2013 Spring Practice: First Open Scrimmage

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

It's good to see Logan Thomas back under center. [HokieSports.com]

This is an open thread for now, but Brian, Mike, and Andrew are at the game and this post will be updated once the scrimmage is over. If you're at the scrimmage, take advantage of our mobile redesign and leave any comments below.

The takes from Brian, Mike, and Andrew follow. Without the benefit of the film, these open scrimmages are hard to cover. My hope is three sets of eyes provide a good feel for what happened in Lane today.

Scrimmage #1 Notes by Brian Marcolini (marcolini11)

There are always a few things that stand out in a scrimmage that carry on into the regular season. For example, last spring Dadi Nicolas looked like a star on the third team. I mean he couldn’t be blocked. I thought that it was just because he was playing against a freshman tackle...but there just becomes a point in time where it is OBVIOUS that a guy is good, no matter who he’s lined up against. A couple people that added to their "Nicolas Stock":

  • Kyshon Jarrett (punt returner): I was screaming at Frank the entire year (along with most of the Hokie population) to just put Jarrett back there all by himself. Take the bubble wrap off, if you will. In the limited amount of punts practiced, Kyshon could have taken two back for scores, had they not been blown dead. He could be the most dangerous punt returner since Eddie Royal.
  • Trey Edmunds: Again, not a surprise. Everyone knows that Edmunds will be very good. Remember when Tech and Bama played in 2009, and Ryan Williams just looked like he belonged on the field with those Bama defenders? He was only a freshman, and we didn’t know how good he was going to be, but he still looked like he belonged on the same field. I think Edmunds will look that way this year.
  • Brandon Facyson: He got beat once or twice today, but let’s just say I’m buying Facyson stock. He looks like he can be the next lockdown corner if his development continues. He will probably give up a big play this season and people will be down on him, but don’t be shocked if he becomes the nickel corner by the end of the year.

I’m writing a piece on the offensive line, so I won’t step on that, but let’s just say some people had good days (Shuman and Gibson in particular), others had bad days, and others had terrible days. We’ll break into that tomorrow.

Joshua Stanford was targeted a ton by Thomas, while getting first team reps. If I had to guess, Stanford will see the field a lot, with Coles and Knowles. Excited to see more of him on Saturday.

The d-line looked like their usual self. Derrick Hopkins was having his way with the second team guards, and Kris Harley (who should be in the Nicolas Stock list) did extremely well against the first team.

Didn’t watch a lot of Tariq Edwards, but it was really great to see him back there. If he can go full speed, the linebackers will be in great shape.

Despite what I said about Facyson, the defense will be at a big disadvantage until Exum can come back (who, by the way, looked like he was about to explode while standing on the sidelines). Facyson, Donaldven Manning and Donovan Riley all took turns lining up opposite Kyle Fuller and all had their ups and downs. Manning looked like he had the best day of the three in terms of not giving up big plays, but he didn’t make any plays either. We better hope one of those three grows up quickly, because I HATE relying exclusively on a true freshman corner arriving in the summer (Kendall Fuller).

Interesting note that Carlis Parker took some third team snaps at receiver, although he was in his yellow quarterback jersey. Does this mean he isn’t Loeffler’s type of guy? Is he too good of an athlete to be buried on the depth chart? Only time will tell, but something tells me that he won’t be listed at quarterback much longer.

Disappointed that we didn’t see Brendan Motley at all today. I wanted to see how his transition to college quarterback was taking form.

One final thought: DJ Coles intrigues me. He still has great hands, but has bulked up a little bit while rehabbing from his knee injury, which was obvious in terms of his explosiveness off the line. The offense used him in a lot of different ways, including motioning down onto the line of scrimmage as a second tight end or H-Back, and he was effective as both a receiver and a blocker (even took Edwards for a ride on a run play).

Spring Scrimmage Observations by Mike Yourshaw (mikey4vt)

Offense

The offensive line is a major work in progress. The pieces are there, but the guys are going to have to come a long way from where they are. They didn’t get too much push, and a lot of times were blown up (Matt Arkema and Nick Acree got chewed out by Grimes). We have to remember they’ve practiced in a new system for only two weeks, and the depth chart is nowhere near set. I’m confident they’ll get better.

