I joined, then got sick on how many garbage bowls there are....
I know, right??!! 42 bowls!
But wait, there's more! 3 more next year!!!
Let me guess...they're in the desirable locations like: New Jersey, Montana and Greenland???
In Soviet Russia, bowl game plays you.
One will be in Charleston SC!! That's a great place for a bowl game. Which means #GOACC won't try and get it as an affiliated bowl.
They're actually all in pretty interesting locations: Austin TX, Charleston SC, and Melbourne Australia
Melbourne, Australia?
On paper, that looks great. In practice, imagine the shitshow that will commence if a team who gets that bid suddenly realizes their starting QB doesn't have a passport. I didn't have a passport in college, and I imagine several student athletes don't, either.
It's one thing when Notre Dame plays BC in Ireland in the regular season. That's set years in advance and the ADs have tons of time to make sure everything is kosher. A bowl bid well within the typical six week window for a passport is another thing.
The MAC and C-USA play a bowl game in the Bahames they got their schools to get every member that might travel for a bowl game to get their passport prior to season starting. Apparently the NCAA pays for it.
...meaning the ACC has no ties to them...
...hm.....I could attend a bowl game if it were in Montana
For Confidence, is highest confidence towards #1 or towards #42?
EDIT: I'm IN! Thanks for setting this up!
42 is for your most confident pick. The confidence is how many points you get for being right.
Thanks
I'm horrible at confidence picks. haha just submitted and I feel pretty decent about a lot of my picks, but I'm always at a loss of where to rank them.
I guess we will see!
ESPN is giving you their predicted odds on each team? Why not just fill out your brackets for you, and rate them based on their odds as well? I hope someone does go exactly with their odds 100% so we see how bad they really are. At least now I can understand why the guys that make predictions for them are so bad. "I think team of the week looks so good because our computers have them winning every game."
done. My second entry is just the ESPN favorites with no change to the default confidence ratings.
To do a better experiment, try ranking them according to how strongly they're favored by the picking community. The default order is just chronological, presumably to minimize the damage if you're late making your pick.
I'm pretty sure those aren't ESPN's predictions, but the percentages of users picking each team. That's the way it works with the weekly College Pick'em game.
Just for kicks, I recently went through the last two seasons of the regular season Pick'em and found that if I had just gone with the majority opinion and ranked them according to the size of the majority for every game, I'd have done a lot better. (3rd place in a very competitive league last year, or about 97th percentile overall) You could definitely do a lot worse than going with this methodology, although it takes a lot of the fun out of the game.
I did one of the bowls in order (no confidence) and one normally.
I like that they included the Celebration Bowl. I think the concept of an HBCU national title game is cool, but the MEAC had to forfeit their auto-bid to the FCS playoffs to make this happen. IDK how I'd feel if my playoff chances got taken away like that.
As I understand it, MEAC has been talking about abstaining from the playoff for a while. They haven't advanced past one game in many years.
Done.
Hastily, I might add, just for the Saturday bowls, because I'll be driving all day back to VA. I'll fix the other picks tonight/Sunday. Let's just say I hope a certain major upset doesn't go down today.
There's no open thread for bowl season.
I propose that we use this thread.
There is one now
Looks like it was created a few minutes after your post.
I must be E.F. Hutton.
Is there a VT/TKP straight pick group?
Really wish I had changed my confidence points. I just usually go by the order they are listed in.
OK, so I just realized this...
I went back and changed exactly six games. ETA: I had originally done the whole thing backwards.
Just figured this out this morning. It's been a busy weekend and just got around to checking my picks. Alcorn St vs NC A&T wrong in your 42nd spot will get after ya.
Next year I vote we have both a confidence and straight pick group.
I'll try to do it. May have to set it up as a separate group as it makes you pick the format when you set up the group.
If not I'll try and start one parallel to the confidence pick one.
Ahhh. The thrill of App saving your pick with a field goal, or Arizona moving you up in the field with a pick. I love watching football, but would never be into these crappy bowls without bowl mania.
Great job Todd Davidson, whoever you may be!
That would be me, I used my dad's old account for ease of use.
edit: To be completely honest I had completely forgotten about this until I saw the thread bumped.
the name of my entry is Chris if you check the leaderboard might have had a really really good one if I hadn't been so anti Clemson hahaha.
Thanks for putting together Mr. Whit. Enjoyed the "competition".
It's always a blast...right up until I lose! :(
I'll set up a NCAA Tournament one. Also think it would be fun to do a masters pool.
