OL or DL?

Excellent gif. I haven't thought of this skit in a long time.

That's a big QB. /s

Hopefully he'll stonewall some pass rushes

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

After watching that tape I'm like

I find it rather hilarious that they highlighting him on Hudl. Yeah, like that gigantic @ss sticking out of the line could belong to anyone else. Dude doesn't exactly hide on the field.

these highlights are hilarious. for such a big dude, he didn't look like he labored around the field too much.

I know it may be lesser competition...but one play he blocks one kid into 2 others. 3 blocks on one play!

Also those middle highlights...were they shot with Google Earth??!!

We put the K in Kwality

Also those middle highlights...were they shot with Gboogle Earth??!!

haha..I had the same thought. I guess he's big enough to see from space. Maybe that was the point of those clips.

Onward and upward

He was driving those poor d-lineman off the ball 10, 15 yards on every play, I've seen plenty of big boys that don't do that so I trust the coaches that watched him think he can play in fuentes system.

I am no French, but he seems to be standing straight up a lot...aka, no leverage. Good to see an OL commit though after all the skill positions we have been bringing in.

VT 12'... Exit light, Enter night.

I agree with you. I also think that once he's on campus, gets established in our weight program, and has a few spring practices under his belt he will be GOOD!

Go Hokies

You ever try to move someone that's 300+ lbs?

:p

15

I use to do it every minute of every day...

I'm a lot thinner now, and my knees sure feel better!

OL hopefully?

According to 247, yes! And a rather large one at that.

Get happy, Hokies!

Outside of NC State - doesn't seem to have major offers. How's he looking talent-wise?

Especially this year but in general we and fans everywhere need to stop worrying about who else offered a kid.

It's actually a much better indictator than stars about how talented a player is. TSL has several articles about this that I read and agree with; I'd rather offer a 3-star that has 20+ offers thana 4-star that has 2.

EDITT: That being said, OL is one of the hardest areas to project, so you take it with a grain of salt.

Yet look at the number of kids VT offers that then blow up with offers.

Well obviously VT has had an eye for talent and when we offer, the sharks start to circle. It's the kids that only have one FBS offer (VT offer) by signing day that have me worried if they're going to be good.

Unless he's been committed to VT since 10th grade and basically told everyone: "don't bother, I'm a Hokie through and through". Then I'm OK if he only has a VT offer.

Exactly what you said. It's the guys, just like this recent LB that decommited from us (though admittedly he's not a high-star guy), that only have us as their only offer that I'm worried about. Not someone whom we offered early and then their offer sheet exploded.

Great point, that's very true.

Granted injury played a part, but 1st round draft pick Paxton Lynch agrees with this statement.

@hokie_rd

I like how you didn't list uva as a major offer

He doesn't play against great competition and plays for a bad team. On top of that, he was a late bloomer and doesn't do much pass protection. It'll take a few years for him to develop, but he could be a heck of a player.

I hear that he can really get after it.

"Jackson MORE than meets the eye"?! How much more of him can there be?

No stars? Fuente will make him a superstar!

6'-8", 320 lbs, There is no doubt he will make a GREAT TE!

Allen Ox

Hey, since Baylor has a 400-lb TE, anything is possible!

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I loved when they gave him a handoff against Texas

I would have loved it more in a short-yardage situation.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

The Texas defenders didn't.

Need to pair him beside Tim Settle, who could run thru that?

Great way to start the day!

I apologize if this has already been discussed and I missed it but is Cantor staying on staff or is he just doing his job until the end of the year?

Holy hell that's a big kid. Who was our last OL who was that tall?

Keep calm, Gobble on

Ninjaman and Osterloh are both 6'8".

that's just not fair, i mean he's like NFL sized, blocking middle school kids.

did he just pancake two guys at once (30s mark)? I think in a few years the Teller House of Pancakes may have to change it's name to the Jackson House of Pancakes.

Leg for the Regan video. In the related links there's a really good, old segment of his. The best thing is that his new stuff is just as good as his old stuff. The Radio City Music Hall special took awhile to get warmed up but by the end I was holding back tears.

"Step 1. Remove pastry from package." I see where they are going with this!

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Regan cracks me up...one of the great comics left who has a completely clean act. It's amazing that someone can be so funny without having to be profane or use innuendo

Onward and upward

It's pretty obvious that his team is rather lacking in talent. So many of those highlights have him pushing two people into the second level while the running back barely eeks out 2 or 3 yards.

Happy to see an OL commit.

If I was his high school coach, I would tell him to try and "bulldoze" directly down the line and see if he can't take out the DE, DT, and Nose all at once. Against some of that competition, I think he would be able to do it.

