I know it never feels good to lose any player on the team unless they had disciplinary/attitude issues, especially not a highly-touted 4* recruit pursued by the likes of Alabama. However, and unfortunately, it didn't seem like Holland was making quick moves up the depth chart as we all hoped for, switching positions from Rover (I believe?) to Whip and then falling behind Shegog there. Maybe it was an issue of being too small for one and too slow for the other -- I don't really know. But I do know that this loss is more akin to Keihn's absence rather than Reavis'. Y'all remember Nick Dew from a few years back? Sort of reminds me of that situation. Sucks, but we'll be fine.
Edit: to acknowledge that we all could be completely jumping the gun on this random rumor, and I'd be happy to have him still on the team :). He is, afterall, still just a RS-Fr.

Fisher was recruited as a DB, too. He was a safety (though he did play around the LOS a lot in HS and at FUMA). Got shifted around though, primarily due to his size, IIRC. Not sure why he hasn't been able to crack the depth chart yet, but it seems to me that his skills leave him in between a lot of positions. Super athletic, may not fit in the scheme?

Im excited about the fact that he has grown about 3 inches since joining tech. I hope he makes the grade and get bigger. its simply a matter of time before he makes the 2-deep as a hybrid OLB/safety.

OK, some info I'm surprised nobody here has posted...according to Mike Barber, Richmond Times article from today, Fisher had been excused from the workout, and Foster said he was dealing with academic issues. "Right now, we're just going to wait through the end of the school semester and just see where he is," Foster said.

Really wish I knew. Just repeated what I read. I suspect there is something here, but we don't know. As usual. You could read it as he had to go and really bone up for a big test, and that would make me think that things are dire enough that they could affect his participation in the fall, but that just shows that I can conjure up hyperbolic conjecture as well as anyone.

I don't think the sky is falling but recruiting is definitely a "what have you done lately" game. CJ Reavis, Holland Fisher and Joel Caleb aren't real positive examples for star recruits out of Richmond who we want at VT. We need to flip the trend and gain some momentum.

Devils advocate: CJ was dismissed from the university. That's not on the football program, and he was in line to be a major contributor. Caleb still has a chance to make a name for himself under a new position coach at a position of need. And while I don't make it a practice to discuss the private lives of players, if it turns out this is truly grades-related, that also has nothing to do with the program.

I agree the situations are unique and there isn't much the football team or coaches could do to change them (from what we know as fans) but all of these situations can still be spun by opposing schools to create a less favorable perception of VT to Richmond area recruits.

Granted. So it's up to our program to make sure good info is put out there regarding the situations of CJ Reavis and Holland Fisher. As for Caleb, let's see what he does with the rest of his career.
The fact that Reavis and Fisher were both positive about VT in their "goodbye" posts plays into our hands here.

I think everything will be fine, but these were the big fish out of Richmond. And just because Reavis was kicked out of school as opposed to kicked off the team doesnt look that much better. Richmond recruiting has not been strong the last year or two, it would have helped if these players could show up on the field.

Haven't heard definitively what his status is. However, despite his recruiting ranking, Fisher wasn't a safety (which I said when I reviewed him coming out of FUMA) and then when the position change was made, he didn't do what he needed to do to add strength in order to be an every down player.

If Payne was passed over on the depth chart on the first day by a freshman who hasnt hit the practice field yet, that says something. I was hoping to see what he would do being an under recruited player and having good size.

refrain from personal attacks towards players and coaches.
You are missing the point of this website if you don't understand why this is wrong. It doesn't matter what verbage you use. This is how rumors start that hurt a program. Sometimes they are valid, sometimes it's complete BS. This is why TKP has these rules. It would be easy for me to say that Marcus Vick got mad at me when I took his french fries at McDonalds. But it's also easy to say that you saw someone too intoxicated at a party or he was over competitive when he played some pickup bball. Either way, this is not the place for comments like that, regardless of their commitment to VT.

I mean maybe he went to a Halloween party dressed as a penis. Maybe he always goes to parties dressed as a penis and people keep asking him "hey, man why you always gotta be such a dick?" because they want to see his other costumes.

eh, play enough ball at McComas and you'll meet a lot of scholarship athletes. Some are certainly more abrasive than others. On the flip side some are notably nicer.

what the heck is going on?!?!?
EDIT:
Ok...so my bad for the neutral zone infraction...if he was "excused" from practice, that's a totally different meaning from "dismissed"....
Oh, boy...VT football sometimes.

