Weekly Weather Report: Pittsburgh

Well well well weekly weather report, we meet again. Seriously, grad school is starting to ramp up a little bit so i apologize for the lack of a report last weekend but yeah mother nature does not appear pleased with us for whatever reason. On the bright side our teams are officially 0-1 when I don't do a weather report so thats gotta mean something right?!

Anywho as I'm sure you've all heard hurricane JOAQUIN (caps for emphasis) is chilling in the Bahamas right now living the life that I assume every college student wishes he/she could be doing right now, and tearing shit up. Seriously for a number of reasons its parked its big ole butt right there for an extra day. As I'm sure you've also heard forecasters have changed their minds A LOT in the last 48 hours or so, as to where the hurricane makes land-fall. This is due to small discrepancies in the models we use.

see how many different kinds there are?!

but in all seriousness all the models have a few little things that separate them from the others and all have their strengths and weaknesses as I'm sure you've heard me reiterate a million times over the Euro is hands down the greatest model ever ever. Once again early on it looked like it was batshit crazy and wrong, and once again it nailed the forecast like...SPOT on. see theres an upper level low out over Bermuda that has essentially been playing a giant game of tug of war with a trough thats about to wreck us over the mid Atlantic. Essentially whichever one was stronger and got more pull on the storm was going to result in the direction the storm traveled. The Euro claimed it was heading out towards Bermuda and north east, everyone else thought it was coming up the Chesapeake Bay or New Jersey with the consensus vs going into the bay and then switching over to jersey until everyone once again realized...holy crap the euro can predict the future.

again the euro is showing everyone whats up

But all of this hurricane whatever its name is heading out east does not completely absolve us of all things bad weather. Oh hell no, as I mentioned earlier there is still a massive front coming across bringing lots of rain with it that was kind of fired up by the hurricane itself and its just kind of perturbing northward. Saturday and Sunday should be quite the doozy, however it wont be quite as bad as initially feared. 2-4" of rain are to be expected and with already saturated ground from last weekend (those photos were pretty epic by the way, got some professors to lose their minds up here) expect some more flooding pretty much everywhere and anywhere, I highly recommend everyone brings a poncho, and parks on pavement if possible its going to be a long and messy weekend! That being said, if you're in either of the Carolinas you're getting it even worse. Honestly you guys could be looking at a foot of rain with an increased surge from waves on the coast due to the hurricane being right off shore. South Carolina in particular, and the North Carolina coast please load up on groceries, water, and toilet paper; you know the essentials.

Thanks Towlie

Now that you've gotten a little more info on the hurricane and what all is going on (of course I'd be more than happy to discuss this thing, ive been on my A-Game all week answering questions from my class) lets move on to the game itself.

how i assume my students envision me

THE GAME

The pitt game...oh the pitt game, the one game we always manage to find a way to lose....the team that started our trend into mediocrity my sophmore year....the team that upset the #13 team in the nation after losing to YOUNGSTOWN STATE. (with the same damn coach who now coaches my grad school)....oh my there are not enough things to describe my hatred of playing these guys. I'm going to go ahead and say it now, I honestly think we're going to lose, even with my shaded glasses, the weather is playing right into their hands. Pitt has always been a run it down your throat kind of team and that team (from what I've gathered thus far in my little statistics project) has a numeric advantage in rain soaked games. The balls are harder to catch, players are going to slip on both ends (which is another BIG NEGATIVE on a super aggressive defense) and the aerial attack is more explosive but less consistent. The running game isn't hit to hard, unless you're talking about the team trying to tackle in which case your players will slip and slide around the field like they're trying to tackle a wide receiver quarterback covered in lube....

did anyone else feel like they were watching this last week?

but back to the game, if we can establish the run and shutdown their run we still have an All-ACC caliber receiver to cover on the wing which is another issue with our All American CB down. I do think our defense is gonna come out guns blazing as they were absolutely embarrassed last week, however I still do see pitt pulling out the win eventually. (PLEASE HOKIES PROVE ME WRONG)

Final Predictions

high - 56
low - 50
wind - 10 mph sustained (15+ mph gusts)
Precip - approximately 2"
Cloud Cover - lots
Humidity - not much thanks to the rain

GO HOKIES!!!

