What is the perception then to Frank as Head Coach, especially over the last 4-6 years?
Florida got rid of Muschamp after a 4 year record of 28-22 and now Florida is headed to the SECCG as a top 10 team in the first year of Jim's time at Florida. The recruiting didnt change, the schools in the conference didnt really change.

Honestly if it wasn't for the injuries to Brewer and Fuller we could be going this year
This is fair. It's not worth wondering what if too extensively, but it's hard to believe we wouldn't still be in contention for the Coastal with Fuller and Brewer healthy all season. Particularly with the way Brewer has taken care of the football this season, I believe at least the Pitt and Miami outcomes are likely different which would put us in a situation where, off the top of my head, we would control our destiny.
I don't see ECU winning either, two of those touchdowns came against Strohman
That's part of the point though. Injuries happen every year yet we've been on this injury excuse for how long? Part of maybe why the culture needs to change
Notre Dame
Starting Quarterback - Injured for the season out since 2nd game
2nd String QB - Transfered in August
3rd String QB - Current Starter
AP Rank - 6
BYU
Starting Quarterback - Injured Injured for the season out since 1st game
2nd String QB - Redshirt Freshman Current Starter
AP Rank - 27
We don't recruit at the level of ND, they are a national brand with a century of prestige, which is why NBC and ESPN are constantly on their jock. How is ND like Marijuana? They both get smoked in big bowls.
As for BYU, yes, they are having a solid season. But I bet our guys would be better developed if they were all 25 year old freshman too.
We continue to stay in Virginia and recruit like other Mid-Tier ACC teams (Louisville/UNC (BASKETBALL SCHOOLS))
Notre Dame has 3 (5*) players, all on defense. ND Recruits Top 4* Talent that VT should also be recruiting
Clemson has more 5* players
Texas A&M is a Top 10 recruiter
VT has recruit 59 3* players on the team while ND has 52 4* players
Comparing FSU- Previous National Champion and ACC Foe
Conference championships prior to Bowden
1948 Dixie Conference Don Veller 7–1 4–0
1949 Dixie Conference Don Veller 9–1 4–0
1950 Dixie Conference Don Veller 8–0 2–0
And Conference Championships prior to Beamer
1905 Southern 9-1 5-0
1916 South Atlantic 7-2 4-0
1918 South Atlantic 7-0 4-0
1963 Southern 8-2 5-0
But I bet Clemson sells their heritage.
Hard to Top having MR. Heisman as your head coach. Or the 20 year drought in winning the conference.
Recruiting is selling tomorrow, not yesterday
Notre Dame is a blue-blood pulling in a much higher caliber recruit. BYU has won on some really fluky plays all year. There is no real comparison here.
Except we also lost one of the best players in the country, and have had people like Dadi Nicolas playing injured to the point of not being effective all season. A closer comparison would be to a place like Arizona or TCU, where injuries to key people caused obvious drop-offs.
The other point is that QB depth takes 2-3 years to build unless you are the type of program that pulls in 5-stars. Motley is not the type of quarterback this offense needs, he's just who we had available, if Ford had stuck around we might be in a better spot. Fact is we had a complete rebuild after 2011, and QB is the last position to gain depth because it takes years to develop a quarterback. This year we lost a back-up to attrition and a starter to injury, it happens.
Agree! It's the depth of our bench and its felt like:
Defense has been crazy off this year, but yep, would have been a game changer for sure.
Not sure we'd be ACCCG with how well Pitt and UNC have done, but we'd be in the fight.
I don't think it will say anything about Beamer. All it will say is that coach blank won the ACCCG in his first year.
And he will have to win many more just to be mentioned in the same sentence as Beamer.
"Hooray, the Hokies won the ACC!"
Thank you. Enough said.
First: I think its seriously unfair to expect a coach to win the conference in their first year. I doubt very much if it will happen, though, I'd be more than pumped if it did.
Second: IF a coach manages that feat, I will give mad props to Beamer for building the foundation to enable a coach to do it. There is no way a first year head coach is winning the ACC at a University like VT without Frank laying the framework for him to do so.
Third: Comparing VT to Florida is ridiculous because Florida is a Blue Blood program which recruits extremely well and has plenty of history and tradition. VT is not. Florida may well make it to the SEC CG but I doubt if they win it. Maybe they'll prove me wrong. The SEC East is much easier to win than the SEC West. That might be the only comparison you can make between VT and UF. They're both currently playing in the weaker half of their respective conferences.