Juuuussst when you think....
Dammit.
I still haven't seen this rumor bubble up to somewhere that isn't Hokie#s....
Just sayin...
My sauce isn't on the tweeter mobile... but we will see
"Whats wrong Smeagol?" - Golem
Quiet, he's talking to Precious.
Officially, at least, VT says there's no change to his status with the team. Although I did not see him out there today.
Now I start worrying.
they tagged him all up in the facebook post on the hokies page about him leaving we will see if he responds lol.
Per mile barber he was excused from practice. Can't embed as I'm on mobile
mile barber
That's to distinguish him from Mite Berman...height advantage, you know.

Negative recruiting will spin it as we don't know how to place top 4* and above talent in our defense.
Kendall Fuller is on line one.
Kendal Fuller is a DB. I probably should have said Dline or LB. honesty idc just sucks we get a good top recruit and it doesn't work out.

The Joel Caleb of the defense?
Ironically, Fisher and Caleb played together back at Clover Hill many moons ago
It's unfortunate that VT has never been able to play that card given that no top 100 guys at other schools end up on the short end of the stick...
Well that's just not true
Sarcasm, it'll get after ya.
he has to stay eligible academically to have a chance, he didn't.
So this is still a rumor?? And why would a redshirt freshman leave? Plenty of time to earn a spot
As far as I've seen, it looks like it is. Nothing substantiated
I'm so confused!
Im excited about the fact that he has grown about 3 inches since joining tech. I hope he makes the grade and get bigger. its simply a matter of time before he makes the 2-deep as a hybrid OLB/safety.

Does he mean the summer session, or is he implying Fisher might be in trouble for the fall semester?
Grades are not the best from what i have heard
Really wish I knew. Just repeated what I read. I suspect there is something here, but we don't know. As usual. If grades are a problem , hope he will concentrate on academics and square things. Would hate to lose a promising player to someone like unc.
I went to a neighboring high school and a buddy follows him on Instagram:
Man. Have you ever seen such a cruel summer?
Starting to feel like a poor elderly woman from Rock Ridge.
Have you ever sen such cruelty?
Just makes you want to go out and...
Careful going about that. You never know who's in the next stall...
I love a Blazing saddles reference always a win Boris
I'm guessing stellar academics aren't one of those "talents"
Really? That's twice now where you have had a questionable comment what's the deal? Offseason been a little long?
Just think comments like "taking my talents to..." are inane drivel and an indication that one has no comprehension of their circumstance.
Not a fan of the comment, but I am a fan of the "blur" effect on the comment.
Wow well we are looking better and better to Richmond area prospects.
There are plenty of players from the Richmond area that the coaches can point to.
I don't think the sky is falling but recruiting is definitely a "what have you done lately" game. CJ Reavis, Holland Fisher and Joel Caleb aren't real positive examples for star recruits out of Richmond who we want at VT. We need to flip the trend and gain some momentum.

Never added weight, never learned any position, and couldn't make the grades to stay. None of that is on VT.

AB #sources tell him Fisher and Payne "Still" part of the team.
What's the rumor with Payne?
Edit: Nevermind. I saw the tweets. Academics.
Not sure for how long.
I don't like the sound of that...
I'll take until August 23rd for 800 Alex.
(Fall semester begins August 24th)
...his name is Andy

Payne was always a dick when he played pickup basketball at McComas so I'm fine with it...just saying...
http://www.thekeyplay.com/community-guidelines
are facts attacks? or is his choice of words "dick" instead of "rude" the attack part of the equation here?

As are most 18-22 year olds that are put in competitive situations.
Can confirm.
Source: am 22 year old.

Damn, I was looking forward to Bud's D on a whole new level
Just fix your "user" tackles you're good. But damn, puts it in perspective.
That was controller in the center, sim after kickoff every down played in action. now gonna have to re do it for all the changes on both teams
Fair enough, but I'll be able to sleep tonight knowing that Bosa isn't playing.
Well I would hope the actual score is better than what's on the screen there.
Looks like your secondary was getting beat a lot.
