Given Fuente's track record, if Loeffler is retained in this capacity, that is a strong vote of confidence in his abilities. I won't try to predict whether or not it will happen. Scot seems like he is a good QB coach, but it all depends on Fuente's offensive vision and whether or not Loeffler fits in it.

But this is assuming he'd even want to swallow his pride and take a demotion. Not everybody is Bryan Stinespring. Besides, Fuente and Loeffler clearly have completely different offensive philosophies.

Pretty sure Fuente's OC will serve as QB coach, should he come. Call me whatever you want, but the only offensive coach I wanted to stay was Zohn Burden. However, I'm completely fine with cleaning house on offense.

I heard that the co-OC, which I would assume is the other OC is going to take over HC, at least in the interim. If that is the case, not sure we have an OC coming along with Fuente.

Fuente and Loeffler have some pretty different ideas on how to structure an offense. I don't think it's a great fit from that stand point.
Could Loeffler adopt Fuente's system and be effective? Almost certainly, I think Loeffler is a really smart football guy. But, it wouldn't be an seamless transition. I'd rather Fuente bring in his guys that know his system and how he likes to do things.

Let the new HC, whose area of expertise is on offense, decide his coaching staff for the offense side of the ball. For Pete's sake, it's his job now, let the man get to it.

I find it interesting how short of a memory some VT fans of this coaching methodology.
Remember when we decided to overhaul the offense, yet our OC didn't get to really pick any of his staff? He had Stiney and Shane to work with, then I believe VT picked up Moorehead beforehand, and Lefty only picked Grimes, who then left. If anything, I would say this process had a lot to do with Lefty's downfall.
If the new coach wanted to clear house, I would be fine with it. I feel like that is why we hire them. I'm glad he kept Bud, because I think the defense is already strong, plus Bud can help Fuente with the culture and what not. But if Fuente felt that his DC was better, then I would initially be fine with his decision to let Bud go.
I'm not sure what capacity Shane is at the moment, but it sounds like from the rumors, he isn't staying. I'm sure Fuente has a plan with him, as some have speculated, ST or some other position outside of the offense.
I get that Lefty is a good QB coach, but what's not to say that Fuente won't be pulling the same if not better QB's? He seemed to be pretty good in the past, and now he has a strong team to help convince these kids.
Anyway, I know it sucks, as sometimes we let the feels get into the way (but I really like that guy and he should stay), but that's not how it works.
You have to set up the coach to succeed by allowing him to choose his staff.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agree with everything. It is now Head Coach Justin Fuente show. Since it is his job to lose, he should be setup to succeed. I like Lefty as a QB coach, but it is not my call, nor should it be anyone's but HC Fuente.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's arguable. What is unarguable is that Stinesprings average season is better than Loefflers. In hindsight, we should have kept Stiney as OC and returned him to OL coach, hired Loeffler as QB coach, moved Shane to TE coach and brought in a key recruiter to handle RBs. That would have taken advantage of each of those guys strengths.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I seriously doubt Loeffler would of come here as a qb coach. You have to admit the amount of talent on offense has drastically improved since his arrival.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Why would we continue to pay a coach simply because his dad was the coach here? I don't understand this thinking. If he's not getting the job done, he needs to go.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Hiring a guy just because he's someone else's son does no service to the person whose son he is. If anything it's a disservice to the legacy Frank Beamer is leaving. If Shane Beamer stays it needs to be because he's the best fit for the job. It has to be because that's who Justin Fuente wants to work with. It has to be because it gives the team the best chance at winning. When Frank Beamer was hired he said something along the lines that the primary goal of a football coach is to win games and to do that he needs good people, and they need to be people he can trust. That is the legacy of Frank Beamer. We need to afford Justin Fuente the same opportunity to have good people that he trusts.

I feel confident this is how Fuente will operate (especially after hearing him in the presser). Shane may already have an offer and so the lack of discussion on him means little. We will see.

I believe Durkin is now a TE. Thus completing our quixotic experiment of converting TEs into QBs (Logan Thomas) and QBs into TEs (Bucky Hodges and now Durkin).

