It truly is impressive how quickly we have fallen off as a football program. I know the idea was to let Beamer get to Bristol but at this point the program really can't afford this kind of tailing off. Not with the program that needs to be making our entire athletic department money.
Absolutely love Frank for what he did to get us to where we were but it's time. He has to go. We have fallen off too much. If we are going to fail like this, I'd rather fail while trying to get better than fail while stalling to let him coach one more year.
It's time. I love you, Frank, but it's time. Please make it official this week. Let us move on.

*eight win program
Taking Regular season, but yes, win the bowl game and its 8
But that would mean a 5 game win streak
with many injuries this season, the coaching staff needs another year to get back on track.
deja vu....
Watching the 58-0 Clemson put on the U, I think to myself some teams got it worse than VT.
I'd feel better about that if the U hadn't beaten VT LAST WEEK.
Seriously. These excuses have to stop at some point. All football teams suffer injuries.
right on Philly
#depth
Look at TCU. They lost like 7 starters from their D this season and are still making it happen
Yep, thats true...but TCU recruits "deep" in the state of TX. Since the recruiting sites can only give out so many stars, a lot of good talent gets underrated.
TCU's backups are the "talented depth" that I've been talking about.
Also TCU's system is probably a complete 360 from what Bud's is.. We have true freshmen being lined up 1v1 with 0 cover. Bud & Torrian place a lot of pressure on his D and DBs..
Um...a complete 360 would just be the exact same thing...
LMAO! Gotcha! Makes me think of the Jason Kidd quote. I still get what you're saying though.
Obviously meant a 720.
Now I'm just getting dizzy
No, they don't, and you know that.
I'm hoping you accidentally left off the /s
NO.
Seriously read this as a 2014 quote then realized they were talking 2015 SMFH!
Y'all are fucking soft for downvoting this man
With all the injuries we have had I seriously hope we take a strong look into the Strength and Conditioning program. From #sources that I know the players aren't always held accountable in their workouts and the work ethic isn't always there in the weight room. From what I've heard as well is that's we be surprised at some of the names listed that are in that category. I think we need a change there as well though.
#sauces
I think at this point its a matter of when, not if, as it pertains to a coaching change this year. The losing trend is not going to reverse itself without wholesale change, and seems more likely every week that its coming.
Can't say I disagree with you but there's absolutely no way Frank leaves before this season is done. It's not in his nature and Whit isn't going to relieve him in the middle of the year. Just not gonna happen.
I agree there's no way he goes before the season is over, but I absolutely think we should announce his retirement asap if that is indeed the move. That way we can celebrate his career this last month and it can ease the constant and inevitable calls for him to hang it up after every game, because we'll know for a fact that its actually happening.
I think the announcement can't be before the UVA game. I am afraid any announcement of retirement might get the team to quit.
All the team is playing for is pride, if they quit that further proves how poorly the recruiting has been handled.
I actually think it would do the opposite. Gives the players an extra rallying point in that they get to play for a legendary coach in his last 4 games. Plus I think it would make for a great environment during the UNC game with everyone knowing that is the last game Beamer will coach in Lane.
Teams that No longer have Head Coach
#3 Utah Utes 24 - 42 USC Trojans (4-3)
Vanderbilt 10 - 19 USC GameCocks
Penn State L 31 - 30 Maryland
So why would VT suffer so bad
Totally agree. I can remember going to Tech games as a child, and even as a teenager, and feeling the electricity from the sellout crowds every single game. Took my friend to her first game today and I was pretty embarrassed that, first, there were no people behind us in the SEZ (nice weather, and a homecoming game versus a ranked opponent) and, secondly, by the fact she made the comment that the crowd in the east stands seemed to be more intrigued by the paper airplanes than the game. That speaks a thousand words about how happy the fans are right now, and how losing these games are affecting everyone. It's not the same to me. It's sad. Bristol is a huge deal for me, and I wanted to see him get there, I really did, but enough is enough. It's time to go, Beamer.... Appreciate what he did to get us where we are today, but we're headed down a dark path, if we're not already there. As much as I wish we could win out, I doubt it's going to happen. I think when we don't make a bowl game, that'll be the end of Beamer.
As an alumni who went to 3 BCS bowls as a student at tech, I feel bad for the seniors at tech. never got to really experience the excitement and pride of having a Top 10 ranked team and always expected to win. That was my favorite part as a student. The fact that I could buy NCAA on Xbox and play with my team because we had the best RB core and dominate D. The fact that Gameday was expected in Blacksburg. It tough to blame these kids if a paper airplane is more exciting than another Home loss.
