OT: Peyton Manning last legs

Peyton Manning has looked really bad so far this season. He has not thrown a TD pass but has thrown 2 pick sixes. He just doesn't look like the old Manning. Thoughts about him retiring?

Wow, I literally just said this in the Clemson Louisville thread.

Peyton is really struggling man

This will definitely be his last year. That injury from last season and his age has crippled his ability to play like the legend he is. I really wanted to see him win a 2nd super bowl but I think his fate's sealed.

I am the heartbeat of Blacksburg. A fortress built out of stone but made with champions.

It's a shame, but we all saw it coming. The last couple of seasons he's started great in September, and wound up barely being able to throw a 10 yard pass in January. This year, it looks like he started where he left off.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I don't envy the Broncos. If he really struggles a lot how do you bench a future HOF guy? Do they have a ready backup?

The backup, Brock Osweiler would not be an improvement. He'll probably start a year or two after Peyton is gone, but they won't build the offense around him. And then the Broncos will be stuck in the Bills eternal hell where they don't have a franchise QB, but the defense is so good it keeps them from being able to draft one.

The Bills have a franchise QB now...

I love Tyrod, and I think it's great he's starting and getting an opportunity to show what he can do. But he's not what I'd call a "franchise QB." The last Bill that fits that description is Kelly. But I'd love to be proven wrong.

If course he's on his last legs. Look how skinny they are.

My exact thoughts. I think this season is his swan song.

They should move him to TE

Watching the ending of that game (and then checking how my decision to start CJ Anderson and Jeremy Maclin went on top of it):

He made plays and still helped Denver win the game. This thread is nothing but "PLEASE CLICK ON MEEE" hype.

If you've seen any of Hokie Fireman's other posts, you'd realize how gross a mischaracterization that is. He had an opinion, calmly and rationally gave his reasons, and wanted others to weigh in and discuss. That's why these boards exist. This isn't click bait. And based on the eyeball test, Peyton is certainly waning. He's still a competent QB, but he longer looks to be elite. He's serviceable, but he's peaked, and generally that would indicate retirement will soon be upon him.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful by posting this but from what I am seeing, I think this post is premature and a little ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Based on Peyton's post season performance, injuries, age, and how he opened this season: 5 quarters, zero tds, and 2 pick 6s. At what point is it premature to assume that Peyton is on the decline?

Yeah, Peyton Manning is totally out of his prime and incapable of winning a Superbowl. What was I thinking? My bad.

Man you haven't been sitting on that one have you?

Being on a Super Bowl winning team is not the same as actively contributing to that win. Peyton gets another ring, but he was hardly instrumental in earning it. The defense won that game, plain and simple. Peyton's stat line was pedestrian.

Manning did almost nothing. Just glad they didn't give him the MVP

I'd have lost my shit if any offensive player had won MVP. Von Miller owned that game.

Because his SB performance was phenomenal?

Well, luckily, winning the superbowl isn't entirely a 1 game effort. Peyton did the job he needed to managing all the games leading up to the SB. I'd classify his performance in the SB as "not losing", which is fine by me.

Hardly, anyone can see he's not the QB he once was. Doesn't make him bad, but he's definitely gone from one of the greatest to just good in the last few years.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Long gone are the days of 3 passes for 76 yards and a TD. But if he can still hit intermediate which he proved last night he is still dangerous. But he is certainly not the same player he once was.

I tried to refrain from responding but found myself coming back to this most of the day. I don't create threads to gain popularity or turkey legs or friends. If you would notice most of the threads Ive started dont get up votes. I did this to discuss what I was seeing in a QB playing a live game. Who/what am I hyping? Its hilarious how many people (including myself) had the same conundrum. I went with my head over my heart and stuck with Manning and it looks like I made a good call. I hope Tyrod makes me feel stupid though. I love that guy.

I'm in the same boat. I started Manning because he does Manning things. Half way through the season I feel Tyrod is gonna be the one to start though. Peyton is not going to be able to keep getting hit the way he has the first 2 games.

Tyrod stepped up for me this week despite the loss. Netted an additional 6 points over Peyton in my league. Was scared there until the fourth quarter!

I'm a Patriots fan, but I'll be cheering for the Bills this Sunday!

Over the course of the season, I just hope T-Mobile's Hokie attitude(work hard, humble, prepared, grateful for those who helped him) isn't poisoned by Rex Ryan's brash cockiness.

Hokie in West Africa...sadly, I can't jump up and down hard enough for it to be felt in Lane

peyton got me 20 last night but if Tyrod gets over that, I might consider picking him up, even though I don't want to waste my #1 waiver on just him

Wow, 256 yards, 3 TD's (including one to tie the game in the final minute) and an INT... If this is Last Legs I'd say it still could be a good season for the broncos.