I think we have seen enough over the last four years to know that the football team's record is not solely a product of unfortunate injuries. If the new head coach won the conference next year, it would prove what we already know (deep down, whether we like to admit it or not, we know), that Frank Beamer is not the coach he was before 2012, and the last few years have been an underperformance. Of course it would also mean that the team had been built over the last few years to be in such a position, credit to the current staff.
Considering what we've been though in terms of our record, this is the football equivalent of a "first-world-problems" joke. I'd be happy we beat Clemson/FSU and had a chance for a nice bowl game.
I'd be happy if we ever played Clemson/FSU.
So true it hurts....
Oh I thought this was going to be like Cards Against Humanity or Mad Libs:
If coach ______ wins the ACCCG in 2016 ______.
1. Foster/the world explodes
2. Fuente/he listens to a bluesy jam
3. Morris/he smokes a brisket
4. Richt/many people on this site eat their words
5. RichRod/even MORE people on this site eat their words
6. Herman/a rocket is blasted out of Skipper
no doubt...I'd be among them
Alright! Now let's do Cards Against Humanity...
By that rationale, Larry Coker was a better coach at Miami than Butch Davis.
Let's see where we are in year three of the new coach before we cast aspersions at Frank Beamer.
I hope we would temper our expectations if that happens. Weis took over for Willingham and went to back to back BCS bowls. Muschamp took over for Meyer and people forget UF might have played for the National title game in Year 2 if it wasn't for a 6 turnover debacle vs UGA. Brady Hoke took over for Rich Rod at Michigan and won the Sugar Bowl (if you want to call it a win) in his first year.
I don't think we can make any sweeping declarations based on year #1. A lot of times u have a great 2 years and then flame out. Seems like it's almost better to go 8-5 your first year so it looks like you're building something instead of going 11-1 year #1 and then come crashing back to earth.
Sure, first year coaches have had success in recent years at big programs, usually riding on the coattails of the previous coaches recruiting classes though. I would consider us to be a big program since we've had recent success that spanned more than a decade. Plenty of programs have sustained success and then have a dip before another coaching change. I wouldn't expect us to follow the pattern of the OSUs, Floridas and Alabamas of the world.
Auburn - Gene Chizik
Season before arrival: 5-7 under Tommy Tubberville
First Season: 8-5, Won Outback Bowl
Following seasons: 14-0 and a national title, 8-5, 3-9, Fired
Michigan - Brady Hoke
Season before arrival: 7-6 under Rich Rod
First Season: 11-2, Sugar Bowl Victory*
Following seasons: 8-5, 7-6, 5-7, Fired
FSU - Jimbo Fisher
Season before arrival: 7-6 under Bobby Bowden
First Season: 10-4, won atlantic division, won Chick-fil-a bowl
Following seasons: 9-4, 12-2, 14-0 and a national title, 13-1 and a playoff appearance
Ohio State - Urban Meyer
Season before arrival: 6-7 under Luke Fickell
First Season: 12-0, No postseason bowl
Following seasons: 12-2, 14-1 and a national title
Tons of first year coaches are doing well this year so far, but new coaches don't always spark immediate success.
* - it was a catch
I wish I could give this 100 legs for the *
Something I'm really sad about is that coaches like Loeffler and Searels will not get credit for what they've done to the program. Offensively, next year could be very, very good. Not just by our standards, but national standards. We're likely only losing Brewer and Hansen off of this year's group and as Loeffler recently said, things are a lot easier when you've got a bunch of juniors and seniors running around. Guys like Bucky, Travon, Nijman, Teller, and Ford are going to be primed to tear it up next year, regardless of whose system they're in, and the work the offensive staff put in the last few years recruiting and coaching them is going to be a huge part of that. If we see a big step forward on offense next year (not to mention the significant steps we've seen this year), the Herculean effort that Loeffler and co. put into the rebuild will unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective) be put on the new staff.
Bottomline... looking at next year's schedule and the fact that we will likely have a redshirt sophomore leading at QB and losing Kendall and some other playmakers, I don't really anticipate the pieces coming together to make an ACC championship happen without a lot of help from other teams in the division. This year UNC had a pretty easy path and they are taking advantage of it. They also have a senior QB surrounded by an amazing receiving core. Time was right for them. I don't think we'll be back to that stage until 2017 at the earliest.a
Redshirt sophomore QB? Durkin?
I feel like with kendall out this whole year and with the intrigue of the battle at Bristol, he would most likely come back to rebuild his draft stock
He's still projecting as a first-2nd round pick, he's gone
Since the new coach will decide to start Lawson and he will tear it up and we will get to the playoffs he will be hailed as a success. /s
