OT: Traveling / Shipping Beer

It being the holliday season, I'll be coming back to the east coast shortly and want to bring some goodies back with me...IF I can get my hands on them, does anyone know how to ship it back to the east coast? I've heard horror stories about just bottling it up and flying with it on the plane and I'd hate for a 30$ bottle of beer that I've worked my ass off getting my hands on go to waste all over my clothes.

Furthermore does anyone know a halfway decent place I could go to order this stuff online and just have them ship it for me?

THANK YOU VETERAN BEER DRINKERS!

I had no problem bringing beer back from Colorado. Crammed a 6 pack and a 750ml in my checked bag, nestled among my clothes. The pressure isn't a problem, the much larger risk is bottles breaking from impacts. Luggage gets tossed around a good bit, and stacked on/under other luggage. So make sure you give good padding around and between bottles. Might not be a bad idea to bring some bubble wrap to put around each bottle individually.

If you don't have room in your checked bag to pack them safely there is always FedEx or one of those craft beer ordering/shipping services.

I just wrap the bottle in my clothes and put it in checked baggage.
Not had a problem in many years doing so.

Be careful the weight of your bag, some airlines charge a lot for an overweight bag. Check their baggage info online and use a bathroom scale to weigh the bag if unsure.

Also, growers work very well for going into checked bag as well. I use stainless steel growlers for this. If they break, something went seriously wrong.

I travel to beer destinations a lot as well my buddy travels to Europe and South America a lot and brings back bottles.

I just got back from Chicago. Flew with 2 growlers full of beer, and empty growler and a couple bottles.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Where are you traveling from?

When I was in California in May, they have locations that will ship the wine, and beer for that matter, that you purchased to your front door. I bought a case of Pliney the Elder and the convenience store at Pebble Beach had a beverage shipping service that took care of everything for me. Most will run you $25-$50 in shipping, but well worth it if you get your hands on some killer beer/wine.

Of course, if you're not in CA, I'm unsure. But do check with the UPS/Fedex. As long as you are shipping to a state that can receive alcohol shipments (i.e. VA, MD, and others) you should be ok.

Um, this is 2015, you can buy beer anywhere even in the "dry" middle east

Of course you can. But I live in the midwest and can't find Devil's Backbone or Starr Hill here. I always load up on a few cases when I come home. Likewise when I go to Denver for work, I usually pick up some Wynkoop and Great Divide, because I likewise can't get those in Illinois. Craft beer is still very much regional.

Taphunter.com is a great resource, and there are many others for finding difficult and craft beers everywhere.

I brought tequila back from Mexico this summer after my honeymoon wrapped up in clothes. It was fine. That's all the info I have to offer though.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I bring plenty of wine/booze back from here in Spain in my checked bag. I bubble wrap just to make sure, but no problems so far.

Depending on where you live, Total Wine might be a solid choice to check out for a wide selection. I know they aren't the local shop, but I've always had luck at the Virginia Beach one when I travel out of Maryland.

Check out Beer Advocate. They had a section to browse shops, which might have a local that will have more than you can imagine. The higher the rating, the better the store!

And bring back some Pliny the Elder!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll give you my secrets on travelling with beer if you bring me back some...

My biggest tip is to watch the weight on your checked bags. Was bringing back a bunch of Ballast Point from San Diego and had to do some creative shuffling of my effects to avoid overweight charges.

Totally read this as "Traveling with a Bear."

Is that similar to a ring bear?

I read it as "Traveling/Sipping Beer.
I pretty much guzzle my beer when traveling.

OK. I pretty much guzzle my beer all the time.

OK, so I'm guzzling it right now. What's your damn point?

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Have stuffed bottles in my socks. All the way from Europe actually.

Also got about six 750ml bottles of Cruzan back from USVI with no issues.

Don't worry about it!

Usually, I do something along these lines. Wrap in plastic bag, either a gallon sized or two depending on size of bottle or a grocery bag to try to contain any spills, and then wrap in socks or undershirts for padding. Place in the dead center of your bag, with stuff underneath and on top of it, so that when the baggage folks toss your bag around, they have less of a chance of breaking.

you can FedEX it as well if you're not checking bags.

Always choose joy.

I've packed in my suitcase with lots of clothes wrapping it. Normally, I don't care about wrinkly clothes on the way home, as they are all dirty anyway.

I have done this with countless beers, in fact, I brought a large growler home from Hess Brewing one year. It had a flip top so I added some tape and then wrapped it in clothes. Had a few other 22s and bombers and did the same thing. adding a bag around for extra protection is nice.

I've brought beers to Germany (yeah, I'm that weird guy, but I was bringing home brew for my fam), and wrapped them as well.

My biggest thing is the weight. I've packed a bunch of beers and had to relocate other items.

Stupid terrorists messed up our carry on liquids, as that would be great bringing cases on the plane.

My dad ships me bottles of homebrew every month or so. Typically 6-12 bottles at a time. Each bottle is bubble wrapped, and then placed in a 1-gallon ziploc bag. Only one bottle has broken so far (he's shipped a lot of beers to me over the past 2 or so years). I'm not sure how much he pays to ship, but it's always UPS. He's also checked beer a few times when flying.

i have wrapped up in clothes and then ziplock bagged them in 2.5 gallon bags.

i typically bring back a lot of beer, so i use a 12 pack wine shipper that i also use to trade beers with.

I managed to transfer a bottle of Virginia Lightning to Cali this past Aug (to introduce the shine to my wife's cousins) no problem in my checked bag (they cleaned it out too).

These meet FAA regulations (sealed in a bag and wrapped with bubble). I had to buy them when I flew from Sacramento because they checked my bag for wine. However, because they take up a ton of space in the suitcase, I just take the risk of wrapping bottles in my clothes.

I have brought beer and liquer back and forth from the US and Russia a number of times amd I have never had a problem. I always put the bottles in zip lock bags and then wrap them in clothes.