I think a lot of the hiccups are due to Peyton trying to work within the Kubiak offense and a completely new offensive line.

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

His throws don't look as crisp, his decisions take longer, granted an average Peyton is better than a lot of the league he is still clearly feeling his age and injuries.

Definitely agree he's fading, but it's a new offense. He still ended up with a pretty good game and as long as they continue to improve they'll be just fine. The question mark for me is the offensive line. If those guys can gel and keep Peyton clean, which they didn't last night (albeit against a great chiefs front 7), the Broncos will be just fine.

his passes were looking wobbly all night and I was worried about it since hes on my fantasy team but that last TD pass to sanders was as good as it gets, so it put some of my worry to rest

Manning is incredibly overrated. Nowhere near the QB that Joe Montana or John Elway was. I equate him with Jim Kelly, except Jim Kelly was less likely to blame his teammates when he choked.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Ehhh, I don't know. I could have the conversation about Montana and Elway edging Manning out in a close race, but "nowhere near" is a stretch for me.

See performance in big games. With one exception (a playoff loss to the Steelers), Manning performed horribly in the "biggest game" of the year in every season since his freshman year .he has been awful, including his lone Super Bowl win. Hand the MVP to Domnic Rhodes.

I cant tell if this is sarcastica or not, but if it isnt, then I don't agree with the "nowhere near' part. Peyton will go down as one of the greatest QB's of all time, stats and field general speaking. if he had any decent to good defenses like past super bowl winners, he would have a lot of SB's than just one imho

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

On the flip side, the guy played with awesome, Hall of Fame-caliber offensive talent and performed horribly in the playoffs. I have heard the argument that Manning didn't have great players around him in Indy. He had Marvin Harrison, who should be in the HOF, and Reggie Wayne, a borderline HOF guy, as his 2 wide receivers most of his Indy tenure. He had a fantastic tight end in Dallas Clark. He had Marshall Faulk for one year then he was replaced by the great Edgerrin James. Plus, he had a very good o-line. The guy had everything a QB needed to succeed. And he did during the regular season. His annual playoff regression was stunning.

The Broncos still have an awesome defense.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

bailed them out at the last minute twice now, I'd say so.

Talk about a good story for this season: the Broncos O and Manning have looked awful when lining up and running Kubiak's style. The game last night turned when Kubiak let Manning do what he does, and start making a lot of line calls out of shotgun.

Manning is still on the steep downside, no doubt. His deep passes have no accuracy because it takes all his arm strength now just to heave them that far.

does anyone think it has to do with the fact that he has to learn a new offense for the 1st time in a long time. maybe his mind is tying up his feet as BUD would say. its hard to be a confident QB when you don't know all the offense and if your WRs aren't running the right routes all the time and on time.

Interesting statistic........Tim Tebow has a higher winning percentage in the playoffs with Denver then Manning does with Denver. Tebow was 1-1 in one year and Manning is 2-3 in three years. Elway has spent a whole lot more on the team with free agent contracts since Tebow was sent out the door. Food for thought.

Manning drinks Budweiser, just saying...

Now that he is retiring he needs all the endorsements he can get. Maybe trying to get Budweiser and Papa Johns together for a pizza with Lager sauce?

Yeah, a friend of mine who brews at Sam Adams posted the same when I made a similar comment on Facebook.

As a note, AB-Inbev is trying to manipulate the three tier system. They are buying up distributors left and right, making it so that the second tier only sells the third tier their beer. In essence, they are trying to make it impossible for craft brewers to get any shelf space.

Bastards...

This is why I never buy any budweiser or miller products (or beers they own, ie goose island, blue moon, etc). It's not even about quality anymore, they are actively trying to destroy beer for their own benefit.

It has been amazing to watch Chicago turn on Goose Island after the AB-Inbev acquisition. Goose Island used to be Chicago's brewery, and basically all the beer snobs in Chicago (and there are many) have jumped ship to Revolution.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Honestly that makes me really happy to hear. They turned their back on the craft beer community and aligned themselves with a group trying to destroy it. I hope it serves as a lesson to other breweries. Sure they got paid a boatload of money, but I have to think that leading one of the top breweries in the country with lifelong fans would have paid just as much if not more in the long run. And for all the talk that their small batch beers wouldn't be affected, BCBS was not very good this year and was served at a truly ridiculous price point (~$14 for a 16oz bottle???).

Almost any beer, almost any pizza, pretty much any time works for this Hokie. He didn't win them the Super Bowl, but he didn't lose it either. Give credit where it is due, y'all, and remember, a lot of folks can't afford craft beers and designer California pizzas, and a lot of folks who can, prefer not to. Count me as one who still occasionally enjoys a crisp cold Bud and I love Papa John's pizza. We like Peyton because he doesn't come across as snobby or entitled, makes fun of himself regularly, and seems to enjoy life and has excelled at his profession. Denver's D made Cam look like a piker last night. Peyton managed the game, took advantage of what a good Panther D gave him when he could, and is enjoying that winning feeling this morning. I say pile off ole peanut head and let him.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Well said brother, well said.

