Dude needs to go to UVA, then. If you come to VT, you are expected to bust your butt and earn the right to play. Your stars and recruiting hype doesn't "entitle" you to start, unlike, well, like I said already...

without delving into an argument of pay for play etc, this is essentially a job, and those things are given to them because of the money they help generate for the school. they don't have a lot of recourse if they feel they are being overworked and want to seek out other options (part of NW wanted to unionize i believe)

So is it your opinion that no one is being overworked if they are being compensated for it in some fashion?
Physical reality might disagree with you there. I'm not saying that's the reason or not, I know nothing about this issue until I read this thread right here. But listen to Philadelphia Eagles players for example, there were a lot of complaints of being overworked in Kelly's practices. The decline of play at the end of all 3 of his seasons suggested this may have been true. Should the players have just "sucked it up" because they were being paid a lot of money?

well with the time commitment it essentially is a job
but i agree one can be overworked, my point was most people have a variety of options if they feel overworked (go to union, quit, get a new job, transfer within company, etc). college football players and college athletes in general don't have as many options without recourse.

Yes, the new S&C coach called the players over winter break and told them to start getting ready, they will be worked hard and will be doing a lot more running and cardio type work than before.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Hopefully, this means that the offensive players can no longer count on the 20 second breaks between plays after hustling up to the line then waiting while the QB looks over to the sideline for the play to finally be signaled in, then snapping the ball right before the play clock expires.

One of the articles or comments from a writer here said we can still expect to get to the line and look to the sideline for the play. It may come faster than with Leoffler but expect sometime similar.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yep. Also Several recruits have said they were impressed with the new offseason workouts and the new S&C staff, esp Hilgart. Ford was one of the ones who said they have never worked like this before. Sounds like most are buying in as well.

Being lazy is a stretch when we don't have the information. There could be a lot of different reasons for him leaving. I see this as more of losing heart or passion for the game. He could have been on the fence before the workout changes and it pushed him over.
We don't know all the facts so making statements like that is limited and short sighted.

Or perhaps also the most overrated former OL prospect...
And I don't mean that as slight to the kid (Stacey Searels said good things about him to me personally) but rather the slavish devotion of expectations (like those who had him penciled in for the '15 starting lineup this time a year ago) that many show to recruiting ratings and rankings of HS kids that have never participated in a college practice, let alone a game.

Rankings are more accurate for some positions than others. Offensive line being one of the more difficult ones to forecast, Pridgeon and NIjman being good examples of kids who were unranked coming out of high school that turned into highly touted recruits.

Im in denial too, I bet hes still on the team, I bet hes in class right now and looking forward to the upcoming season and contributing to a solid O-line.

Yea..... still better than 2011 when we only took one, but we will need to take a few next year. Looking at the regional pool though I don't see many Offensive linemen in VA/NC/DC/MA for the 2017 cycle which has me worried on our prospects

I don't think Leota was that great, South Carolina told him to look around and it seemed like we never showed much interest once Vice was back in town. 2016 was a good year but unfortunately we didn't close on any of them of note, 2017 will be key but looking around regionally not seeing a lot. I'm hoping we pick up some more Juo guys

Here are some names I dont recognize:
Trey Skeens - FB
Josh Koshuta - LB
Matt Reinhart - LB
Zack Treser - LB
Matt Christ - OL
Connor Kish - OL
Kevin Kish - OL
Casey Harman - TE
Sean Daniel - WR
Ryan Palmer - WR
????
Anyone know anything about them?

Trey Skeens is a local boy. Played at George Wythe in Wytheville. In the neighborhood of 6'0 around 200 ibs and played RB and backer. Not elite speed but he's no slouch at all. Interesting to see him listed as FB. I kinda thought he'd get a shot on defense.

#Hokies confirm OT Austin Clark is no longer on the football team but will continue attending classes at Virginia Tech.— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) February 2, 2016

So could be health related, let's not jump to calling him names just yet or speculating widely about it. Seems like that's what everyone wants to do is call the kid out.

FTFY...how bout no matter what the issue is we refrain from calling him names...forever.

Was not directed at you at all. There have been a few comments before on the thread and ALOT of comments on Twitter and Facebook about him and what they think is the reason he has left the team.

Replying to a comment can be done to further an idea, not just to reply to the original thought. I took Fireman's response to your original comment as him branching off from the proof you posted that Austin will still be attending classes, and addressing the TKP community at large on a broader point.

