Articulating my excitement over the hiring of Justin Fuente

There are lots of posts on the forum about things people are excited about regarding the new head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies. I'm not really sure that this post will offer anything new (and if it's deemed not to contribute to the conversation here, please, Joe or VTGuitarman, kick it to the curb) but my thoughts have been swirling since the announcement that my preferred choice was going to get the nod, and I want to lay out exactly why I'm excited for the future. Really, I'm doing this as much for myself as for the TKP community. I've been a bit of a mess over this whole thing. But anyway, here, in bullet form, is my own thought process on why I think we might be on the cusp of the greatest era of Virginia Tech football in history.

  1. We finally have a coach who will place an equal (or greater) burden of responsibility for winning games on the offense. More than that, and unlike with Scot Loeffler, we have assurances that Fuente's offense works, and that he himself is an effective head coach.
  2. Fuente was capable of fielding one of the most explosive offenses in college football with a roster full of 2- and 3-star recruits. While the defenses of the ACC are (presumably) superior to the defenses of the American conference, the inherent elevation in recruiting between a P5 and a G5 program should, in my mind, indicate that Fuente could be expected to have the same level of success at VT as at Memphis without a dramatic jump in recruiting rankings having to occur first.
  3. However, given the resources and facilities of the Virginia Tech football program, if Fuente is capable of replicating his success at Memphis, the program might stand to witness a dramatic jump in recruiting rankings through a simple bandwagon effect. High profile recruits will flock to an explosive offense at VT just as they did to Clemson.
  4. Foster is being retained. Beyond the simple feel-good aspect of that, the retention of Bud and all his position coaches (save the one who coached one position that was used about 30% of the time) means that the Lunch Pail defense remains intact. The effect of this will be that, while Fuente will install an offense that none of our Coastal opponents have ever seen before, our defense will retain a thorough familiarity of how to game plan for our conference foes. We will know what they're bringing at us, but they won't know what we're bringing at them. Until opposing DCs get up to speed on Fuente's variation of the spread, that puts us at an advantage.
  5. While 2015 was undeniably a down year for the product Bud put on the field, I have always believed Foster's aggressive defense was best suited to playing with a lead. He now has a head coach and an offense that can provide him that lead regularly. I believe we are about to see the defense play with its ears pinned back more than we ever have.
  6. The cupboards are stocked. Our greatest skill position of need was WR, and three of our four verbals at the position have reiterated their commitment. We have an unquestioned feature back, the offensive line showed big improvement and returns the core of the unit (not accounting for potential NFL draft attrition) and assuming Joshua Jackson does live up to his word now that Loeffler is definitely out, Fuente will have two young guns from which to hand pick his QB of the future (and mold from scratch). Meanwhile, on defense, there is more work to do, but DT looks solid, I don't believe the Ekanibal had a "leave early" type of season, and the young defensive backfield showed insane promise. As has been the trend of late, it seems to come down to the linebackers, but I have to admit, Motu showed flashed down the stretch. Get Settle and Sobchak in front of him and that might be the front-four anchor he needs to make the plays he needs to make. The overall point is, this shouldn't be a rebuild. The rebuild (so far as restocking the roster) has happened over the last three years.

In conclusion, we have a young, hungry head coach, whom we know can coach up an offense full of not the sexiest recruits, a Broyles Award winning defensive coordinator, talent at just about every position, and the element of surprise.

Is it Labor Day yet?

I heard Tennessee is volunteering to be the first sacrifice...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

They don't have the Liberty to do that...

They probably pirated that idea from somewhere else

I heard Tennessee is volunteering to be the first sacrifice...

Wait now, didn't she win that game?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

lolz

Like they said, we play Liberty in week 1.

After that game, with regards to Tennessee:

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Me this whole week, and probably this whole offseason.

Who would have thought we would follow up the most anticipated season opener ever with the most anticipated season opener ever?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Our spring game is going to be at capacity next year.

April 23rd is the spring game, by the way, according to my Hokie Club Representative Annual Meeting - which is always held on the day of the spring game.

