Shai McKenzie Redshirting?

I just exchanged tweets with Shai, and he tweeted that he was redshirting, and then promptly deleted the tweet.

There's a mini-discussion going on in a different post, but I thought this warranted its own thread.

Is it possible for him to redshirt? I thought because he had played, he can't get one. Unless it's medical? But he got one last year?

Here's the tweet that was deleted.

He was not awarded a medical hardship waiver. I think he went one game over the threshold. They could definitely apply for a hardship waiver if he doesn't play any further snaps this season, and coming off an ACL tear, he'd very likely be granted one. They've become almost automatic as long as the guidelines are followed.

Yeah he appeared in 5 games last year.

I don't disagree with it too much. McMillain is our best RB by a wide margin. Trey is not useful in the backfield unless he's blocking. I'm pretty much done waiting for Trey to become a serviceable running back. JC, I love, but not very effective today. Shai could play and it wouldn't bother me.

They don't seem to trust Mac between the tackles. All jet sweeps. We have seen enough of Trey and JCC to know what they are. We have seen limited carries from Shai, but he looks like a shell of his former self. At this point, time to double down on Mac and see if what his ceiling is.

Mcmillian has shown the burst. No one else has. I'd like to see a little more option and toss sweep. The other teams are selling out between the tackles.

It seems like the coaches believe Trey is our best goal-line back not named Rogers. I guess because he's the biggest healthy TB we have (besides DJ Reid... but where is he?).

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Good question about Reid. He seemed to be talked about quite a bit this spring.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Reid is a non-factor, much like Caleb. If you read the quotes from spring, Reid has a few things going against him:
1. Not hitting the holes hard enough
2. May have put on too much muscle mass, has been slowed by that
3. Not running like a big bruising back. Wasn't showing enough ability to break tackles during scrimmages.

With the other talent we have, he'll be hard pressed to see the field anytime soon.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

1. Not hitting the holes hard enough

The same could be said about a few of our backs currently

I thought Shai got carries against Furman....

Medical hardship.

So with Edmunds, McMillian, McKenzie, Williams, Reid, McClease, and Fox do we see any attrition or do they remember that 3 of the guys are injury prone so they stay and wait for playing time? I'd hate to see this talent get misused or go to waste over the next few years!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Next year they all get 4 carries a game. Thanks Shane.

The problem s that none of those guys are elite backs. Maybe Mac is, but there s probably a reason they don't trust him between the tackles.

There may be a reason they don't trust him, but why should they trust the other backs at this point? No one has stood out running in between the tackles so I don't understand why he hasn't been given a shot to do just that.

Okay, refresh my memory here. Wasn't his 60 yard TD run between the tackles?

Yea, he looked fine running between the tackles during the scrimmages

Seconded

On the postgame show, they mentioned that Shai was redshirting. I think it was Laaser but not 100% sure, I was drunk.

Beat writers confirming Shai will apply for hardship waiver.