For the first time ever, I saw an airplane come out of the west stands over in section 14 or so. Of course, it was so well designed it went from the top all the way to the players in one shot.
oh I'm so over these F'n planes. They were falling around us like it was snowing. Even the older Alumni that were around me were picking them up and throwing them once they fell at their feet. During the first half, the south end of the east stands cheered more for an airplane that hit a Duke player than anything else.
Whit, if you read this..please stop giving out free programs...please..
It's the printed paper tickets they are flying
They have resorted to using the programs as well. About three or four landed in my section and a couple more flew over and landed near the cheerleaders.
I was wondering what that cheering was about. It's gotten so bad that I don't even know what we're cheering for when the crowd suddenly gets excited.
And that alone is The Beginning of The End for CFB. In my days as an undergrad, at the end of Dooley, and the beginning for Frank, it was the Plastic Cup Snake that drew more attention than the game itself.
Better than the 80s.Hope Frank can make Bristol.
As a consultant, yes.
I still want this team to be successful for the sake of the players. I think we have a decent chance to beat everyone left on the schedule. And I hope we do. For one, I'd like to see Beamer go out on as high a note as possible. And two, these kids are giving it all they have to win these games. I'd like to see them get rewarded with some ACC wins and a trip to a bowl game. I know a lot of people want the bowl streak to end to get Beamer and Co. out of here. I just choose to see it a different way. I do want Beamer to step down even if we win out. Like I said I just want to see him go out on a high note.
"I think we have a decent chance to beat everyone left on the schedule."
I literally think the exact opposite of this...
I mean we are not a good team, but do you honestly think we are LOLUVA bad? Duke is a good team. Pitt is a good team. OSU is a great team. ECU isn't very good but we have a history of shitting the bed against them. Miami is a toss-up most of the time; today they were god awful. We are highly inconsistent on offense and our defense is below average to flat out bad. I think we have a decent chance to win. Not a great chance. Hopefully we can right the ship over the next couple of years with a new staff. We have a core of good young players and the potential is there.
I agree.
BC: We generally do not play well against BC, so even though they aren't good, there's still a good chance we lose
GT: Thursday night on the road. Plus GT could have some momentum going forward after beating FSU. Given the play of our front 7, particularly the LB's, I don't have a ton of confidence that we slow them down.
UNC: Good, experienced mobile QB. Have played pretty well since their season-opening loss. Defense will likely be in for a long day defending Williams.
UVA: even though we've won 11 straight, we haven't exactly beat the brakes off them recently. 2 of the last 3 wins have come on last minute scores.
I don't think the exact opposite of this but the only team left on our schedule who I think we SHOULD beat is UVa. BC will dominate us physically on both sides of the ball. GT will abuse our now young secondary on opportunistic plays. UNC will likely torch our D in every way possible.
Confidence? Man that's rough!
If we work really hard we have a chance to be OK
Whatever this season's motto was, this should replace it.
Frank Beamer said this about one of his limited players in the mid-1990s, I've been saving it to use it against him ever since.
That's a sad but true statement.
I'll take one of whatever this gentleman is drinking, please.
I just don't see how saying we have a decent chance to win the remainder of our games is so unbelievable. Do I think we can do it? Yes. Do I think we will do it. No. That's even with my orange and maroon glasses on. We have the talent to win every game. We are just far to inconsistent and this team will have to prove that they can play with consistency to win those games. I don't see it happening but there's a chance that it could. We will just have to wait and see.
Sorry, no disrespect intended. But when you said that we have a "decent chance" to win out I assumed that you meant something like 1-chance-in-3 kind of odds, and no matter how optimistic I try to be I just can't see that. I'll be very surprised if we go even 2-2, and that's assuming we beat LOLUVA on general principle. Anyway, have a leg and here's to hoping that you're right and I'm wrong!
I agree that after this season Beamer should step down but I don't agree with many of you that the program is at risk of losing the ability to be a top notch program in the future. VT has great facilities, great fans, and a AD that will do what's right.