I think it's a stretch to say our SG will be at capacity this year. I think it will definitely get a lot of interest. It won't be at capacity until we win a National Championship.

So.....that means next year?

yea, it's a stretch, but wouldn't it be cool if CJF had a huge crowd on hand?

Got my dreams going up on a Friday...

Just placed my season ticket deposit. Let's go!

and don't forget a top notch ST coach. All three phases are in great hands!

I like it because we will be playing with the same attacking, risk-reward mindset on both sides of the ball. If nothing else, everyone should now feel like they are on the same team; everybody looking to kick ass and take names and not having half the guys simply trying to avoid making mistakes.

I would add another that is a bit more ephemeral than yours: Fuente is a really good cultural fit. For those of us who have been too involved in the coaching carousel this year, it's easy to analyze a coaches background, stats, offenses, recruiting, etc. But what Whit has to do is meet them and understand their personality and how it would fit in Blacksburg.

Fuente seems to be a great fit. He's confident but not brash at all. He's very humble and deferential to Beamer, but I don't sense any concern that "he's the one following a legend." He's family oriented, a country boy and won't be underwhelmed with what Blacksburg has to sell. He's no nonsense and focused but innovative.

A comparison might be Seth Greenberg, who I liked a lot but always seemed to be a fish out of water. I sensed some frustration on what he was selling to recruits at times. He had run ins with the administration. He was rumored to lack respect and deference to other sports and their coaches. Seth did a great job here but he was never a good fit.

Fuente immediately feels like one of us.

Nicely stated. It's amazing how quickly Justin Fuente has assimilated into the culture of VT. He hasn't had a single misstep thus far, and has said all the right things. He already feels like he's one of us.

I completely agree with point #5! And i dont believe ive read that yet elsewhere. Good post!

And don't forget to throw in there that Cornelsen, our future OC, was a Broyles award finalist nominee this year too. Didn't see myself being about to say that about a VT OC... ummm... maybe ever!

I think this was already discussed and I think he was nominated but not actually a finalist.

Reference here.

In conclusion, we have...the element of surprise.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Insightful posts like this are among my favorites to read on TKP. Well done, Sir.

5. This is a very solid point. If Bud's defense has a lead at their back, I reckon we see more sacks, pressure and forced mistakes.

6. The cupboard is stocked to an extent. Getting Brewer's replacement up to speed will be paramount. It's fortunate all three of Tech's quarterbacks will be here for spring ball (provided there's no attrition and Josh Jackson enrolls). Until the new receivers show they can play, depth there is very worrisome. The loss of Ryan Malleck can't be understated. However, Virginia Tech returns a bunch of scary, seasoned, skill talent. And hopefully the offensive line can continue to get better under Vance Vice. I am plenty worried about the d-line next season, more so at d-end than d-tackle. Who is going to play next to Ekanem? It's probably Trevon Hill if he's healthy, but who's playing behind them... It would be terrific if Settle absolutely dominates spring practice, but I'm holding my breath until I see updated weights.

Granted, this is not a Larry Coker situation, where CJF just has to show up and win. But compare our roster to what Mendenhall is inheriting at UVA. We aren't in dire straights, especially if Fuente closes strong on this recruiting cycle.

Regarding Malleck, huge loss, no question. But does Fuente's spread utilize a traditional TE like Malleck? Even though Malleck was more reliable in certain situations and as a blocker, I think bringing Bucky back suits Fuente's scheme more.

The power in college football is with the Head coaches. The SEC had all the coaches a few years ago with Saban, Miles, Richt, Meyer, Spurrier, even Petrino and a few others. Only Saban and Miles are still there and it is obvious the SEC has fallen off.

I think the ACC has done a great job of being in line to take over. Fuente is a great hire, Richt and Petrino are now in the ACC, Dabo and Fedora look to be getting things rolling, and Jimbo isnt going anywhere. London was weeded out with a decent replacement, State, Syracuse and Pitt arent in bad spots.

I really believe with Fuente and Foster, we are in a great position to be at the top of the ACC pretty soon, and back on the national stage.
