Fuente Mic'd Up: "Dip That Big, Beautiful Body"

VT Athletics just posted a mic'd up video of Coach Fuente from practice last night. It looks like he's very involved in the offense at this point. I loved seeing him moving as though he was a linebacker in one of the drills. There were fewer metaphors and funny phrases/words like "sonic" or "take it to the shade," but he did tell one of our d-linemen to "dip that big, beautiful body." I hope he was talking to Tim Settle, but it was likely a DE.

Two thoughts:
1. Tempo! Man it feels from the cut that Fuente pushes the pace.
2. Sam Rogers at the end of the practice is staring laser beams at Coach. I don't know if Rogers is that focused, or if he is actually shooting down a Russian spy satellite with his eyes. Intense!

I've seen that look that Sam had before:

That gif, my god that gif is incredible.

Sam is part of the new "Star Wars" / SDI initiative by the Air Force.

Favorite part was at the 1:00 mark:

Also, 2:57

Evans is jacked. He could be a kicker his arms are so big.

FLAT! FLAT!

Is anyone else excited by how hands on Fuente is during practice?

Very excited. He is going to earn that salary.

Yep. I love it.

That is what has stood out to me the most. Beamer was up in the tower or off to the side...he really let his coaches do the coaching, but it is awesome to see the HC so involved.

I think the difference is this is Fuentes offense. his baby. hes going to make sure it rolls right. beams for as great as he was he never really had a baby. defense was always buds baby and offense was always like an step child. it would spend a lot of time with the step dad (whatever OC at the time) while the real dad would check in once a week and every other weekend. (and I cannot tell you how spot on that every other weekend comment is either lol)

Excuse me? Pride and Joy? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Um, beamerball?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I can cut glass with my nipples right now. Does that count?

Completly random observation. I couldn't help but notice Fuente's hat is '47 Brand and not Nike. Probably would have never noticed, but I have the same hat. I always assumed that coaches wore the teams supplier's apparel. Maybe it's ok for practice and gameday he will switch to Nike?

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

Apparently the offense needed encouragement to play with emotion, and the defense needed no such encouragement. This was a problem last year, as I recall.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I think it has been a problem for a long time.

Fuente's voice in practice reminds me of Jeff Bridges, without the white russian.

My thoughts - the offense looks lost rushing to the next play but I'm sure this is to be expected on the 3rd day of practice installing a new scheme. But I'm liking the intensity and the tempo thus far. I can't wait to see what this offense looks like coming into the Spring Game.

Also, it might be to early to notice but I have a feeling Motley and Evans are already separating themselves from the pack and earning extra reps.

He's no good to me dead.

Not too far off.

He's no good to me dead.

Thats EXACTLY who he sounds like ha .

"Your X is not lined up...okayyy?"

This was brought to my attention, but now I can't help but hear how much he sounds like Mr. Mackey from 'South Park'. Take a listen to it again, mmkayyy?

Very nice to see that Motley is getting a real shot at the #1.

Agreed. I still get the sense that it will be Evans by a comfortable margin, but glad to see Motley is right in there.

Same here, I think it will be Evans by the end of practice, but it might not be official till fall practice.

To be honest, we're looking at a 3 minute clip. Very little of Lawson, but that doesn't mean a thing. Hell, from the looks of it, Click was making as much of a push as any of them.

At 1:35, is he talking to Mook Reynolds? I always assumed "Mook" rhymed with "juke", but he says it like it rhymes with "look". Interesting.

pretty sure TKP has a resident expert on all things Reynolds family...

Looks to me like he was talking to Bucky and I heard "Look".

I think he was calling Bucky, "Buck" which could easily sound like "look".

He's no good to me dead.

It sounds to me like he was saying "Buck"

Great video, loved how involved he is. The QBs really do seem to all be getting a fair shot. Also seems like we are relying heavily on Sam Rogers to be a leader for this team (not that he wasn't already)

Could this be a theme for 2016?

Are we rushing or dragging?

Maybe but I'm pretty sure coaches flinging chairs at players' heads is frowned upon by the NCAA.

that's what I call coaching. Fuente is a different guy on the field than the quiet coach in the press. Exciting!

His statement at the end is the most telling. The O has to have the same intensity, the same emotion, the same confidence, as the D.

We also can't forget that Frank was a defensive back at VT. He had a defense first mindset, and to my way of thinking, never really embraced more than a conservative offensive approach. It served us well for a long time, but definitely seemed to hurt us at the end. While we had periods of good offensive production, I believe that conservatism was a big cause of our stagnation, as the world of offensive football seemed to pass us by, leading to recruiting misses and an inability to back up our defensive prowess in some hotly contested games when just a tad more offense would have made the difference in the outcome. I'm excited to see Fuente's scheme in action, and hope I can be patient enough to give him time to structure the team for his vision to be implemented.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

you should read Frank's book. He was a QB in HS and played in a high powered offense that threw the ball all over the yard. He was actually very much in favor of that type of offense early in his career as a coach. I think the defensive minded tag that got hung around his neck was more of a result of him hiring really well on the defensive side of the ball and not so well on the offensive side of the ball. Frank is very much a hands-off kind of coach who lets his coordinators do their job. He just never really hired great Offensive Coordinators. Bud might have more to do with people considering Frank defensive minded than Frank does.