That's sorta what I was thinking.

He's got so much talent that 247 hasn't even bothered to rate him.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Parker Osterloh was 6'8" 299 lbs as a senior in high school with offers from JMU, UVA, and VT.

Big TJ is 6'8" 320 lbs with offers from UVA, VT, and NC-State.

They are similar prospects, big, gobble people up, pretty slow feet. Probably too slow to play tackle. But who knows. Size can't be taught, speed and physicality can be improved in the gym. It seems the lights came on for Parker this year at Guard, so I'm optimistic that TJ can develop and be a player in 2-3 years. I'm not sure Billy Ray Mitchell / Tyrell Smith / Colt Pettit are big enough at this level...

By the way, Parker was a 3-star....TJ will probably get his stars based on the fact that he has three D1 offers.

One more thing about Billy Ray / Tyrell Smith / Colt Pettit...don't want to sound like I am bashing them. I don't think they are tackles, but maybe the can surprise on the interior of the line. I never thought Gallo was going to be as good as he was this past year...

Smith played at center. Mitchell and Pettit were both working at guard.

And Vance breaks out his joy face.

Seriously what are they feeding kids now? I don't ever recall seeing a 17 year old that large in my life.

Say hello to a 13 yr old Andy Reid

So they have been big for a while, just got to find them

HA! It's the hormones in the chicken, I tellya!
I'm sitting here thinking...all these 6"8" guys...that's the code requirement for door frame clearance, and has been for a long, long time. It seems evolution of humans is going to force an evolution in the building codes sooner than later.

Then why the heck am I still 5'9"? This is unfair.

Probably not enough gluten.

/s

I would think 247 would have an automatic 3 star algorithm (not complex one at that) for any prospect 6'7"+ and over 300 lbs.

It would be good to read French's opinion of his potential.

Everything that has happened since the Fuente announcement and all these "BIG" recruits coming on board has had me fall right into the bounce house pool of balls excitement hype!!!! It just feels like a more believable hype this time right?

BroncsZoo

Didn't realize The Mountain from GOT was playing high school football in Richmond.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

The Mountain you say...

A fun little size comparision between The Mountain vs Conor McGregor (current MMA champion)

FTFY
While the guy would kick the living crap out of me, if we're just looking at size, he's only 5'-9", 145lbs.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

He is not 145lbs....that's what he fights at, but he walks around at about 170lbs....quite the difference....He's about to jump up to lightweight to fight as well.

February..'96...the steak: ribeye, the whiskey:Lagavulin 16, the lady next to me: a bit**.....

I would assume he is the pound-for-pound MMA champ now though.

I, for one, welcome our new 6'8" 320 Future Tight End Overlord!

Wait, is this not how it works?

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

Don't really tall people keep growing until like 20 or 21? How many 7ft+ offensive lineman are in the league?

I say play him at Mike linebacker. I think he could bat down a few passes.

Then where are we gonna play Joey Slye?

He gets off on the snap well and has a good first step. Shows some ability to use his wIngspan and get extension.

He will be a project. He has to develop bend at the waste and more explosion in his hips. The video doesn't show him trying to reach or scoop quick players and that will be the real test. It looks like he has the feet, but can he step laterally and then pop his hips to inundate himself between them ball and the defender? I need to see it.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

In your experience, at some point is there such a thing as being "too tall" as an offensive linemen? I mean, forget the fact that your QB has to throw over you, but in order to get leverage and play low, a tall guy has to get even lower. It seems that at 6' 8", nearly every defensive player stands a good chance at getting lower leverage on him.

Thanks, French!

This just made me think... and I'm professing an ignorance of higher-level football here... but when you grade/critique OL recruits, are you doing it in the mindset of what Stinespring and Loeffler have looked for out of their OL? Or even at the P5 level, with the differences between the offenses that Stiney and Lefty ran vs the offense that Fuente will run, is it still a matter of fundamentals still being fundamentals on the OL?

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Interesting.... Thomas Guerry and Chuck Cantor both just followed 6'6 237lb WDE Joshua Kaindoh from IMG Academy on Twitter.

He is a 5* 2017 prospect. Doesn't show a VT offer yet on 247 but would be nice to offer almost anybody at IMG Academy haha

Hopefully he is bff's with Khalil

After watching certain plays in his film, it reminded me of that scene from The Blind Side... "Michael, where were you taking him?" "To the bus... It was time for him to go home."

I happy we are recruiting size and teaching technique. Kinda tired of 280 pound olineman
