The Key Play turned six today.

TKP provided its most comprehensive year of Virginia Tech coverage in 2015. The staff published 643 front-page posts / articles (1.76 per day). The community dropped over 390,000 comments, started more than 8,200 forum topics and cast over 580,000 votes. All in all, thekeyplay.com served near 11mm pageviews.
It's an exciting time for Hokie Nation. Between Buzzketball's success on the hardwood, and the energy Justin Fuente is breathing into the football program, TKP's traffic in 2016 has seen a 27.45% increase over the same span in 2015.
Even though TKP is my baby, its success has been largely due to a talented team of contributors and a terrific community. Thank you everyone for your support.
Besides editing TKP's front-page stories, pitching concepts and handling business operations, I keep my finger on the pulse of Tech athletics and handle breaking news. It's really an around-the-clock gig that's required me to ignore both my family and friends. My wife and son have been kept waiting at the door too many times after a breaking news interruption; me repeating "five more minutes" from my loft office while banging out a post. I've abandoned guests in my living room to hammer out 500 words on a surprise commit. I spend more time with my phone than any company when I'm out to dinner. Covering a beat requires a ton of commitment and maintenance.
I realize I'm ruining a birthday celebration with an introspective, so I'll get to the point. I start a new job on April 1st. Even though the time commitment is intense, TKP is not my full-time job. This may surprise some of you. Over the years, quite a few people have inaccurately concluded it was, but it's a terrific compliment. After my family, my new employer is my most important priority. Unlike at my previous job of ten-plus years, I won't work from home and will lose the flexibility that's helped me keep up with the Hokies' beat.
I hope The Key Players Club will eventually be able to fund TKP's first full-time reporter. Someone who is trained and charged to cover Virginia Tech athletics as their number one priority. Until then, TKP will adapt as best as possible. No matter what, it will continue to deliver its unique film and statistics analyses, as well as stories and interviews. The plan remains to provide the best Virginia Tech athletics coverage on the Internet, even if my role is diminished.

Congratulations on the new job, Joe! Best of luck to you.
Thank you and the staff for all that you do for TKP!
Assuming you aren't joking, best of luck to you Joe!
Happy 6th!
TKP's Cake day is on Pi Day.
Mind = Blown
I guess we have a winner in the pi(e) v cake debate
There was a debate? I distinctly remember some ramblings about cake, but I don't know that there was ever a debate.
11 million pageviews. Damn. I thought I did that many by myself.
Especially around the time of searching for a new coach, I must've checked the site a trillion times a day.
Thanks for all you do. Congrats on the new gig! And Happy Birthday TKP!
Thank you for doing such a great job on the Key Play. I access it several times each day.
Congratulations Joe!
Congrats Joe! Best of luck with the new gig and still hope to see you around from time to time.
Count it!

..did...did you do this yourself? For TKP?
That's right... yeah
Obviously some of us haven't been following the rules...Oops, wrong club.
To joe, too much work for too little respect. If you put in half the effort to being husband and father that you do for TKP at 100% then you are a damn good man in my book! Best of luck in your new job!

Joe, you and the TKP staff are the best Hokie fans we as a community could hope to have.

An assist.

This is the pic from the post above.
Good luck with the new job, Joe! Appreciate all that you've done. TKP is, bar none, the best Hokie website on all the internetz
Silly Joe, thinking you'll be able to start a new job and focus the morning after the Hokies with the NIT. If you find that there are minutiae/administrative junk that you need to delegate, hit me up.
Happy birthday to TKP! What a great year it has been, with more and more outstanding content from the staff, great discussion from the community, and a whole lot of not staying on topic that makes this place the best.
Did anyone else read the post and think, stay on topic asshole!
Congrats on the new gig and happy 6th TKP! Try as they might, no one could deny your pussy touchdown.
I feel like shots of bourbon and Emma Watson gifs are the only appropriate way to celebrate.
What if...WHAT IF...this whole "Joe" persona is a cover and Joe IS Emma Watson. Has anyone ever seen her eat pie?
Happy birfday, TKP and Joe/Emma. Jemma. Joemma?
I have never seen Joe and Emma in the same place, at the same time.
I think there may be something to this idea.
Which asshole is in charge of phrasing around here?!?
Better?
So where are the Emma gifs?

Come one now,Emma Stone is still a hotty and needs love too. it's sad I have been waiting to use this one all day in reply
Oh I agree, it was just a natural response when expecting Emma Watson gifs.
Just do what the rest of us do, goof off on the interweb when you are supposed to be working...
Happy birthday TKP and congrats on the new job, Joe.
Kudos for having your priorities straight....even if it means a little less info here. I'm sure whatever we can't verify, we'll have someone just make up. We seem to do well at endless speculation already, so we'll be fine. In all seriousness, congratulations on the new gig!
Haha perfect
Happy Birthday, TKP! We all appreciate all the research and insite ignored by the Richmond Times. Thanks for the behind the sound bites that provides us with a better perspective of Hokie sports. Celebration with cake!
Am recent fan of site, love articles, and wish you the best in your new job. Only wish I'd stumbled into site sooner.
Family & job need to stay top priorities. Hokies/cake and/or pie/TKP publisher come in a close second.
I'll admit that I got really sad when I saw the tweet from the official account... but now that I know what it's in reference to, I'm so happy for you, congratulations, Joe!
And a very Happy Sixth Birthday, The Key Play!
