Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien confirmed that Virginia Tech "continues to express interest" in a home-and-home series. http://www.pennlive.com/pennstatefootball/index.ssf/2013/04/virginia_tec...
If this were to happen, it probably wouldn't be until at least 2018-2019. Tech is playing Big Ten members Ohio State in 2014-15 and Wisconsin in 2016-2017. David Teel reported this summer that Jim Weaver had contacted Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Arkansas and Auburn in addition to the Nittany Lions for a potential series. http://www.dailypress.com/sports/teel-blog/dp-teel-time-virginia-tech-sc...
Thoughts? I'm very much for this. If nothing else, playing in Pennsylvania as much as possible is great for recruiting.

I'd love this and I'm actually shocked it hasn't happened yet. Jim Weaver is a Penn State alum, and he played for and coached with Joe Paterno.
This has always made a lot of sense and would be great on many fronts. The two schools have a lot of similarities, and Tech has a lot of PA kids that enroll partially because the schools are similar and the tuition is virtually identical (PSU in-state vs. Tech out-of-state).
Outside of DC metro, no one would really care. Unless by some stretch both teams are top 10, it would be split regional and only been seen on the east coast.
Better series would be Michigan so we can a) avenge the catch and b) be involved in a game that could be seen across two regions. Plus Michigan has a much higher chance of being top 10 by that point in time.
Arkansas wouldn't be bad either.
Not true. There are a great deal of Hokies from north of the Mason-Dixon line, myself included. It'll have great appeal, I think.
It'll still be a better draw than PSU-LOLUVA
You're missing the point. Sure there are a lot of PSU and VT alumni east of the Appalachians but it stops there. If we schedule a series with a midwest B1G team we get our normal east coast draw plus the midwest draw of whatever school we play. That means two regions and more TV exposure which I'm sure is a major goal of all of these OOC games we are trying to schedule.
I think we understand your point, we're just disagreeing.
The East coast is the most important TV market in the country. There will be more fans tuning into the VT vs Penn State game then the VT vs Wisconsin game, as PSU has a bigger following then Wisconsin.
Plus, Tech is going to be more interested in Recruiting in PSU's footprint then Wisconsin's.
I'm all for it:
1. I live in State College.
2. You'd be surprised how many other Hokies do too.
3. It's a great football atmosphere with welcoming fans.
4. They are not a AA team.
+1 for FBS
Hopefully we can get Penn State on the books.
No need to schedule a series with Arkansas and Auburn, since those will be conference games by the time 2018 rolls around (fingers crossed). #VT4SEC
This is a series that should have happened while Paterno was still at PSU. That would have drawn plenty of attention with Beamer vs. Paterno
From talking with family that are PSU fans (my cousin who is a PSU alum and her family), they claim Paterno always refused to play Beamer. Something about Paterno not liking Beamer or something Beamer did in the past. None of us have any clue what on Earth it could've been, but apparently Paterno just put coaches on his s*** list for whatever reason, and CFB made it there. And once you're there, Paterno wasn't gonna do you any favors by scheduling an OOC game with you. Weird, I know, and stupid if true, but it would explain why we never saw the iconic Beamer vs. Paterno matchup.
well joe certainly managed to get himself on all sorts of people's shit list
Didn't Beamer win the first Joe Paterno award? Seems odd if he was on Paterno's poo list.
Odd that CFB got the Joe Paterno award in 2010. Was Joe P not in on the decision?
Paterno was probably still pissed that we took Kevin Jones from him. Probably the best trolling job any recruit has ever done.
There are PSU alums everywhere, they have a great alumni base. My sister went there and one of my friends goes there now, aside from all the stuff that happened with Sandusky it's a great place. Went there for a game last year and their fans are extremely nice to everyone. If you haven't been there, Happy Valley is essentially Blacksburg except with a bigger downtown. I'd love to play them in a home-and-home and drive up to Happy Valley for a game.
A few thoughts:
Not to mention State College is pretty much DT on steroids.
Mentioned it on twitter, but I bet they could stuff an extra game into FedEx if they wanted to as well, since both us and PSU have played neutral site games there before.
No. No. Stop going to that fetid hellhole.
This guy gets it.
I didn't say we should, just that it wouldn't really surprise me. Dan Snyder loves his money.
Bring 'em on....play anyone, anytime.
Would be great for recruiting some of those big lineman up there!
