Good read, we all knew we would be at the top, or near this list. I would take Wisconsin potentially upsetting Alabama being bigger. Then again I had never thought about the repercussions down the line affecting Bud Foster and future jobs. He would be on Purdue and Indiana's radar definitely. Most likely Northwestern as well. Would those be attractive enough jobs though? Total rebuilds definitely.
Anybody that's got more football knowledge please, chime in.

Who is Indiana
I thought that they only played basketball.
There's about 30 low level Division I teams you could substitute for Indiana in that statement
I think we should replace "Bud" with "Shane." Because Shane to Indiana actually kinda could make sense.
I thought Bud to Kentucky or Illinois made a lot of sense and neither even sniffed him. Or Pitt the last time (bud interviewed at a Pitt once, maybe when Graham was hired).
Bud blew off his Pitt interview in 2010, and therefore wasn't taken seriously when he did interview in 2011. And with Beamer's future unknown, Bud won't get any serious offers until after Beamer goes, just in case he were Beamer's successor even after leaving for a HC gig elsewhere.
That Wisconsin vs. Alabama prediction though.
Great article, could definitely see a lot of those scenarios playing out.
Bud Foster could have taken the Indiana job...well, whenever he wanted. Since Bud's comments after the bowl game and almost breaking down with regard to his extension and Beamer, I firmly believe he isn't as heavily recruited because people know he won't leave until Beamer is gone. BTW, earth shifted axis when Bud almost shed a tear and God had hiccups for an hour afterward.
Indiana... The Wake Forest of the Big Ten. Yes, I know they also have Northwestern, but Indiana fits Wake. Same level of football apathy, same stadium design, and they both will do whatever they can to pump out basketball for the sake of football. If you ever wanted to know what a dump Lane could become just take a visit to Memorial Stadium sometime.
You're comparing a public university with an undergrad population of 37,000 vs a private university with a population of an undergrad population of 5,000. Indiana has exponentially more undergrad and alumni support.
They may have the same level of football apathy, but its an apples/oranges comparison.
Indiana's struggles with college football are those similar to schools like Kansas and Colorado - a geographical disadvantage to where the best high school football players are located.
The right coach could make Indiana a force in the Big 10 year in - year out.
Wake is so unique in it's position in a power 5 football conference being private/tough academics/low student population.
There was a recent ESPN writer survey that named Wake the worst major college football job
http://insider.espn.go.com/college-football/insider/story/_/id/12367998/...
And yet Indiana could not give a rats ass about college football. The only times they fill that place are when Michigan, Penn St, and Ohio St come to town, because of the opponents fans. Both of those jobs are terrible, and set up for failure.
It's the right guy kind-of job at Indiana. If they broke out and went 10-3 and were beating a Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan type program once a year - that place would fill and they would have great community support.
Similar to our BBall Program.
Wake could be undefeated going into mid-November and I'm not sure a sell-out would be a given.
This past year Indiana averaged 42,000. Wake averaged 27,000
I guess my point is I would take the Indiana job over about 4 other jobs in the ACC.
Indiana enrollment: 46,416 stadium capacity 52,959 (41,657 is 78.7%)
Wake enrollment: 7,519 stadium capacity of 31,500 (27,210 is 86.4%)
Fwiw, loluva dropped 15% last year from 2013, and lolPurdue dropped 28% from 2013!!!!
The Indiana thing reminds me of Maryland. True, they increase 14% last year to 46,981, but that's 87% of capacity of 54,000. So in prior years, it was in the 3/4 capacity range. With an enrollment over 37,000 in a large metropolitan area with a large alumni base. Basketball rules at Murland, like Indiana.
I can buy the murlan comparison.
They do benefit from being the only game in town though. (Indiana also has Purdue down the road) And Marylands recruiting footprint is way more plentiful.
IU could turn their program around similarly to KU under Mangino.
Indiana has a huge problem about 200 miles due north of them in-state....
Tis true!
HTF did Notre Dame become such a national power to begin with? I probably need to research ND beyond watching Rudy again.
NBC
First NC in 1924 under a guy named Rockne. And the next two in 1929 and 1930 under the same guy.
Virginia Tech didn't give a shit about football either before Beamer, win consistently and fans will come.
I hear Bill Dooley had some pretty good teams, recruiting violations aside.
Was just about to make a similar argument. Teams that don't care probably aren't trying to violate their way into taking that next step.
Buds not going anywhere furthermore being a hokie badger now I'm really banking on some serious anarchy! But really the badgers will give bama a decent run for their money if the qb becomes competent
Hokie badger don't care
Growing up a few years in WI... This really hits home
Pretty good chuckle. Liked the alabama loss possibility. But Indiana?? Seriously??? Excluding the fact that Bud's not gonna leave while Beamer is HC, I do recall Bud saying or hinting that if he did leave he wanted to go to a P5 program that wasn't the dregs of their conference. I think he would hold out for a better gig than that if he were serious about leaving. Although the article did have a humoristic (is that a word??) tone to it so I guess we can laugh at it.
