There have been a lot of things happening behind the scenes here. The site update, the new theme and upgraded CMS, bubbled to the surface first. Now there are ads, and there will be more things to come.
Why ads? Money. I'm not trying to get rich, or even make my living off this site, however I'd like to continue to enhance the coverage provided here (more free quality content), while keeping things free of charge. Money will allow me to do that, and I think everyone will like what I have up my sleeve.
I filtered out religious and political ads, so they shouldn't be too obnoxious. However, if you have feedback on the placement or what's showing up, drop it here.

Ads are fine by me! I used to have a deal in high school with a friend of mine - if he gave me a ride home I had to click on 3 ads on the way...
So unless some creepy ones pop up, I'll click on a few extra for ya!

I'm intrigued as to what you have up your sleeve. Personally i think they are subtle enough that they don't affect the site.
Ads don't kill people, pop-ups do. Obviously this community has grown to a point where if there were no revenue stream to offset the cost of everything provided it wouldn't continue to be as great as it is. Plus, now with one click I can refinance a 30yr mortgage!
I am cool with ads. Make whatever revenue you can. I just hope they don't get me flagged on my office computer. This company filters everything for explicit content.
The UNC ad on the sidebar is a little sketch though. As long as it isn't UVA I am cool with it.
Thanks for the support y'all. The response has been an overwhelming, "get money," which I appreciate, but I just want to make it clear that the revenue the ads bring in is going to be reinvested back into the site. I want our coverage of the 2013 season to be second to none.
The content of this site is already second to none Joe. There currently isn't another Hokie blog that is on par with the content and community on this site. Bravo to you for putting this all together and staying with it as I know it is a large commitment.
All we ask is that you keep it running! Thank you, no other Hokie blog/forum is close in comparison!
Have you and the staff ever considered selling t-shirts or other merchandise as a site? I'm sure a lot of the regular readers would buy a shirt or two if they had some content spawned from the site. I know you couldn't have VT logos all over the place, but some fun blog humor (I'm thinking LOLUVA, horse on a treadmill, other things we love around here) might be a nice alternative to the orange/maroon effect shirts for alumni, or just another shirt for us undergrads who don't have enough O&M already. Plus you have a snazzy new logo you could throw on.
Dunno if you or anyone else on the staff would be interested in this, just another money idea.
T-Shirts are coming, I'm looking for the most affordable options, and finalizing some graphics. I know change can be painful, but I think everyone is going to like the new stuff that's going to start popping up.

Doing course request this week, I could take a night lab either on Tuesday or Thursday. My first thought was: 'I can't do Thursday, I'd have to skip class for the Thursday night game!" My second thought was: "shit."
I wonder if my post weeks ago about ads influenced this at all.
Ads has always been in the plans, bringing in money is the only way to make the site better. However, I had to put everything together the right way which took some time.

as so many have said tkp has grown so much i think the adds arent a bad idea. please keep up the good work tkp is an incredible site
Bar none the best coverage/fact-checking/shenanigan site for Hokie sports, at least football. Maybe this is the reason I'm taking 6 years to graduate? Or maybe it's just to hang around for too many football seasons. I have no problem with the ads, like most TKPers. I say screw UNC's MBA program, anyway.
I think the ad's make the site look big time to me and the money cant hurt well done indeed.
All I have to say is as long as my kids can look over my shoulder while I am on the site it'll be ok. No tasteless ads please.
