"Stick It In" Won't Return to Lane Stadium in 2015

The Virginia Tech Drumline's cadence remains benched.

The return of "Stick It In" has been teased, but don't expect the Lane Stadium favorite to be performed by The Virginia Tech Drumline this football season. In an interview with Andy Bitter, Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock made it clear the Hokies' red zone anthem will remain retired.

AB: So you're still not bringing back "Stick it in"?

WB: I'm not going to do that. No. Jim [Weaver] and Dr. [Charles] Steger, they changed that for a reason and I have too much respect for them on that. But I do enjoy the drum cadence. I understand why people like the cheer. I enjoyed the cadence and the tradition when I came as a fan and a visiting team administrator, but it just wasn't the right thing for some people. And I'm not going to bring it back.

For the foreseeable future, it seems YouTube will be the only place to enjoy "Stick It In".

Hey look... the 'nothing better to do with their lives than tell others how to act' finally got a win this week.

Ain't that the truth

Leg for the gif and appropriate interwebs overreaction.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

...and now I want to watch Always Sunny.

Seems to two go hand in hand

Technically only the MVs are banned from playing it...

GOOD FOR WHIT! The cheer is stupid, sophomoric, and embarrassing.

Soooo your saying it's perfect for college students to say at a sporting event?

Edit: upvoting 1872, not because I agree but opinions don't deserve downvotes in most cases.

I'll be damned if there is anything sophomoric associated with 18-20 year old kids playing a game!

Yes, how dare anyone engage in anything so puerile! Football is a serious business, meant to be played by and for respectable ladies and gentleman! This is also why we need a strict mandatory dress code for games!

...so only sophomores can do it?

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I don't think the cheer was stupid. Infectious drum beat and a clever double entendre, definitely not stupid. Sophomoric? Well, yeah, maybe, I guess. Embarrassing? Yeah, sometimes I guess I could see someone might feel that way. But it was FUN, and it was ours. I can live without it, but I'll miss it nonetheless.

It was ours. That to me is enough to want it back.

Darn that Whit!

Always trying to class up the place.

I say can him! Nice try Whit, good luck in your next endeavor..

Had a good conversation with a young alum who was there when SII was banned. She said the worst part was arguably how it was done. Basically, the administration treated students like children who were being put in time-out. Yeah, some people were upset, so get rid of the chant. But at least let the students be a part of it. Let the students have a competition for a new cheer. That's how we got "Hokie" in the first place. If you want to change things, treat the students like adults and invite them to be a part of the change.

^ This. 100% this. I said something similar a while back. Whit loves fan/student engagement, so let's have a competition for a new cheer to go with the cadence. Few people remember or try to do "Stick It In" any more, so the new cheer could take hold. Winner gets a pair of free season tickets or something.

"Exit light..."

That's a thought. I tweeted it at Whit earlier, but I suppose a email or two wouldn't hurt.

Yeah if the can still do the drum cadence and have the MV's say and do something else I don't think the few in the crowd that actually know stick it in will overtake everyone and make it stick it in. That is a great cadence. Even Whit admitted to it.

Whoa Whoa Whoa Stuff it where the sun don't shine..Now this is harmless in late afternoon games. Both end zones are in the shade. Its a no brainer at night. It will have to be banned for noon starts! Really what happened to the good old college rebellion! Rock and Roll has gotten soft. That is the problem. I don't expect anyone under 40 to understand this. Is it game time?

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Well, it's certainly after 5 PM on a Friday.

My 2 cents.. The only way that it's offensive is if you have a twisted mind that is thinking perversely. The chant is what it is, it's saying stick the damn ball into the endzone. I guess I would understand if the cheerleaders were making perverted movements or something like that..

While we are at it we should stop doing the national anthem and take down the fl...ok I'll stop...

The only way that it's offensive is if you have a twisted mind that is thinking perversely

And by that definition you cannot be offended by said meaning, because you yourself are thinking it.

As someone who's never attended a game at Lane [hold me :'( ] ...I don't necessarily find "stick it in" offensive, given the context.

..BUT...I can see how it could get not so family friendly on game day... Bunch of hyped up college kids..

Either way, this is kind of disappointing.

Fuck Matt Ryan. It's somehow his fault.

Yeah, I'll jump on that bandwagon.

It's Matt Ryan's fault! Fuck that guy!!!!!!!!!!!! !

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I read it more as he's not going to bring it back, but he's also not going to bring the hammer down if it slips out every once in a while.

He probably doesn't care too strongly, but since he's the guy immediately after the guy that banned it, he doesn't want to step on too many toes.

This. What other decision do we honestly expect he could have made?

His goals have been to improve attendance at Lane to sell tickets, part of that is getting more families(we already have one of the largest by % of seats, student sections in the nation).

By just saying he is respecting the previous decision he doesnt say he would have banned it at the time, just that it isnt a priority, and that he has bigger battles to fight.

How about we just score from more than 20 yards out every time...problem solved.

Onward and upward

This would give me serious wowsers in my trousers.

Wait, now. Isn't that the reason stick it in is in such trouble in the first place?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I miss it so much. It wouldn't be a problem if it didn't include the pelvic thrust motion that everyone did along to the beat.

Touchdown Tech!!!

That's what got it banned. Is there any doubt that this would also happen again?

The drum beat is cool and there would be no complaints if you didnt have thousands of people (students mainly) who can barely stand up and are too drunk to even know whats going on in the game, doing pelvic thrusts at the drop of said beat. It is right there with the wave as far as the annoying factor. I am far from a stick in the mud, and am probably have been considered by many an alchy myself. But, this behavior is what led to the demise of stick it in. It got to the point I dreaded it being played, seemed like some people were more excited to do that jig than see the team score a TD.

Bill Roth, that is something to truly miss. Or Tyrod Taylor, Bryan Randall, Xavier Adibi, Danny Coale, Eddie Royal or Brandon Flowers

"Stick intha Mud! Stick intha Mud! Stick intha Mud!"?

So as we all know the term Hoki[e] was a product of a student contest. I think in this instance a poll would be a more efficient method to the first part of my proposal.

Part 1: Have the MV percussion write 4 red zone cadences. Heck, they can write 20 and let MV leadership and Dave McKee pick 4. Dave's a drummer, he knows what's up. Have them record the best 4 cadences and post them to an online poll through hokiesports or whatever online avenue is best. We then have a new 8 measure drum cadence that is only played in the red zone that is a fan favorite.

Part 2: Have a student contest just like the good old days of OM Stull for a new cheer to go with the new cadence. My advice is to not try to imitate Stick It In. Go a new direction, like having the 8 bar cadence apex with the entire stadium screaming HOKIE HOKIE HOKIE HI!

Or scratch part 2 altogether. You don't need a cheer. What you need is an atmosphere boost in the red zone.

Love this idea. It's time to just let the SII chant go. Sure it sucks, but move on. Let the students be involved, and come up with something even better!