I mean I didn't mean to start anything. I don't "blog" much,
so when someone responds to my comment I assumed they
were directly commenting to me. I apologize....I just can't win.

Consider it like an alley oop. An original comment drives further conversation. That's exactly the sort of thing Joe wants happening in the comments section.
Definitely no reason to apologize. You did everything right.

I'm one who commented previously about working for a place on the team. Didn't call the kid names, didn't really do anything but respond to the direction of the thread. Mainly, in my case, I was going for the put down of UVA, making a joke and admittedly, trolling for a few legs, more than ganging up on the kid. Sorta just going with the flow, so to speak. If it needs to be said, I will say that I wish nothing but the best for the young man. With us, without us, for us or against us, life trumps sports every time.

Appear to be legs. And not our kind.
You want to reveal your #sauces?
Rivals texted it earlier
Big thread about it on 247, ranging from left before bowl prep to couldnt handle the workouts. Those workouts might cost us a couple more too.
As in the bowl prep workouts were too much?
Just #sauces, but I believe our new Head Coach has initiated more intense workouts for the team.
Every current player that I have talked to has said the workload and intensity has increased a lot.
Yes, the training staff was made aware that this would be taking place and have adjusted accordingly.
You sound like an... insider!
Dude needs to go to UVA, then. If you come to VT, you are expected to bust your butt and earn the right to play. Your stars and recruiting hype doesn't "entitle" you to start, unlike, well, like I said already...
Just playing devils advocate here, but there is such a thing as overworking players. Can't just go assuming things without knowing the whole story.
Not when your school is being paid for, your getting the nicest clothing, food, among other things.
without delving into an argument of pay for play etc, this is essentially a job, and those things are given to them because of the money they help generate for the school. they don't have a lot of recourse if they feel they are being overworked and want to seek out other options (part of NW wanted to unionize i believe)

You can overwork someone at their job, happens all the time. It seems like many of you are looking at it like a job.

One of the guys from last weekend mentioned he really was impressed with the SC coach, I don't recall a recruit mentioning Gentry in recent memory
I get that but bowl prep would have been under Beamer and Co. so I guess it would depend on when he left.
I don't get it. Did we do something above and beyond usual bowl prep that was different this year?
If so, why wouldn't they stick it out and see how the new staff handles things?
WHY.
Edit: Nevermind, I see above.
Rumblings that he hasn't been with team since bowl game prep/ is definitely not with team right now.
Hate to lose a 6'6" 310-pound lineman that was a four-star recruit. I wonder if it was personal issues?
Don't hate losing a lazy one

Son of a
Wait what
Does he follow Searels? Miami did offer him when he was being recruited.
I can't see the ACC or VT allowing a transfer to an in-division opponent.
I can see it being allowed...but it's a 2 yr wait for an intra-conference transfer.
I don't see that happening.
Plus he used his redshirt this year right?
Either way, he wouldn't be playing until he's a 4th yr Jr.
I don't see that happening.
His Twitter account has been taken down.
Wow. That's a shame.
He's probably our most highly rated OL prospect.
Or perhaps also the most overrated former OL prospect...

This sucks.
Also, thread title should be expanded to something like "Rumors Austin Clark no longer with VT"
Im in denial too, I bet hes still on the team, I bet hes in class right now and looking forward to the upcoming season and contributing to a solid O-line.
Reads Andy Bitters tweet.
'I bet he's just taking a breather. Hell be back. I bet he's coming back. Im sure he'll be back by fall...'
Gobblertown is reporting he is no longer enrolled, have heard rumors that he was planning to stay enrolled though
Da fuck is Gobblertown?

Offensive lineman. We need some.

Yarborough, Ball, McCargo, Dickerson, Leota....2016 was a good year for OL.....

We have plenty of TEs!
*ducks*
We had a few tight end turned offensive linemen that did alright under Stinespring.
Big Wang and Duane Brown come to mind most readily.
So he is no longer listed on the roster on hokiesports. Usually not a positive sign.
Beat me to it! Just saw it and he WAS on there this morning.

him leaving the program. Good grief.

Wonder if this means he is giving up football as a whole? Near impossible not to respect that if it is his decision.
I can't imagine the stress of being a student athlete. I'll never fault any player for wanting to step away, whether temporarily or permanently.