Amen in principle, but I just can't stand most American light lagers (the style of lager, not "light beer"). It's not just the old cliche that American beers are bad, I think it's because they brew with funky adjuncts. Budweiser and Coors are brewed with rice, Miller with corn starch. To me, that just fouls up the taste something terrible. It's not all "cheap" beer, either. I can drink PBR, and am actually pretty fond of Old Style when I'm in the mood for a lawnmower beer.

carolina's gotta feel like crap. At least Peyton left his walker on the sideline so as not to rub it in too bad...

Cam might be immature and a sore loser (let's be honest though, how many truly competitive people aren't sore losers?) but I think his heart is in the right place. He wants to have fun playing the game and I think he's genuinely reaching out to children with their best interests in mind. Sure he comes off as arrogant at times (those MVP cleats.....anyone?) but I think he means well.

Personally, I'm glad that the Broncos won because I think it was Peyton's swan song and his last chance to play in the big game. I'm also glad that he tied his little brother's 2-time SB championships. That being said, I don't really have many negative things to say about Cam. I would like to see him get a SB championship or two of his own. How many people would love to see Cam beat the Patriots? I know I would.

Onward and upward

I think his heart is in the right place. He wants to have fun playing the game and I think he's genuinely reaching out to children with their best interests in mind.

Carolina fans sure think so, and that's what really matters in the end. He's beloved down here.

Can't embedded tweets on my phone, but DeAngelo Williams is for some reason really salty about Peyton's successes. Says that he couldn't play in a western offense and literally said that he was trash last year. Also said that 2010 Jimmy Clausen was better than 2015 Peyton (as a Panthers fan, that is one of the most asinine things I have ever heard.)

And he wonders why the Panthers cut him, can't even show a lick of respect to arguably the best QB of all time.

If you actually read what he said, he gave a lot of respect for Peyton, but he went off on the idiots who are now speaking longingly about how great Peyton would be if he came back and how much he could still help teams only 4 months after openly questioning whether he should even be suiting up anymore. He's not wrong, Peyton was shit this year. They won the Super Bowl because of the defense and the defense alone.

Gotta jump in here even if only to say that I've been a Bronco fan since the M&M connection (Craig Morton to Haven Moses). Saw that team get handled by the Cowboys in the Super Bowl, saw them get crushed by the Redskins, the Giants, the 49ers and most recently the Seahawks. Elway couldn't win early on because he didn't have much of a supporting cast but once Mr Bowlen got him some help, they handled the Packers & Falcons. In the Seahawks game, that fabulous D they ran up against took out a great offense. So, Mr Bowlen's deputy, that same Mr Elway, went out and got the D the Broncs needed and they prevailed against the Panthers. Peyton was never invincible even when piling up all the stats and losing to the eventual best team in the league in the SBs only because he couldn't perform in the post season. Even the best sometimes lose, even in the regular season. We were fortunate that Elway did go get the D we needed and they arguably took out the best this year in the playoffs. It did me fine to see them take out Big Ben, Mr Brady and Mr Newton one by one and add the Lombardi to the trophy case. As for Peyton, age, injuries and Kubiak's offense took its toll. I still don't like that O because it is predicated on being able to run the ball. Either that O sucks or he tried to implement it without having the players that could execute it. Once teams saw that, they made us one dimensional and made it difficult for Peyton all year. Osweiler's performances allowed us to sneak in until Peyton healed. Yes the D won us the trophy but that first drive by Peyton even though it was for only 3, it set the stage. For the first time, the Panthers were behind and looked like a deer in the headlights. Then the D gave Cam the what-for and they were behind 10-0. Game set match. Yeah Peyton's abilities were waning but we don't know what it would have been like if Kubiak's O had the players to execute it and Peyton's foot injury hadn't happened. In quick succession I saw what a less than adequate O line was like seeing #7, #12 and #1 sitting on their butts several times due to the Bronco D. Peyton was the winning QB in each of those games. I witnessed the best offensive performance by a NFL team in history in the 2013 season and Peyton was the QB. The lack of a D got us in 2014 against the Colts and Kubiak's O & injuries almost got us in 2015. As for Peyton's place in QB history and where you personally place him ranking wise is just that. If it's just rings, he's not number one, if it's SB appearances, he's not number one. If it's all the TDs, yardage, wins and all,of the other numbers that he owns, then he's certainly number one. I really don't care about it anyway. All I know is we were blessed to have 2 of the best ever in Elway and Manning & we have arguably some of the best fans - check out the consecutive sell-out record. But I digress - Go Hokies!!!!!!