It’s purely zone blocking. This made me happy to see after switching blocking schemes every series last year. We aren’t going to see a lot of huge gains, that’s not the point of zone blocking. Expect us to gain 3-6 yards on most carries, but each run slowly gets closer to the end zone. In pass pro, the pocket collapsed often, which caused Logan Thomas and the other quarterbacks to throw off their back foot.

The majority of run plays were zone leads. There were two fullback sets as well as a fullback and H-Back lined up in the backfield for the zone leads. D.J. Coles lined up at H-Back a lot in this formation, and on play-actions he ran routes into the flat.

There was way too much pre-snap motion for my liking. Yes, it’s nice to get the defense off-balance, but it’s not needed every play. I saw shotgun to I-formation with the tailback starting at receiver (never ran a play with the back at receiver, so the defense didn’t have to honor it) as well as countless receiver motions.

Logan looked…decent. I didn’t see any passes that sailed or skipped off of the ground, but he wasn’t exactly "accurate". At the beginning of the scrimmage he looked a little bit flustered but calmed down as the scrimmage went on, throwing a few absolutely beautiful balls. He still had a tendency to stare down receivers, which resulted in two interceptions. On his first interception the center was pushed back into him causing him to throw off his back foot. The ball was underthrown and in the air forever, so Der’Woune Greene had time to pick it off. The second was Kyle Fuller reading Logan's eyes and getting in front of Josh Stanford. He did connect with D.J. Coles on a nice deep ball, and was a foot too long on a deep ball to Stanford.

Trey Edmunds looks like a man’s man at running back. He’s built solid, and has a burst and quickness similar to J.C. Coleman. That’s pretty impressive when you’re 6-1, 215. I didn’t notice him running with the ones today, but when he was in, he almost always got positive yardage. He broke around a 15-yard run behind the #2 o-line against the #1 defense.

J.C. Coleman got all of his reps with the ones. He was very shifty and was able to cut and fit through some tiny seams. There were yards after contact, and he was able to push the pile one time, something we didn’t see much last year. To me, he looks like a change of pace back with Trey as the main guy. Michael Holmes got reps with the ones and twos, and looked more explosive than last year. At times he did look tentative and he fumbled once.

The wide receiver routes looked quite a bit different from last year. There were more routes from 10-25 yards compared to previous seasons. I saw a lot of curls and out routes. The receivers dropped a lot of balls today. Some were right on the numbers, others were in the hands, but they all were unacceptable to drop. Josh Stanford looked excellent with his routes, but did have a few drops. Knowles is still a burner, and was able to come back and make the catch on an underthrown ball from Thomas. It looks like the top receivers so far are Coles, Stanford, Asante, and Knowles, but it’s clear the competition is still wide open.

Defense

Woody Baron looks like he’s in position to take the #4 defensive tackle spot. Baron and Kris Harley rotated in and out of the tackle spots with the ones, and were the starters with the #2 defense. Baron looked good in his time on the field, and on a pass rush he had a nice spin move and got to Leal for the sack.

The defensive line wreaked havoc on the offense. James Gayle did whatever he wanted out there, and got to the quarterback countless times. Dadi Nicolas was the most notable end behind Gayle. He blew by Laurence Gibson for a sack on one play and contained Michael Holmes’ (blew up Holmes and forced a fumble) cutback on an inside zone.

The defense looked like they knew the offense was going to run on every play. It looked like the 4-4 scheme for the majority of the day, and they sent about 9 guys on every run.

Brandon Facyson surprised me. For only enrolling in January, he was one of the more impressive defensive backs. He did let Stanford get by for one long gain, but he was glued to him for much of the day. Detrick Bonner did well at free safety. He chased down receivers and didn’t allow any gains over the top.

Special Teams

A.J. Hughes' two punts were absolutely beautiful. Each had excellent hang-time and they were long.

Kysheon Jarrett looked explosive on his two punt returns.

The scrimmage today was what most of us expected. The offense is still learning, and the defense looks outstanding (even with Jack Tyler missing the scrimmage for class).

