I agree tht a nuetral site game would be the only possibility because of their violent fans...
I wasn't following hokie football when we last played them, so I don't have a real stake in the game. I'd lean towards not having our players and coaches hit with batteries and play someone with more class...
I think that the majority of current students really don't have that sense of rivalry with WVU anymore at all. This would just be designed for the alums.

Hokies.

I hate WVU with all my heart, but I never want to play them again. They and their d-bag fans can go rot with their unaccredited degrees.

Rip his freaking head off!

Either way, that Black Diamond Trophy is right where it belongs.

Andy, do you think WVU is regretting moving to the B12?

As a current fan, I would love to play wvu instead of ecu, itd have the potential to become our big game every year since uva hasn't been competitive as of late

I meant student not fan haha

And have to deal with the worst fanbase in the nation again? No thanks. The rivalry died, and it should stay that way.

Those asswipes are insufferable even online. Surprised they even know what the internet is.

Never play them again! Their fans are a danger to our team and our fans and the value of playing them is negligible. They may from a better conference than ECU, but at least Greenville is a reasonably pleasant place to visit. Morgantown? no thanks! Neutral site? Not with our history in those games.

maybe it's because my dad's side of the family is from wv, but my aunt went to marshall so i grew up with my grandparents preaching to me how bad wvu is, but they are and shall remain my most hated rival. any team that makes my blood boil like that is so satisfying to beat head to head, and so devastating to lose to. that is rivalry my friends. we played a thriller with them in hoops this year and my heart was racing the whole second half.

when we played them in football it was always the hardest hitting nailbiter of the year (well not every year but many). it seemed like every year one team would be ranked high, and the other team would be mediocre and knock them off. the fans hate each other, the players hate each other, hell even the administrations dont seem to like one another. it is an sec level rivalry.

current students would quickly learn all about how intense it is. i know they have more sociopaths than most fan bases and seem to wear it like a badge of honor, but we have some pretty shitty confrontational fans too. i've seen it with my own eyes, and that includes throwing shit at opposing fans and starting fights. frankly some of you sound like hoos with all the inbred toothless kissing cousins comments every time west virginia comes up.

bring the game back.

Let's not take the cultural high-road on the WVa subject; It sounds too "Cavalier".

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

I do not see it as the "cultural high-road" to not play a team whose fans are among the most abusive in the nation. The cousins offer us nothing as far as national exposure and their level of motivation to beat VT makes them always a high-risk opponent. Better to play a more neutral B1G or SEC opponent than a team that offers so little return on the risk involved.

At the end of the day...it's just a game. If our player and fans are not safe, then we won't go there. That horrible night/couch burning fiasco was the last straw for Beamer and Weaver. Not only did their "fans" throw batteries at our players, but there are accounts of fans/alumni being jumped and threatened by them. I remember one where some idiots (sorry, no better term) tried to beat up a 40 year old guy and his 10 year old daughter! Unacceptable.

Wonder why no other conference wanted them? Not me.

I, for one, would never support us going back to Mtown. At least until their fans appreciate the sport.

We put the K in Kwality

Oh there are much better terms for them than idiots. But, I guess we try to keep some decorum around these parts. I, for one, just let the cousins speak for themselves (see 'Exhibit A')...

Solid comment. I love being a Wv resident but cannot stand wvu. I didn't become a Hokie until after the games ended but id like to see them come back. Its fun getting dirty looks from their fans

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

In today's episode, we take you to the rough 'n rowdy crowd of West Virginia! These fans really love a good brawl! Crikey! Fortunately, Virginia Tech realizes you always hire coaches named after a beer near and very dear to me Aussie heart!

No.

I proudly wore my VT gear to the WV state fair...man did I get some looks in that WVU community center place there. LOL

@AMB4VT

You are either incredibly brave, incredibly stupid or both. Regardless, bravo to you and your enormous cojones.

If I was a man I would not have done it. :)

@AMB4VT

Still, bravo to you and your enormous cojones.

I played a golf tournament in WV a few years ago, and of course had all my VT clubhead covers on my clubs. A random man goes out of his way to walk up to me and says "Got a lotta nerve comin up here with those things" and then walked away. I didn't expect that from what was just an ordinary 4 man best ball golf tournament.

