contact information and talk when they are allowed?

Depends. You have to remember, a lot of these guys are still looking to go elsewhere. It's not like they're going to get in a public spat with their former school. How's that going to look?

Somehow the numbers always work out.

Winky emoji.

Unless Motley takes huge steps into his Sr. year, I fully expect Lawson to take the reins next year.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

The only reason the Hokies ever had a shot with Lawson, who was once a Miami commit, was because Brad Kaaya emerged as a long-term starter with the Hurricanes as a true freshman. Suddenly Lawson's path to the field wasn't so clear, so he looked at his options. Ditto Brewer. He wouldn't be a starting quarterback in Blacksburg right now if things had worked out at Texas Tech.
The same rule probably applies with Ford.

This will be the norm going forward. It seems unfair to some scholarship athletes, but it is how this part of the game is played. Musical chairs.

It's only unfair if unscrupulous coaches overpromise during recruiting. We're offering a scholarship and the chance to compete for playing time. As long as QB recruits know coming in that nothing is promised, we have nothing to feel bad about.

Of course though, we've seen how injuries can deplete our back field. OSU showed why it's important to have a full stable of QBs.

It would be nice not having worry about putting a QB in the game like w hat we had to do with Nick Sorenson back in 97 or 98.

Always enjoy remembering Nick Sorenson. Guy was like a Swiss Army Knife, lotta useful tools in one package.

Totally agree with the point made, though. You need multiple backups at QB, and they need to be invested in every practice and game, as much as is practically possible. Injuries and other life problems can cause unpredictable attrition.

Good analysis. I got something out of it.

Seems the VT QB core just went from pretty strong to a little vulnerable, though. May help with recruiting in the upcoming class.