First Open Scrimmage Thoughts by Andrew Berlin (tonkaberlin)

I am satisfied with everything I saw at the scrimmage today. Things are exactly where I expect them to be, given injuries, new players, new coaches, etc. The main feeling I got as I walked away is that these new coaches have not made any decisions on who the starters will be, and every player is competing to earn the starting job. I concentrated on the offensive side of the ball and here are my takes:

The running back competition is the position I was most curious about. Edmunds looked very strong and confident from what I saw. He ran hard and attacked without hesitation, fighting for yards after contact. J.C. Coleman seemed too small to make plays through contact, and projects to be an impact player in the open field, something Loeffler will have to scheme for. I love the kid's heart, but aside from Duke I just haven't seen big things from him yet between the tackles. He may be listed as #1 right now, but from what I saw today, Edmunds and Holmes were the better backs. Edmunds didn't get as many touches as I'd have liked, but he looked great when he did. Holmes looked good on the first team offense vs second team defense, but struggled and hesitated against the first team defense. Still, he looked better than I saw from him all season last year.

As for the receivers, Asante and Stanford were targeted the most. Both struggled at times to actually catch the football, but Asante had a great 8 yard gain in the red zone on a screen pass. So hopefully we can have some wide receiver screens that actually work next season. Coles and Knowles weren't targeted much, but each had an incredible long catch-and-run, with Coles using his strength to break free of some defenders, and Knowles using his speed. I got the feeling that Coles and Knowles have proven themselves in these practices so far and the coaches were just trying to evaluate Asante/Stanford. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to wide receiver blocking.

I'm no expert on line play, and I only have one note where "#63 [Laurence Gibson] missed block" resulting in Thomas being sacked. He whiffed entirely on the block, unfortunately. So obviously there are still kinks to work out on the offensive line, but that doesn't concern me very much at this point. I'm sure others who have a lot more knowledge on offensive line play can comment further. The tight ends were targeted a few times if I recall correctly, but I only have one Ryan Malleck reception in my notes.

Finally, Logan Thomas looks like he has been improving. At first, he was very shaky and looked like 2012 Logan Thomas, but after the first few passes, he calmed down and started making much more accurate passes (minus the single awkward back-foot lob that was an interception as soon as it left his hand). His bombs to Knowles and Coles were beautiful (though he floated the one to Coles just a tiny bit more than I would have liked) and he almost had at least one more that Stanford very nearly came up with (slightly overthrow into the end zone). His short passes looked less forced, the play-action was good enough to fool me, and his movements didn't look terribly exaggerated. He showed poise in the pocket and patience when he was scrambling. I really, really like what Loeffler has been teaching him. You guys are going to like what you see in a few weeks.

So like I said, I saw what I had hoped to see today. The offense is making strides, but is far from perfect just yet. Personnel is nowhere near finalized, but everyone looks improved from last season. I'm still slightly worried about how our secondary fared today, but I honestly was entirely focused on offensive play (though it was impossible to not notice how the first team defense had its way with the second team offense). Evaluating scrimmages is always a tough task, but I think today's was a success.

Comments

I'm currently sitting in class. Can't wait to get out of here and hopefully catch the tail end of the scrimmage.

Hyping up Hokie Nation one video at a time.

Any tight end production?

Ryan Mallack just caught a short pass from LT

Logan just.hit Knowles for 2 long passes

Well, we always knew he was a deep threat. His first college reception was that TD against GT!

Trey Edmunds was definitely one of the biggest bright spots on offense. Logan looked sloppy at times

all maroon everything

Yeah, Logan looked a little hit-or-miss sometimes. Definitely had some pretty throws though. He looks like he trusts DJ a whole heck of a lot.

Anyone know what was up with Jack Tyler? Didn't see him out on the field today.

It looked like he was running the chains in green on the far sideline

Thought that mighta been him, couldn't be sure. Wonder why he was in green.

I heard that Frank said Tyler missed the scrimmage bc he had class

More fans at today's open scrimmage than UVA had fans at their spring game.

I wasn't there, but it's a fair assumption.

