Even though Brewer went down in the (pre)season opener and Motley has only played 5 quarters at the helm, a few trends can be identified WRT who they target.
Both QBs target the WR's with around 50% of their throws:
Brewer; 7/16, Motley 16/32
Brewer is more likely to check down to a TE
Brewer: 6/16, Motley 7/32
Motley is more likely to check down to a back
Brewer 3/16, Motley 9/16
Lawson almost exclusively has targeted WRs (5/7)
Ford has received roughly equal treatment from both QBs
Brewer 5, Motley 11
Malleck gets no love from Motley, but Hodges has gotten proportionately double the targets (1 vs 4)
Motley loves throwing to McMilllian (6 targets)
Lawson's top target is Asante (3 of 7 targets)

Great breakdown. I'm wondering if the sample size is sufficient to draw strong conclusions though. Today and next week will go a long way in establishing Motley's trends when he's comfortable with the scheme. So far we've had four quarters if meh and one quarter where the lights came on. His preferences might change once he's out of the learning curve.

That play action fake was so dirty they had to take it out of the replay rotation today, else the live broadcast would have been rated NC-17.
Seriously, that play was filthy. The entire defense bit hard on it leaving Malleck wide open. I hope Loeffler has more of that buried up his sleeve for ACC play, because I can't recall any other PA passes the entire day.

I'm surprised at the lack of Bucky targets. I know Ford was doing a great job of getting open, but I almost forget Hodges is on the field until they throw him a fade inside the 5 yard line. I thought he was going to have a big year, but he has not really been involved in the first 3 game much.
The scouting report is out on Bucky and every team is going to game plan for him. From the early going, it looks like he hasn't developed enough as a receiver to overcome blanket coverage. But his lack of productivity is directly responsible for Malleck and Rogers looking so good in the passing game early. All the focus on Bucky is a good thing for the passing game as a whole, because even though we don't have a third option at WR, we have multiple receiving threats.
A sophomore slump for Bucky is a net positive for VT, because it means we have him for at least another year.
I think Loeffler's game plan with Bucky, as it should be, is to target Bucky on 3rd downs and in the Red Zone. He's delivered with 2 TDs (40% of his receptions). I imagine, by the end of the season, Ford and Phillips will have monster reception and yard numbers. Bucky and Malleck will have high TD/reception ratios.
And Sam Rogers targets Motley 100% of the time (and completes all his passes) and has a 209.2 QB Rating. Why is he not the starting QB?