Motley played well for a fish out of water. I am still wondering why after Brewer came back, when given the opportunity to sub him in, did Motley not throw. Motley has a hell of an arm and mobility. He had trouble with the blitz at Miami and Pitt, but asserted himself well at Purdue and the NC State game. He was going toe to toe with Deshaun Watson's stats. This would have been a good year to season him for a breakout year next year.

Fuente certainly has earned the trust that he'll make the right choice. But it it were me...
I'd be looking at Lawson as my QB1 going into camp, competing primarily with Jackson for the starting role. The winner of this competition is where I'd primarily invest my energy.
Motley has been a serviceable backup for us, but investing in him has little chance to establish a long term solution at QB, for the simple reason that he is a senior next year.
I would prefer to see Lawson start and have Motley back him up, with the possibility of redshirting Jackson (which I don't like doing, but would make the most sense logistically to get another year of separation between Lawson's and Jackson's eligibility while we still have Motley to provide backup).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
One caveat, whoever becomes the primary, the backup needs to be prepared as well. No more bringing in the backup to run a quarter of the playbook because he isn't ready.

Judging by Fuente's track record he will start a young QB if he has enough potential. Did that with his current QB as a freshman and some fans didn't like it. That move paid off with 10-3 and 9-3 (so far) seasons and a 2014 Conference Championship. Plus that QB is now considered by many as the #1 or 2 QB in the NFL draft.

I said this exact same thing yesterday on some thread and people reacted like I had said we should think about hiring TimeCop as our new HC. I think it's an interesting thing to think about, especially since there's a guy with the last name Lawson projected to be the starter, who was recruited by Loeffler, and whom many have deemed the next Cam Newton. I don't think Loeffler is a good fit at OC, but I would keep him on staff somewhere in an instant if it meant keeping recruits happy.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
When you hire a new HC, you have to let him choose his own staff. Period. It would make zero sense for a new HC with an offensive background to come in and keep Loeffler. Far better to lose a player or two than not give Fuente the control and autonomy to select his staff.
That said, Loeffler seems like a nice guy and I'll be interested to see where he ends up. For his sake, I hope he lands as a QBs coach somewhere. He could also potentially be successful as a Co-OC where the other OC is the one calling plays. Having a feel for game flow and knowing the right play to call in a given situation is just not one of his strengths.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm not saying we should definitely make Fuente keep Loeffler, I'm saying if I were Fuente I would at least consider keeping him on staff somewhere, unless he plans on bringing over a boatload of recruits who are as talented as Lawson. I didn't mean to imply he should feel pressure to keep Loeffler or anything because to your point, that would be a form of micro-managing and a brand new HC should feel free to pick his staff as he sees fit. In an article I read today, (might have been on here or hokiesports, can't remember) Fuente went out and hired seasoned coaches he knew had experience at the collegiate level when he got the Memphis gig. I think he's a reasonable guy who knows leans on the advice of others, which is why I could see Loeffler staying on staff outside of OC. Just something to think about.

especially since there's a guy with the last name Lawson projected to be the starter, who was recruited by Loeffler, and whom many have deemed the next Cam Newton
Holy hyperbole, I severely hope no one has actually called Lawson the next Cam Newton with a straight face. That's even more absurd than the lingering Logan Thomas to Cam Newton comparisons and that's saying something. Sure Lawson has potential but he wasn't even a top 10 quarterback recruit and hasn't shown anything close to Cam Newton so far or you can damn sure bet he would've been under center full time for the Hokies this season.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
what great qb talent has he gotten? Apparently the most hyped up recruit he landed, Lawson, doesn't get along with him well and probably would have transferred if he had stayed. Plus for as great as many of us think he could be it's all just speculation because we have seen none of it.
Ford was ahead of durkin and transferred out and durkin is already behind Lawson. The one thing I will give him credit for is he at least brought in QBs or went after them every year. That's more than we did consistently before him.

Its either he's a legitimate young coach who Loeffler saw promise, or the kid's a bit of a diva that needs some hand holding, Im hoping its the prior and not the latter.
I do think people are crowning him QB1 a little prematurely...recruiting stars mean very little and have zero correlation to future performance. All I know is, he came in and looked like a true freshman but he does have the skill sets to show promise.