Josh Stanford was impressive. Looked very smooth running routes, and he is definitely one of Logan's favorite targets, if not his number 1. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he led the team in receptions this year.

YES. Stanford made me very happy today. Liked his effort and execution. If he had caught that one he laid out for, today woulda been perfect.

this would be great we need a solid go to reciever. I've only heard good things abt him since his recruitment

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

it looked like a spring scrimmage should, lots of positives but a few lapses in concentration. What I was most impressed with was the up-tempo pace and intensity in which plays were executed. they were snapping the ball with about 18-15 seconds left on the play clock.

Just saw a few short highlights on HokieSports with the Scot Loefler interview. Quick comments:

DJ Coles is playing like he wants to physically harm everyone. Can't wait to see him play.
Trey Edmunds hits the hole like a bad man.
Derick Hopkins is built like a cannonball, and gets out of his stance like he got fired out of a cannon. I think he's our best DLinemen.
I would not be surprised if Trey Edmunds and Michael Holmes are our #1 and #2 RBs, with JC and Mangus as scat backs.

what did you think of Loeffler's comments regarding RB's and TE's. He did not mention any specific names. I saw some one wrote that Holmes and JCC got most of the reps with first team. Loeffler also said tight end is by committee right now. In the highlights of the 1's it looked like Malleck was out there with Logan under center.

What TE got most of the reps with the 1's? and who with the 2's?

I was impressed overall with the offence and schemes they were presenting. Little sloppy at points, but rome wasn't built in day. at times they were presenting heavy backfields for downhill running and others times logan sat in 5 wide sets, so that was interesting to see maybe a glimpse of what the offence might look like come fall. the zone blocking schemes on running plays looked pretty good by the 1st string, but were exposed sometimes and Grimes let the linemen know when he wasn't pleased with missed assignments. Edmunds was the highlight of the day. his explosiveness made it seem like he was off to the races every time he touched the ball, but had problems on a few plays in pass protection. JC looked really good on passing plays with both blocking in route running. Logan was Logan i guess you would say. one play he looked like everything we want him to be, then the next passing play would remind you of last year at times. You could tell he has been working on his footwork, but the pick he threw towards the endzone had everything to do with his footwork. The defensive line looked really good overall. The defense overall was playing bud like defence; flying around and playing aggressive. I really wasn't able to watch the DBs that much, but that is saturdays plan. Overall it was a good showing and felt like a step forward for the offence.

BOLD PREDICTION:

Michael Holmes outshines logan thomas and contends for acc player of the year next season.

This is me checking "disagree." First, he has to outshine Edmunds.

I don't care who does it but I want to see one running back contending for ACC POTY.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Serious question: what gives anyone any faith in Michael Holmes? His high school film is bleh, he doesn't do anything exceptionally well, and he was pretty average last year. The only thing I can really think of is James Gayle hyping him up that one time and people getting excited about that. Not trying to rag on the guy, but I would be pretty surprised if he ended up with more carries than JC or Edmunds.

If Edmunds doesn't get the starting job for some reason, I expect Holmes to have the majority of the carries next season.

The only reason JC had a higher Yards Per Carry then Holmes last year was because of the Duke game, a game in which JC had 11 more carries then Holmes. Duke was also the worst YPC defense Tech faced all year, so the stats were skewed in JC's favor. If you take just two of Coleman's longest runs of the year away (both against awful Duke) then they have the same YPC. Plus, JC had the advantage of being used more in the only running plays that worked last season, the outside runs.

Holmes has the best vision on the team, he is the second strongest of the RB's behind Edmunds, Holmes doesn't have great speed but he has enough speed to be a top ACC quarterback. He'll contribute if he gets the shot behind a good OL. Last year, he had zero shot. The scheme he was used in (combined with the awful blocking) and his nagging injuries doomed him.

Watch some of the "All snaps of the game" film that billdozer has posted. Whenever he has a hole to run through, he takes care of business.

