Wrestling Will Send All 10 to NCAAs

The NCAA revealed the 197 pound qualifiers a few minutes after 5:00 today. Derrick Borlie's name was on the list, meaning he received an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Derrick was the only Hokie wrestler who needed an at large bid, as the rest of the team qualified automatically at the ACC Tournament.

This is the first time in school history that all ten wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The tournament is Thursday March 21 - Saturday March 23 in Des Moines, Iowa. It will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.

How often do teams send all of their wrestlers?

Rarely

Only 5 teams sent all 10 wrestlers to this years NCAA Tournament. And wrestling powerhouse, Iowa, was not one of them.

Phillip

I need to pass this info along

to my spouse, an Iowa grad.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Pass and enjoy.

Team Scoring

How does Team scoring work in Nationals since most teams send different amount of players? Will it basically come down to those 5 or so schools that send all 10 or is it basically individual scoring from here on out?

Again

*I edited this comment because I screwed up. I forgot that college and H.S. tournament are different.

I explained this for Slicktrip on twitter, but I will do it again in case the rest of you are curious. Scoring in a wrestling tournament works like this, you get a point for advancing each round in the championship round and a half of a point for advancing in the consolation round. You also get a certain number of points for placing 1-8, 16 points for 1st, 3 points for 8th.

The reason it's hard to say how many points you will get per round is because of bonus points. If you win a match by a decision (7 point margin or less) all you will get are advancement point. If you win by major decision (8-14 point margin), technical fall ( 15 point margin), or pin, you will receive bonus points.

Basically the more wrestlers you have at the tournament, the better chance you have a placing high. The most wrestlers that advance the furthest for their team will usually do the best.

Like I said, those are not exact numbers, but hopefully it helps you understand tournament scoring a little better.

Phillip

That's a solid Cliff-Notes version of team scoring. Turkey leg for you, sir.

All Americans

Out of the 10 we are sending, I can see 3 to 5 making All-American and possibly 1-2 champions. They just have to be focused and ready to wrestle their asses off. Coach Dresser will have them ready, they just have to execute.

So most points yield the team natty?

Yep.

Phillip

I see us placing top 8

Garnett and Yates are seniors who could make a run for the title. I understand that wrestling is a sport that many people don't watch. If you have downtime this weekend you should give it a shot. Espn3 should have a camera on every match.

Edit: Dong is also a senior looking to place high

Agreed

Phillip

I shouldve said NEXT weekend, not this weekend.

I actually looked

I looked for like 5 whole minutes for the stream. That's five minutes of my life I can never get back, and five minutes you owe me.

Correct

You couldn't me more right. I was extremely disappointed. I'll try to get those five minutes back to you, but I wouldn't count on it.

Phillip

Ahh, Jesse Dong. One of the great names of wrestling.