I think it is more an issue of how long it may take to rebuild the program after Beamer leaves. Yes the pieces are in place, Beamer has done a hell of a job, but now we're falling so fast it may not just take one coaching change to bring us back to where we were. The coach after our next head coach may be the one who gets us back to consistent national relevance instead of the laughing stock of the acc. I hope Whit can hit it out of the park with our next coach and I have confidence that he will do a good job with the next hire. Can the next coach effectively dig us out of this hole is the big question.
We can afford it
Why do people keep saying we can afford it? Yes the department is in the black, but we can't spend willynilly and keep it there.
How is a 7 win season spending willynilly?
Beamer has to go one way or the other. There was a time we would win these close ones but now each week we find a way to loose. Tonight was full of bad coaching decisions which have been discussed in other threads. Bottom line it is Time for change. It's going to be scary and hard but it has to happen!
Today was difficult for me. I screamed my lungs out in the North End Zone. But we went to over time with Duke. Fucking four times. That should never happen. I don't care how great Cutcliffe is. That should NEVER happen.
EDIT: FUCKING DUKE. DUKE.
I think you should look back at the previous 4 seasons for both programs and come to some realizations
Oh yeah, that's right - Duke changed their head coach. Worked out OK for them, didn't it?
Not arguing against that in the slightest
When consistent coaching mistakes lose you games, its time.
Sorry frank, we need to let you go.
Although I'm sure your replacement will be pretty mediocre.
Unfortunately I bet there is a money problem right meow. Beamer retires we are good, he is fired we have too pay 2 coaches and we don't have that kind of cheddar methinks...
1.) I don't think Beamer has to worry about being "fired". It's gonna be a retirement deal all the way.
2.) Beamer has that post-coaching deal, something like $2 mil a year for 8 years. I think his current contract goes through 2019. So, either way, we're paying him until 2023. The money only comes into question for 2023-2027.
$250,000 a year for 8 years, $2mil total value.
Leg for the research I didn't have time to do.
Still looks like a case where money isn't an issue in regards to the end of the Beamer era. I'm sure it's all covered in the contracts anyway.
I just hope the decision is made quickly at the end of the season. If the potential for a coaching change lingers more recruits could bail.
I'm glad PhillyHokie said it. Every football team faces injuries during a season and the good teams will overcome them and plug another guy in. We keep saying oh well we lost several players to injury or "next man up" - We clearly don't have a next man. Frank has done wonders for this program and college football but he needs to go. Clear house and start over. With multiple NFL caliber players on this team they should not be losing like this. Depth depth depth.
Ohio State lost their starting quarterback last year, and went on to win the National Championship game.
Depth is a factor in winning championships.
This is a somewhat unfair comparison. Ohio State relies on athletes to play the quarterback position because they rely heavily on creating mismatches with their QB as a runner. Neither one of those jokes at OSU have any better NFL shot than any QB on our roster. Unless someone starts running an anOSU (see that?) offense in the NFL, they will either change positions or not play at all at the next level. Their scheme is what makes them a success at the QB position. Brendan Motley would be a pretty good QB for OSU.
All that said, they straight up whooped our ass with a good chunk of their best athletes sitting on suspension. Depth is not only a factor, it is a MAJOR factor. Unless we hire the most baller-ass coach ever, it would be crazy to think we could recruit like that. What we have going for us is a relatively easy road to a 1 or 0 loss season in a lot of years at VT. when the CFP eventually automatically allows all conference winners, we're in business - as it should be for all P5 schools.
All I'm saying is that football is a team sport, and depth matters.
If we win out...crickets!!!
Whether we win out or not, it's time to rejuvenate this program. We need high energy from the top and great recruiting.
I predict we'll end this year 8-5 (DISCLAIMER: after Miami, I predicted 9-4)

Leg for the appropriate use of Orange and Maroon glasses.
Thank you so much Frank. You're a legend. Let's make the UNC game your last, schedule it for 3:30, drink a ton of bourbon and pack Lane. It will be a hell of a party, quality atmosphere and the fans are more likely to care less if we lose since it will be your day to celebrate. It's time , thanks for everything
Duke is the last time to have back to back wins in Lane, since VT in Oct 2013.
Quite sad when you say that to yourself.. We haven't won a back to back home games since Sept 21 and Oct 5th 2013 games.
Leg for research. This is a sad fact...
Prediction .......Unless we win out ....which is virtually impossible at the his point......frank will retire at seasons end......new coach announced Jan 1st ish......
It's time to pull the trigger but not in mid season
If so, Whit needs to announce this NOW. Start the planned retirement celebration steps he has already planned.