For example, watch this series vs Cincinnati. This was a very, very rare instance in which Holmes actually had decent blocking. (The drive starts at 18:40, tried to embed it at that time but couldn't get it to work)

-He opens up with a nice outside run, doing a good job of reading the TE's block and bouncing it outside rather then cutting it in.
-The next run is the best one, off some counter action. He hits the right hole, then makes the MLB miss one-on-one, then sets up his blockers very nicely to get some extra yardage.
-Next run is a zone run to the left, he again finds the right hole, puts his foot in the ground and cuts it up. A lack of second-level blocking limits the run to a six yard gain.
-Next run he follows his FB into the hole. The Oline can't seal the nose tackle, and he comes all the way across and gets on Holmes's legs. Holmes's power allows him to take the hit and keep going without his balance for an extra 3 yards. JC Coleman doesn't get that yardage, and instead of 3rd-1, it's probably 3rd-3.
-His next run is for the TD. This is a good one which I think really showcases his value inbetween the tackles. He gets good blocking, but being in the Endzone there aren't the numbers to block everybody. Holmes is going to have to make a play... Which he does. A safety meets Holmes in the hole, and Holmes punishes him. Look at the way the Safety drops to the ground, getting the worse of the exchange. Holmes deals the pain, keeps enough balance to spin, and then lunges backward across the Endzone. JC Coleman doesn't make that run for a TD.

Edmunds may be able to put a drive together like this. Not sure, haven't seen enough of him. But I know Holmes can, and I know that he'll only get better the more carries he gets. Holmes will contribute if he gets good blocking.

Holmes may have hit the holes hard against Cinci, but he didn't do it for the rest of the season. You keep saying that if he has blocking he can produce, the same can be said for JC. He hits the hole with reckless abandon every time and with that mystical blocking actually taking place he has a chance to get a much bigger gain with his speed. Don't mean to sound down on Holmes and I'll absolutely support him whole heartedly if he's in the game, but I think JC is a better option given blocking and the carries.

in Fuller we trust

JC doesn't do well inbetween the tackles, with the exception of the Duke game (the worst rushing Defense on the schedule). He's too slight, gets no push.

I am not selling my stock on Holmes, but I'm not buying more right now either. From what I've seen of him so far this spring, he's running hard. I'm always quick to cite the same plays against Cincy as you whenever people knock him, but that second half was the beginning and end of his highlight film. Late in the year he really struggled to push a pile and gain yards through contact. We saw Edmunds gain tough yards last August behind the 2nd and 3rd team lines against the first team defense.

I'm not totally sold on Coleman either, but give his speed and big play ability he will have a place in the offense. He's small, but he doesn't run away from contact, but he doesn't run through it either.

Also, the tailback competition is only going to get more intense when/if Drew Harris is in town.

Late in the year he apparently struggled through some nagging injuries AND I think the Oline run blocking got worse, not better, as the season progressed. Either because the run scheme was soo terrible that opposing defenses knew what was coming or simply because the teams later in the schedule were of higher quality, I'm not sure.

Is Holmes a future first rounder? No. Is Edmunds? Quite possibly.

I'll have to see what Edmunds can do in a game environment though. He certainly appears to have a higher ceiling.

On the option at 21:16, Holmes does a good job even though he looses about a yard, he gets about 4 yards after contact.

Can Holmes play at JMU right away or would he have to sit out?

If he transferred... he'd be able to play immediately, since he'd be dropping to FCS.

First impressions.

Edmunds may be 'the guy' that carries most of the load, allowing JC to come in with his speed and catch a sleeping defense off guard.

Jack Tyler was missing, I believe he had class.

Stanford was running good solid routes

Im not sure anybody noticed but Kevin Asante laid the hammer on the DB covering Knowles allowing Knowles to pick up 8-10 more yards on a deep catch. I loved that, I want more of that attitude out of our offensive players.

Logan looked okay. He had a good stretch where his throws were on the money, and he was just operating smoothly. He threw 2 picks. One was a bad, bad throw. Late, lofted too much and thrown off his back foot. On the second Im not sure the receiver was even expecting it and it was easy for Fuller to jump the route. Its still early in the Loeffler/Thomas relationship and I expect a lot of progress in the coming months.

Leal looked good when he had time to throw. The 2nd OL couldn't handle the 1st string defense.

Dadi and Gayle were going HAM.