This is a bump disguised as a comment. Enjoy your reports. Sometimes they quickly slide down the tracker, keep them coming. I wonder if Joe could monetize a "bump" (promote) button?

-Joe, that's not really a serious suggestion, just something that popped into my head, but hey, if it works and keeps the good stuff visible...

Charleston is going to get wrecked, calling for 10-14 inches of rain. Up here in Myrtle Beach area we are expecting 8-10 inches. The ground is already soaked. I'll be at the game with my wife so hopefully when we get back the kids and in laws are still dry.

When my mom lived in North Myrtle Beach, she'd have headed out of town, typically to Florence, to stay dry and turn it into a party. She would leave a message on her machine that she was "at the Ho-Jo in Flo." Her friends and family knew where she was. Good luck down there. While we're wary and expecting weather, it looks like we'll escape the worse case scenario here on the Middle Peninsula of the Va Chesapeake Bay. Good luck to all on the coast, and the inland areas affected, and we'll see what Ma Nature has in store for us.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Sadly, being in Carolina, it's going to be a Saturday morning decision on whether to drive up or not. Hoping it doesn't get too bad here or in Blacksburg.

I always quote the Euro model and it always makes me look like a genius. And it's all because of you, keep it up!

Money talks.

if we can establish the run and shutdown their run we still have an All-ACC caliber receiver to cover

This statement is equally true for both teams.

touche' but I'm much more confident in their running game than our "spin the wheel" running back committee

actually i think its more of a....can any one of our defenders actually learn to wrap up a running back and make a tackle at the point of attack...i mean shit ill take motu's fall backwards for 4 yards rather than the 80 yard breaks they had last week

In fairness to our defense, RBs haven't been going wild on us this year...its the running QBs that have been giving us problems

Onward and upward

Lot 18 is closed by the way, so no tailgating there. Any idea where we might end up instead?

I have friends with a pass for lot 17 and a guy offered me a pass to 5.
Not sure which one we'll accept.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I'll be in 17 as usual if we want to set up there.

Eshiben can you comment on the latest weather, it looks like the rain amounts/chances have gone down for game time?

From what it looks like on my phone (I'm currently proctoring an exam solo can't look for to long) I believe the original idea was that the hurricane would kind of keep the rain bands in place causing it to linger and just dump rain but because the hurricane is hooking so far east the rain bands will no longer be held in place, thus allowing it to kind of move out a little quicker (again I'd have to look again) there's a name for this its called like the fukohima effect or something. And I had a hunch that would happen that's why I went with 2ish inches which was below the lower end of the forecast

Humidity - not much thanks to the rain

I'm no meteorologist but doesn't rain mean the humidity is at or around 100% given humidity is the percentage of water vapor in the air?

He's no good to me dead.

water vapor =/= water drops

Onward and upward

Yes and no from a scientific standpoint yes relative humidity is 100% at the LCL, however it's not gonna feel super sticky at the ground level

Should rephrase that though you're right.... Air is saturated fersure good catch

Eshiben:
Appreciate the wok on these posts.
My go to guy during hurricane season is Levy and his Tropical Tidbits website. You ever heard of him? He explains things incredibly well. Link to his site below:

Just finished driving 5.5 hours from Myrtle Beach area to Winston Salem, I can say having driven through three hurricanes and Tropical Depression Gaston when it parked over Richmond and this storm was comparable. The rain started this afternoon and has not let up. It was so hard at times I was driving 25 mph on the interstate. Be safe out there.

It was too dark for pictures to really see anything. But Horry County (where Myrtle Beach is) went to OPCON 1 last night due to flooding. Fire Rescue made multiple rescues, the Little River area got over 11 inches in 24 hours.

We are seeing 12-22 inches of water now in last 2 days. It is crazy down here in SC. If you were in Richmond for Gaston its that bad but a much bigger area and for much longer period of time.
