OT: George Mason's new Law School Title

So as an honor (and after much funds raised) to the late Supreme Court Justice, George Mason has renamed its Law School. They just may want to always spell it out as the acronym is unfortunate. The Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University or ASSoL at GMU. DOH!

Not an April Fools Joke

Lotta respect for George mason and this only builds it. Good for them. If I ever get a PhD I'm heading there

I agree, great decision for one of our local universities, money or not.

"Justice Scalia's name evokes the very strengths of our school: civil liberties, law and economics, and constitutional law," said Law School Dean Henry N. Butler. "His career embodies our law school's motto of learn, challenge, lead. As a professor and jurist, he challenged those around him to be rigorous, intellectually honest, and consistent in their arguments."

Meh, not impressed with the decision. Money Talks

Pour some Beer on it

It is common for universities (VT included) to rename buildings or colleges in honor of large donors or supporters. I would be less impressed if it was named after a rich guy or politician elected official. In this case the majority of the donation was from an anonymous person requesting the college be named after someone other than himself.

I am also glad (for the sake of the community guidelines and honoring the man's memory) that it wasn't UVA that did this, or the OPs joke might be getting more play at Mr. Scalia's expense.

Just a reminder. From the community guidelines:

  • Don't discuss politics or religion.
  • Don't post hateful comments related to race, gender, sexual orientation, or religious beliefs.

yes. This. My first thought when reading this thread was that it could easily devolve into a heated political debate...I think it's teetering very close to the edge of politics. Too close for comfort IMO

Yep all this makes me do is subconsciously take mental notes on the political leanings of TKP members. No thanks

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

To me, all I imagine are all the TKPers laughing at all the "ASS-Law" and ASSoL jokes. Doesn't make a difference who the AS is.

Third Grade Humor FTW

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This is the kind of thing that gets a chuckle on Twitter (from a certain group of people), but ultimately does not generate useful discussion here on TKP. It intrinsically involves politics and personal ideologies. No offense to the OP, but I hope Joe deletes it so I don't have to spend my day wondering at what point people start openly sniping at each other. Think before you post.

"Exit light..."

I agree. This is clearly a political discussion.

I disagree. Now lets argue about it.

Using /s is for cowards.

The only thing with more blind team loyalty than sports is politics.

I tried to refrain from sowing any politics into the post. If it wasn't an in-state school I would not have posted. No matter his political stance, Justice Scalia obtained the higher office of his profession and deserves to be honored. I just thought it was a very unfortunate acronym and I am sure GMU will structure the title adequately to avoid this arrangement of letters.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Your first and third sentences are at odds with each other.

Yes, but I was trying to bridge the gap between people who will get defensive and those who will just appreciate the humor. I find it most funny as a jab to lawyers.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Absolutely. I was just thinking about all the people who arrived at the pinnacle of their profession who do NOT deserve to be honored.

the numbers don’t lie and they spell disaster

is it bad that I have no idea who these people are?

Here here!

I couldn't care less about the political discussion, but "The ASSoL at GMU" gets my vote.

What's the news? I find the acronym pretty appropriate in this case.

...and this is where I knew we'd end up.

As unfortunate/humorous of an acronym as this is, associating "asshole" with a public figure who has a strong and well-known ideology, you're eventually just going to end up right here, with people either agreeing ("yeah, Scalia was an asshole!") or defending him ("he doesn't deserve that association").

This thread needs to die before it goes any further.

"Exit light..."

Lol it was only a matter of time. Someone had to do it. Where would we be without pot stirrers?

Someone had to do it.

No.

After much ridicule, these ASSOLs decided to become ASLS instead.

Best part of the article? Scalia's "I just farted" face. Breyer is not amused.

I thought they would come up with something else. In this social media age, word travels fast.

I agree with removing this thread - as someone who doesn't agree with the late Justice's view, I don't want this site to become another UWS shit-show. Please remove accordingly.

Well, you just made the post more political with that comment. It's one thing to say this post is political in nature and against community guidelines, but another to say I don't agree with the political views of the subject, so please remove.

Yes. It was certainly that comment that made this a political discussion.

/s

That is not what I said at all. There is a fundamental difference between admonishing all political conversation because it is against the guidelines and saying I disagree with the political views of the individual whom the post concerns, so take it down. Thats just fanning the flames.

I see what you mean.

For me, though, this whole discussion is political.

I agree. The comment, to me, just on the surface invited more political commentary. By saying I disagree with something politically, you in effect invite responses. I didn't downvote, just wanted to point that out before it turned even more argumentative.

I guess my point is that I could've agreed with OP and continued to laugh / lambast at the scenario with others, but I wanted to show that even though I don't agree with the late Justices' policies I don't want to make fun of him and the school either. So not sure how you extrapolated what you did there - basically I was saying I don't want to kick a man when he's down and bring the site to that level either.

So if I respond to a question about my religion on a political phone survey as believing in VT Football, does that mean I can't post here?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Hooism is a religion. VT Football is life.

VT football is the one religion I think you're safe discussing here.

This a good thread to talk about the election? Personally, I'm torn between this Hilary Trump woman and the Bernie Cruz guy.

Normally I'd say go for the one with the great hair, but those two choices leave us in pretty bad shape...