Facyson is gong to be a hell of a player.

To be very blunt:

Scot Loeffler is very loud.
James Gayle is a monster.
Trey Edmunds can ball.

Twitter ===> @PattyLighttt

Hopkins looked good on defense. Had quite a few TFLs/little/no gains. Edmunds was definitely the back of the afternoon. Coles was consistent and looked good. JCC didn't contribute much running, but looked good on passing routes. Holmes looked a lot improved. Gregory wasn't dressed out. McCray is still out with concussion symptoms. Malleck caught a couple passes, nothing too big. Stanford seemed to be the target of the afternoon. He was getting open, but didn't catch a few he should have. The offense overall struggled. Logan threw a few picks, one to Fuller and another on the 2 (can't remember who picked that one). The QB's still aren't getting much time in the pocket, which led to some of Logan's errant throws. Gayle drew some boos after shoving Leal to the ground after a pass attempt. The D looked good though, a lot of pressure up front, which is expected. Overall, a good first open scrimmage. A lot of hustle on both sides of the ball, which has been stressed in practice.

"I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them. So I'm going with God. I'm going with Virginia Tech." -Lee Corso

Okay, I'm going to post several thoughts.

I was at the spring scrimmage from start to finish.

*Edmunds is making the case he is the starter. J.C. got the majority of reps as the presume starters, but it was Edmunds making the big runs.

*Michael Holmes has not been impressive, frustrating me, and he only made one monster run. However, on the next snap, he reverted to east-to-west running which went for a loss. He does not have the explosion to outrun tacklers. I think Shane needs to bury him deep on the depth chart.

*I was very, very impressed with Roddy, the 3rd string quarterback, and if he can add some muscles to his frame, work on his mechanics, I think he could be a quarterback down the road.

*James Gayle is nasty. I mean, as nasty as Judge Dredd meeting The Terminator.

*The secondary are going to go through some growing pains. Logan Thomas got one of them to bite on a pump fake, leaving Stanford wide open for a monstrous gain, and later, Thomas connected with Knowles on a deep ball.

*Logan Thomas had some trouble with deep passes today for two reasons: 1) the receivers were often well-covered, and 2) the receivers had trouble hanging onto his ball.

*Loved seeing Moorehead emphasizing to the receivers they needed to plant their feet before catching the football.

*At one point, Grimes got so P/O at the offensive line for two straight tackle for loss, he poked one of the OL in the chest. He is as intense as advertised. Even Ryan Pugh got animated.

*Scot Loeffler used a lot, I mean a lot, of unbalanced line looks from the I-formation, Ace, and shotgun.

*On the very first snap, they lined up in an empty set out of shotgun before Logan Thomas made a change and they went into an I-form with a flexed H-back, I think.

I think there was two plays where they actually lined up in a full-house formation that actually made gains.

I strongly encourage the TKPers to make it to Saturday's scrimmage.

Lets make Lane Stadium so full that UVa oozes with jealousy.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Saw a few pictures on hokiesports.com, and it looked like there were about as many fans there this evening as LOLUVA had at their spring game. Anyone who was there have an estimate as to numbers?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Anybody know how Caleb looked?

I don't remember him even being targeted. I didn't do a good enough job of watching to tell if he wasn't getting separation or if he was just the 3rd option. I do remember one play with the #2 offense where we ran a bootleg with Leal. Caleb had a post 1 on 1 with Riley (I believe it was Riley) starting on the left side. He didn't give it his full effort unfortunately.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

So, a couple of quick thoughts based on comments and discussions

1) Conte was moved back to right tackle. The Hokies are unique in that they usually line up their best pass rusher (stud end) over the right tackle rather than on the blind side. Conte gave up at least two of the sacks to Gayle, not McLaughlin (although McLaughlin may have struggled in other matchups, we will see soon enough.) As a hole, it isn't suprising that the offensive line struggled. Guys are playing in new positions, with new players next to them. Communication will be a challenge, especially with pass protections. At the same time, all comments indicate that the compete level for the OL was vastly improved. Mental mistakes happen, but it is the plays where it doesn't appear that the violator had the right compete level that really seemed to have set Grimes off. Along that front, reports are that Wang got hurt and Arkema struggled. Who took advantage? Well, my eyes on the ground tell me that Adam Taraschke got a ton of work with the starters at both guard positions. Could he be the suprise of the group?