Everything at EDSBS is intended to be humorous. That's their schtick. I don't think anything they write there is intended to be taken seriously. That said, I think it's a darn fine site and it's the only one I visit as frequently as I do TKP. I don't think there's any better college football feature out there than their regular Hatin' Ass Spurrier posts during the season.
Ah, the legendary EDSBS snark. Charming
They lost me at this:
If Ohio State wins: 2.2, as they're now retroactively undefeated in 2014 and undefeated in 2015 and, if we're being technical, undefeated in 2016 and beyond.
What a bunch of rubbish.
So you're saying they don't have an $EC bias? And might be tipping the scales to a B1G bias?
Like it or not, this will be the reaction should we lose on Labor Day. Our win last year will be dismissed as a fluke, and an OSU win would be perceived by some as restoring cosmic balance to college football. It fits the narrative that a national champion isn't supposed to lose to a 7-6 also ran.
I do believe that VT has Ohio State figured out, which is why VT will probably win. They have Ohio State figured out, but they also have the personnel to do what no other team will do to Ohio State this year. I don't think VT had the better football team last year though. Its just a nightmare matchup. Sort of like how Stanford is usually the only team in the Pac 12 that can ever figure out Oregon. I think Ohio State matches up well against pretty much every team in the country except for one: VT. The combo of Bud Foster's genius, Fuller/Facyson in secondary, and that nasty D line is the perfect recipe for making the Ohio State offense inept. So if VT does win again this year I do think people will remember last year and pause a second before overreacting. I think voters want to believe in Beamer/Foster, but they are taking a longer than normal wait and see approach.
I'll believe that if I see it.
But I really want to see your theory tested.
I will say this though: If cardale wins the QB job all bets are off. To me he is still a wild card. I could see Bud Foster absolutely having a field day with his inexperience. I could also see cardale completing a few long passes early with his cannon and opening up the lanes for Zeke. My whole take on this situation is predicated on JT winning the job (which I'm 80% certain he will).
The big problem with Cardale is there is zero chance we could send a corner blitz like the end of last game. That dude is not easy to go down
Iunno I think a blindside hit or a corner like Kendall fuller could take him down...of course then you lose fuller in coverage
I like Kendall and all, but I can also see Jones standing in the pocket and delivering the ball to where Kendall isn't in coverage anymore even while Kendall is in the process of taking him down. I mean, think how many times Logan got throws off just by virtue of being able to keep his feet a little longer than your average mortal.
I hope this situation just results in whatever safety is covering for Fuller getting a pick
I agree that Kendall trying to drag him down isn't a very good mental picture.
What I would hope he'd be smart enough to do is not even make contact with the body but instead swat the ball.
Genetics?
I seem to remember Kyle jumping that same gap 3 plays in a row. It was remarkable to watch the O-line make the same coverage mistake, and finally he pulled off that strip.
I'd be great if we could find another Fuller-esque family to drool over.
It is definitely a gamble. If he escapes and gets a full head of steam he is going to truck a couple defensive backs. That being said, I would still blitz the heck out of him. Mentally, he just doesn't have the same level of football intelligence as JT. He is still learning to go through his progressions properly. If you bring the heat though you better get to him because he is the one QB on our roster that can put the ball anywhere on a rope.
I bet they'll still hype us again. The difference will be they won't completely berate and dismiss OSU/B1G this time
Oh stop you're to kind
With the current timeline, speculation, and probability on Beamer's endgame, Foster going anywhere else now would be stupid. Unless he knew he had no shot at the HC gig.
It would be completely irrational to go to Indiana and struggle like that, when you could wait a couple of years or less and take over at VT.
or pull a James Franklin: guy was flat out named head coach in waiting at Maryland. Leaves for Vandy. Spends 3 seasons making a crappy team look good, gets offered his dream job at PSU. Foster doesn't have to move up by leaving, just get some HC experience and he'll have the perfect resume for the VT job. I shudder to think what our team would look like in the meantime, but that's the most likely scenario I can think of where Bud gets the job, short of Frank just handing over the reins.
I fully intend to over-react if VT wins the game. We had day after day of threads about "Fire Fickell!" last year after the loss. Why should this year be any different?
Hopefully, this year it won't be all doom and gloom though. Hopefully some will realize the good a loss to VT can do. Last year it woke the team up and made them realize they weren't shit. They respond by becoming the most improved team in the country over the course of the year. This years team probably has an inflated ego (any championship will do that) and I wouldn't mind them be taken back down to earth. An early loss to VT will once again be a wake up call and obviously the game is early so they can still easily make the playoffs. Better to lose early and get motivated than lose late to MSU and not have enough time to climb back in the polls. In a weird way, VT beating us might actually be what we need if we hope to get back into the playoffs and run the table.
I think their ego will do them in this year. I think they'll be pumped for the VT game, but they'll stumble at some point.
You're right, the loss to VT last year gave them heart.
This guy cannot possibly be serious that Bud would defect to the spawning pond of Mama Giraffe.
