Isn't this an NCAA violation?

Apparently Ohio State's coaches bought the players rings for a 12-0 season (how stupid is that?). Isn't that an NCAA violation? I'm looking for a serious response here, because I don't know. I always thought that when a team won a championship their conference or, in the case of a National Championship, the BCS buys them the rings. In this case the coaches bought them, that seems to me like it's the same as paying players. Thoughts?