@vtscottyb

Well, I'm sure they didn't expect Shane Graham to make that field goal in '99 either. Call it even?

Nuttin' but class at WVU

This is the first time I've seen this, and oh my. It definitely sums up their feelings about us bouncing to the ACC.

i remember asking an eer buddy of mine why bc and miami didnt get the same venom we did after we all jumped ship. he said something along the lines of it being like "your brother smacking you in the face." i was like, "brothers?!? yall sure got a funny way of expressing those feelings!"

and then they left their beloved big east, smh.

I am from WV originally. These are my people and I speak their language. I grew up as a WVU fan by virtue of most of my family having gone there, but I also knew I was going to Tech since the age of five or so. The reputation of the bad apples at WVU is well deserved. It's not every WVU fan, but it is a very vocal portion. The last game that I attended was our 2005 game where Marcus sent em to the exits early in the 4th quarter. The crowd was rough on the way in. No physical abuse but lots of verbal threats and things that you generally wouldn't say to someone with your children in the room. That was the first time I can recall that armed state troopers were posted to the tops of concession stands in a stadium. And this was a day game.

I do have the advantage of a) being a fairly big guy and b) actually knowing some of these clowns, or more correctly their older siblings from when I attended HS in WV. Best exchange of the day:

WVU student: Tech sucks, eff you guys,

Me: Dude, I used to bang your sister.

WVU student: shut the eff up.

Me: No, seriously, tell Jenny I said hello.

WVU student: *confused*

But that was a long time ago. The advent of beer sales in the stadium is a horrendous idea. Several of my good friends are WVU alums including some who hold box seats, even they don't like what the availability of beer has done to the already rowdy crowds. That will end poorly at some point. I haven't been to a more hostile place as a visiting fan (pretty much the inverse of say Nebraska or Wake Forest) and even as a native I wouldn't go to a WVU game at night in Morgantown now.

I halfway expected the WVU student's initial response to you to be, "Yeah, and so did I."

That's more of a Kentucky thing... mostly...

My uncle is a WVU grad and at one point I did apply to go there (even though I was still a Hokie at heart)they had a program in Forensics I was interested in (which VT does not have sadly). My Uncle made me SWEAR to him that I would NEVER EVER go to Morgantown for any games ever. He said they are not a place for a young woman to be. I couldn't agree more. And I will never go even if we do play them again in the future (Hope not!). And adding the sale of beer in their stadium is just absolutely insane!! I mean really? We may as well give them free couches to burn in the stadium as well. Oh and maybe some batteries or rocks to throw at the other teams. But seriously...my bro in law is a huge WVU and he's awesome. So I try not to hold it again him too much. But MOST of their fans are just horrible. And Its pretty bad when the head coach has to ASK the fans not to wear those West "Effing" Virginia shirts. How tasteless and disrespectful to your team. Smh....

@AMB4VT

Blacksburg, Neutral Site, or pass.

However i did enjoy our 2004 game my freshman year when we had them in Lane and they were top ten ranked. Enjoyed rushing the field and sprinting over to the visitors section down on the field to chant Lets Go Hokies at them. It was a full on sprint by the students from the North Endzone to the opposite endzone in that corner where the visitors section is. Good times

@VTimHokie85

I'd rather play some others out of conference. Maybe in another decade we can play the Neers again, but this decade is not the time. Even if it's a neutral site, does anyone seriously want to voluntarily return to FedEx Field (geographically the most logical)?!

I'm loving the upcoming OOC games, but I think why not play some teams from the Big-12? I'd love to play the Sooners, OSU Cowboys, or even the Longhorns. Or how avenging the Orange Bowl against the Jayhawks? I still can't believe what we did to lose that one, no matter how highly ranked Kansas was.

Being from Texas, I want nothing more than to play t.u. and beat their heads in like in '95. I'd also like to see a rivalry game with A&M, since we're extremely similar.

I have 2 cousins and a cousin-in-law that went to KU. Even though they can't win more than 2 football games a season, they still rag on about that win. We could win 3 national championships in 3 years while they lose 36 straight games, and I'm sure I still won't stop hearing about the Orange Bowl and their stupid Rock Chalk chant. I would love for a home-and-home with KU, just so I can restore football bragging right. Or, perhaps a win in the NCAA bball tournament would be more apt, but let's be serious, that's not happening anytime soon.
