OT/Meta: Could comment score and the upvote/downvote buttons switch places?

I don't know why, but lately I'm giving a lot of incidental downvotes as I scroll on mobile. I think I've reversed them all, but a few have possibly slipped through. I know I can't be the only person that's happening to.

Flipping positions so up/downvote arrows are on the left and comment score is on the right would solve that for 8/9 of the population. But I have no idea how much effort that would take.

Simple solution: scroll with your other hand!!!!

Is this an issue for anyone else? (I wouldn't think it's a big deal, but what do I know.)

I rarely view TKP on mobile, but those times I do, I would have liked to have had a larger button for uplegs and downlegs. I tend to have to reset a downvote because those arrows get to be really small, they're a little tough to target.

This wouldn't address OP's concern, though.

Voting with hooves, it'll get after ya.

I personally don't have a problem with the current setup, though I don't often use mobile here. Maybe once a day. Larger arrows would be useful. Would it be possible to code a little popup when you vote, something that will say "up/downvote posted" (green/red window to make it more obvious) and then fade away after a second or two? That is probably overkill on a normal computer, but maybe something just for mobile? Not sure how much work that would be or if it would tax the server in any way.

Another idea would be to find a way to replicate the N/n function on mobile. That's probably more work. But I would bet that most accidental voting occurs when people are trying to scroll down a page, while other things are still loading and whatnot, and they just accidentally grab a voting button. Being able to hop down the page would be really helpful, but that would (I guess) either require prompting the keyboard to come on-screen, or have a little control pad in the corner of the browser window with other little buttons that people would have to tap to navigate.

"Exit light..."

Or really if there was just a way to see posts you've downvoted, then it would be easier for me to make sure I've reversed all my incidental downvotes. I just don't wanna be throwing out unwarranted bad mojo.

This is something I would like to see, an option in the comments section to see posts that you have up/down legged. Down legged to be able to find posts that were accidentally down legged and unnoticed and up legged quickly find posts that I enjoyed and want to come back to.

Yes, if there were a Next New Comment link in the header or something, that would make me happier about mobile browsing. I almost exclusively use N/n on the laptop/desktop to browse comments in an article, but since that isn't available on mobile, I usually just wait until I'm at a computer before browsing TKP.

I think the arrows are red and green for up and downvotes, which is enough for me to tell what damage I've done.

It's happened to me before too. However, I like the current format during normal web browsing.

Edit for not properly reading before.

It's never happened to me before.

The buttons, no.

I have been finding that this site has something in it that really bogs down my mobile devices lately. Something runs in the background on here that eats CPU and heats up the processor in ways that doesn't happen on other sites. Even for threads that don't have a single gif.

I seem to have this issue on my phone as well (Samsung Galaxy Note 2). Any post that has >100 comments usually starts to bog down, sometimes to the point where I cannot get any other functionalities to work. I can scroll and read the comments fine, but no voting, replying or posting. I usually just end up closing the page and opening a new one (homepage is the Tracker) once I have read all of the comments on a particular post.

I don't really have a problem with accidentally down-voting since, on many threads, I usually have to hit the arrow twice for it to take effect. First tap will just make the arrow turn green or red, but it will not actually change the comment score and the "(reset)" button will not show up until I tap it a second time. Sometimes, the second tap only makes the arrow go back to being gray, and it takes a third tap for ithe vote to show up.

99% of my TKP browsing is on mobile and I rarely have this issue. Having the ability to reset or change accidental votes has been very convenient though.

if there were anything I could change about viewing on mobile, it would be adding a feature to scroll through new comments (similar to how we have the 'n' and 't' keys for snapping directly to new or top comments)...since I don't have a keyboard on my phone, it's tough to get to new comments spread out in a looong thread. I don't even know if something like that would be possible though.

edit: I didn't see GuitarMan's post before I posted this...but he said the same thing; he just did a better job (typical)

Onward and upward

I've accidentally down voted many times using the mobile site, my primary viewing option. If the buttons were on the left side, problem solved.

Happens for me about once per session, but I adjust and move on. Not worth changing the code over (for me, anyway).

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

This happens fairly regularly when I use my iphone.

However, my biggest gripe (and this probably isn't Joe's fault) is that with longer/more gif heavy threads, it will load partway, then say "an error has occurred on this page" and reload the page. When the page comes back up, if it loads at all, all the comments come up grey. Does this happen with anyone else?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I can second this. And if you touch anything while/after reloading, it happens again.

Appreciate the feedback y'all. There are a bunch of things in this thread that I can look into during the offseason. I already have a bunch of ideas cooking, some incubating, and others that are ready to hatch.

Quick question for Joe - are you able to differential what #/% of hits come from a mobile device vs. a computer? I'm just curious - I never go TKP on my phone unless I'm looking for something specific, but other posters are the opposite.

In 2015: desktop (48.64%), mobile (42.45%) and tablet (8.91%).

What's the percentage of people doing all three at the same time?

I can't begin to tell you how many times I'll have TKP open on my laptop, just to switch to my phone and subconsciously find myself on TKP. Then I'll "refocus" and try to pull up a lecture on my iPad and all of a sudden boom there's TKP again.

My name is VT_Inferno and I have an addiction.

(Is that too soon and in poor taste?)

Tablet only 8 % wow, that how I'm on here 75% of the time, I guess I'm one of the few.

I'm not an expert, but depending on the tablet and the browser it may show up as a "mobile device" instead of a "tablet". Or it may be that you're in the significant minority, either way.