2) One of the most impressive films for the 2012 recruting class was the highlight reel for Woody Baron. Baron greyshirted after a high school career where he was incredibly productive. I have heard that he isn't athletic enough to play end in college, but at 260 pounds, perhaps too light for tackle. Well, I saw ole number 60 out there with the number 2's next to Kris Harley. Has he moved ahead of Nigel Williams to be the fourth DT in the rotation? Keep an eye on that battle.

3) Fullback really seems to be a flux position. I have seen the Hite kid get a bunch of snaps with the ones, but there have been numbers there that I can't even find on the roster getting snaps with the number 1's. It will be very interesting to see who wins that job, as the inside zone with a fullback lead seems to be a bread and butter play for this staff.

4) It will be awhile before he is a contributer, but I am glad I don't have to tackle Dakota Jackson. That kid is a LOAD at tight end. Every time I see a highlight of him getting hit, I hear loud noises and see DB's bounce off of him.

5) I am looking forward to seeing Brandon Faycson in person. I plan on devoting a significant amount of my spring game analysis on the young defensive backs, and it sounds like he is the guy stepping up.

6) All the highlights from prior scrimmages have two things in common: 1) Josh Stanford gets targeted much more than the other receivers *see the Corey Fuller effect and 2) Trey Edmunds demonstrates speed, sharp cuts, and a knack for taking a two yard run and turning it into a 4-6 yard run. He finishes runs. I really like JC Coleman, but Edmunds is that classic workhorse style back that Loeffler grew up with as a young coach at Michigan and featured at Rutgers and Auburn.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I have watched Caleb the past couple of springs in hopes of him living up to all the hype he had surrounding him out of high school. I'm not saying he won't eventually be a great player but from what I saw yesterday, he is still at least a year away from contributing. There still seemed to be a lack of effort there however I'm hoping that it was due to the fact that everytime he was on the field, Leal either got sacked quickly or the play was rolling away from him(not an excuse). Hopefully someone will flip the lightswitch on soon because I still believe he is an outstanding athlete who just hasn't adjusted to the college game and the new position.

suckbrickkid

you can tell he is still learning the WR position, Really could not tell too much from the scrimmage for him because the d was all over the qb. He ran routes like a robot out there, but the fluidness will come with time. I don't think he played any wr in high school, so he only has 1 fall of wr under his belt.

I'm pretty OK with it, actually. A little attitude won't hurt that defense.

Super excited about Dadi Nicolas. Hearing all these good things in the offseason combined with what we saw at the tail end of last year, I think he could be really, really good for us.

I hope that he's bought his own bicycle. And one for his friend....

I think that you will see a lot of going between JCC and Edmunds this season. A two headed monster is a GREAT thing to have!

I've only been able to load three plays worth of video so far. Why does our site have to suck so much? But anyways, Edmunds first run (second play) was solid. Just wish they would zoom out a little bit so we could see the play develop.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

When you watch the Edmunds run then the Holmes run, it is very apparent just how much more explosive Edmunds is. That video was more of a showcase of the OL getting blown up then anything else, though.

The offensive plays that stood out to me were the run by Edmunds (14), Homles' (20) first run where he ran through 2 tackles, the long catch by Stanford (5), and E.L. Smiling's (85) two broken tackles after the short completion.

I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE VT's online video streaming!!!!! I am on a T1 connection and it is so effin slow!!!! Also do they have any standards for videos they post up?! I mean, pan the audio center (stereo) don't just leave it on one channel, thats Bush League elementary mistakes. Also they can't ever get the field rendering right. I don't get why they have zero quality control. I am sorry for my rant but it bothers me all the time. Why don't they just post on the youtube account and link there...quality is better and it plays great.

I don't get it either. My guess is they want the page views \ exclusivity at HokieSports.com, although they could just embed video on their own site. Maybe they paid for video software, and feel like they have to use it, even though it is a complete mess.