Fine by me but don't believe it will happen.
Fuente is a QB guru/coach, Loeffler is almost guaranteed not to be back next year.
Fuente isn't going to be the QB coach. He certainly will be involved, but he is the head coach.
In Fuente we trust.
If Whit likes him, I like him.
If Fuente wants to keep Loeffler as QB coach, I'm good with it. At the appropriate pay, of course.
EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm also OK if he cleans house. His call.
No thanks.
But this is assuming he'd even want to swallow his pride and take a demotion. Not everybody is Bryan Stinespring. Besides, Fuente and Loeffler clearly have completely different offensive philosophies.
Fuente and Loeffler clearly have completely different offensive philosophies
Yup Fuente likes to score points
In Fuente and Whit I trust, but, imo, after this season even with the injuries:
Free at last, free at last, thank god almighty, free at last.
What, you want to go back there?
Pretty sure Fuente's OC will serve as QB coach, should he come. Call me whatever you want, but the only offensive coach I wanted to stay was Zohn Burden. However, I'm completely fine with cleaning house on offense.

Someone said Cornelsen was coming to VT. Was Dickey the one that was going to be interim?
Yes, Dickey is the interim HC.
So if Cornelson comes, he'd be QB coach. And Dickey could still come, he's RB coach.
I think Wiggins moves to RB, his college position and first two jobs, Burden stays at WR.
What makes you think that? Not being smart, just wondering why.
Wishful thinking maybe.
According to coachingsearch.com......
"Virginia Tech: Memphis wide receivers coach Holman Wiggins and tight ends coach / special teams coordinator James Shibest will follow Justin Fuente to Virginia Tech, according to Rivals.com's Memphis site."
Right, but that doesn't exactly answer the question.
Memphis' Rivals guy reports that Fuente is bringing Memphis' WR coach and TE/Special Teams coach with him
MV7 might not be playing next year and probably could use a job
"Uh, yeah, so just...run past all of them. Throw it all the way down the field if you have to."
"Look. I don't know. I never listened to my coaches anyway. I just went out there and did shit."
"That's a good question, kid. Let me call Tyrod and see what he'd tell you."
If we got David Wilson as RB coach after his Olympic run, this could be our team motto.
Considering he admitted to not even really watching film while a starter in the NFL, I'm not sure I'd want him as a coach...
Dear lord, no

Just say....
Rumor is Rich Rod is going to be our new OC.
wait for it...
Beautiful
No.
No.
With all the news that's being broken in the tracker, I keep seeing this post title and it makes me thing Lefty has been retained.
Damn you and your fancy pants thread titles, FootballGrad
I know there isn't very many people who are fond of lefty but we are much better off with what he done.

NO...but i'd like to see Zohn stay in some capacity for his recruiting abilities and 757 connections
My thoughts on QB for next season:
Brewer is gone.
Motley is a Senior.
Lawson is a Sophomore.
Should we try to develop Lawson and use him as our QB1 for 3 seasons, or do we play 1 season with Motley as QB1 and then the next two with Lawson?
I would love to see Lawson be able to be QB1 for 3 seasons as I think it would help develop the offense for his later years.
Well both Motley and Lawson will be on equal footing as far as learning the system.
Lawson, Durkin, and Motely will all be learning a new system, so even Durkin will have a chance to start.
It has to be Lawson or Durkin (Most likely Lawson) who starts and learns the system for the next 3 years.
Motely is and always will be a fish out of water since he played in a WingT offense in high school.
I believe Durkin is now a TE. Thus completing our quixotic experiment of converting TEs into QBs (Logan Thomas) and QBs into TEs (Bucky Hodges and now Durkin).
It's a new staff, maybe they let him compete at QB first.
Motley played well for a fish out of water. I am still wondering why after Brewer came back, when given the opportunity to sub him in, did Motley not throw. Motley has a hell of an arm and mobility. Agreed, cart is way out in front of Lawson's horse. Hopefully some of Brewer's grit wore off on him.
He has brought in Andrew Ford, Lawson, Durkin, and Jackson. All highly touted QBs. Our cuboard is not bare when it comes to QBs.

or something else comparable to that...like HC at LOLUVA
Only way I'm happy with Lefty at QB coach is if he's just holding the spot for Brewer to take in two years.
